Are we Transfer U? PFF grades three Michigan transfers from last year’s portal class amongst tops in the country

Submitted by NeverPunt on December 15th, 2023 at 3:23 PM

While I wouldn’t say we have killed the NIL transition when it comes to recruiting, we seem to have at least gotten our ducks in a row to reward performers ON the team.

Where we may be able to keep up though is our use of the portal we grad transfers who are looking to show out for the draft or get the development they lacked at their original school. Michigan has three of the highest graded transfers from last year according to PFF in Josiah Stewart, AJ Barner and Josh Wallace. (Click link to see full graphic). This has to sell well on the portal front.

Strength and conditioning and player development are where we shine, and if we are bringing in high impact experienced guys and elevating them, I’ll take that over a five star freshman at most positions.

Granted, I’d take the highly ranked freshman too… but for now this seems like a sustainable answer to building a strong program in the current era than can compete with anybody

Olu really was so excellent - Nugent has been good but Olu kinda sorta deserved the Heisman. I'm actually surprised he wasn't on anyone's Rushmore, even if just for a year.

Tackle play is interesting since Barnhart is the same guy. Hinton will get there but he's younger. I thought Henderson generally was pretty good.

Yeah I mean, we don’t always agree.  However, we had to adjust our game plan drastically to account for our OL letting guys thru in multiple games this year.  Sure, you could say the opposition had great talent on the DE, but I think we’d all agree that OL production this year was a let down from what we all hoped for.

We're undefeated and ranked #1 in the country - first time in this century! - and you're going on about how "frustrated" you are that the OL didn't reach your own personal standard of excellence, and then rant about "pearl clutching" because I suggested that maybe you should look at the bright side of things.

Who is being sensitive?

Good find, OP. I'd have to imagine that would be a great advertisement for the football program. Too bad Henderson and Hausmann weren't on top of the OL and LB lists.

Playing on good teams tends to make good players better.

I’m sure Barner, Stewart and Nugent have never had more fun playing football.

Michigan has so much to offer.

The sustainability of being a "school that develops talent" may not be as easy as it sounds.

Firstly, it depends on the coaches. Staffs can turnover quickly, particularly via poaching from other schools who offer promotions and more money. You have to always have the best and brightest coaches all the time and being able to replace them.

Secondly, NIL is a trump card in this day and age. Yes, you can develop, but the money may become such a strong a factor in the years to come that a players interest in the nebulous realm of "player development" is overshadowed by dollar signs which are more concrete and tangible.

Thirdly, Michigan Admissions transfer requirements (for non-grad students) is still a problem that doesn't seem to be changing anytime soon. Maybe freshmen can meet the standards of being able to graduate on time even without any credits transferring, but sophomore and juniors not so much.

Harbaugh is the system at this point and has proven he can replace talent with talent on the coaching side. If Harbaugh leaves, it obviously changes everything, but as long as he's at the helm U-M will be a program that develops players and puts them in the NFL.

NIL will never compare to an NFL contract. It just won't. The economics don't work. Smart kids with a realistic chance of making the league will see the value in getting developed and being made to have an NFL future.

The admissions thing is an issue, but it has worked itself out well enough the past couple of years.

We'll take transfers as long as they either 1) can take 60 credit hours here or 2) have graduated.  As long as we do our homework about who’s out there, it’s not that big of a limitation.  It hasn’t been a problem for football at all. It’s been an issue for basketball because for two years in a row we stupidly went after guys who didn’t fall into those two categories.

I'm perfectly fine with this strategy, and I think we should be marketing widely that U-M is the place to come if you want a redo to "do it right" and get developed.

Interesting that Josh Wallace came in ahead of Davison Igbinosun, a player it seemed that Michigan may have wanted more.  I just tried to look up Igbinosun's PFF grade, but I couldn't find it.

What makes Michigan attractive?  Culture, development, and winning.

Two of those things are not that sexy to a HS recruit.  They're often more focused on NIL, promises of playing time (many of which are empty), and flashy visits.

After dating the hot blonde (glamourous recruiting process) and realizing she's absolutely insane and might kill you, many players are noticing the thoughtful brunette who has her shit together and will help you do the same.

What Michigan offers is much more appealing to players who have seen what college football is really like and are looking for a place that can help them develop, puts team above the idea of "stars", and still wins as big as anyone.  I don't know if that helps as much with "diva" positions like WR but it has clearly helped in the trenches and adding players like Barner and Wallace that know they have more to give and will transfer without the promises of dollars and prestige being peddled by many programs.

Basically, it's easier for Michigan and players to find the right fit in the portal than in the recruiting process.

It seems like there are some high potential players who may not be maximizing their potential - and, realize that Michigan could be a good place to reach their potential.

It seems like things are working out.  Michigan isn’t “paying for play” with true freshman - and, is directing NIL to contributors - and, thus far - it seems like those involved with NIL are engaging in team efforts and doing so responsibly.

So, the collectives aren’t dropping their funds on high school prospects- and, the portal is filling gaps in the roster.

Several players have been developed and are key to Michigan’s success.  Those players include - Hutch, Haskins, Blake, and JJ.

It’s the culture.  And, it would great to hear what recent players - like Olu - think of the culture - in comparison to other schools.

I think Harbaugh has the NIL thing fairly well-tuned at this point.  We are not looking for players who are looking for a big bag of money in terms of NIL dollars.  We are looking for smart young men that are looking for the incredible player development opportunity that is provided by Michigan's NFL caliber coaching staff. We have a high-value sales proposition when it comes to recruiting in the portal, and when you balance that with the awesome job that Harbaugh and staff has been doing in identifying under-valued talent at the high school level, who has it better?

For some reason the tweet image cuts off Josh Wallace.

AJ Barner was a beast this year.  His numbers have to be near or better than Loveland's.  He made a lot of key plays.

Stewart and Wallace were both solid this year.
