Are we going to break the draft by school record?

Submitted by team126 on

Likely drafted:

  • Jake Butt
  • Jehu Chesson
  • Ryan Glasgow
  • Ben Braden
  • Ben Gedeon
  • Jeremy Clarke

50/50:

  • Channing Stripling
  • Deveon Smith
  • Kyle Kalis
  • Kenny Allen
  • Erik Magnuson

It is a good bet that Michigan will have 14+ guys drafted this year. Of course, they should all go in the 1st round!

It's a lot more likely that Strib gets drafted that Jeremy Clark and Ben Braden. He didn't test well at the combine, but he was one of the best corners in America last year and he's really long, which is coveted in the NFL. 1% chance Stribling doesn't get drafted.

I'd honestly put Braden, Gedeon, and Clark (there is no e) in the 50/50 catagory. I think they'll get drafted, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were priority FAs. Smith showed well, so I'd add him to that category. Stribling did everything well, but was awful on the bench press so maybe that killed his chances of being drafted.

Anyway, outside of Butt, Chesson and Glasgow...we're now to the point where a team loves you or they think you're a FA. Any of those guys could go in the 4th round and any of them could go undrafted. How did they do in the interviews? Who scouted them? Who's got the need?

Hopefully Harbaugh's name and connections mean a lot and teams well take all of them today knowing they were well coached.

I disagree on Gedeon, I think that he is more likely to be drafted than everyone left, save Butt and Glasgow. Not only was he very good last year, but he showed very well at the combine. I think he goes in the 4th or 5th round.

Overall, I think we finish at 13 and get taunted by Buckeyes for a while.

And we'll agree to disagree. He did show well, but that was a given...his nickname is The Freak and he's built for the combine.

Last year he showed great in run support, he got torched in coverage more than a few times.

Which means, IMO, he's got to go to the right team. Which means, IMO, he could slide. But like I said, he could go at the top of the 4th and I wouldn't be surprised either.

My point is this late in the draft, there are plenty of guys who fan bases think will get drafted in the mid-rounds and don't end up drafted at ALL. I don't think that will be the case here, but it happens.

Now if you think Gedeon is in the Butt/Glasgow/Chesson category, I disagree. Smith did well in all of the pre-draft stuff as well. If you put Gedeon in there, then I think you have to put De'Veon in there who was more productive in college, has a coach who's obsessed with him, did so well in one bowl practice he got invited to another. And didn't test himself out of the draft.

Like I said...I would not be shocked to see every single one of those players listen in the OP get drafted. They're all going to get a legit shot to play in the NFL. No question. Hopefully we hear a lot of names today. As I mentioned, with Harbaugh's connection...it could be one of those things where we hear a lot of them late because teams know the coaching these guys received.

Yeah I agree with 90% of what you're saying. I'm a homer but I think that Gedeon is a valuable second or third (depending on 4-3 or 3-4 base) ILB on NFL teams for a while. It would do him well to land on a 3-4 team with two starting linebackers but a need for depth - then he could rotate in to keep them fresh while he adjusts to the NFL. I agree with your point that a lot of mid round guys that fan bases are familiar with fall because NFL GMs are not as familiar.

Where I disagree is Chesson. There are more WRs in the draft than there are quality ILBs, and Chesson has fallen sharply as a prospect over the last year. If he entered the drafted after his junior year he's probably a second round pick. However, after his injury in the Citrus Bowl he really stagnated. He caught a lot of balls with his body this year and his production really diminished. Then at the combine he didn't even beat Darboh in the 40! Darboh ran a really good time, but for most of Chesson's career we were made to believe that he was a top 3 speed guy on the team, running very close to the 4.3s. I think his combine time was 4.48. All of this being said, I still think Chesson is a WR that somebody will draft, I just think that Gedeon is probably in the top 10 ILBs left on the board and Chesson is probably only in the top 20s for remaining receivers.

I feel kinda bad for Braden.  He was bounced out to LT just as he was getting into form after that minor injury at the start of the season.  If he had stayed at LG, I think he would have been a lock as a draft choice.  Instead, he took one for the team and finished his senior year getting poor reviews at LT - a position he had never played in college.

They'll break the school record, but I don't see 14 coming through. Though at the same time, I didn't expect Delano Hill and Darboh to be gone in the third round.

It's great for all these guys to achieve such a big life long dream. As a Michigan fan it's bittersweet to see them leave with so much left behind. It shows how much work we have to do and just how bad Hoke and company were. They could find the kids but it took Harbaugh to get them drafted. I look forward to many more years of classes leaving but leaving with championships and all the game that goes with it.

In the seven-round format, from what I can find, it is indeed the Ohio State Buckeyes with 14 in 2014, followed by Miami with 11 in that 2002 class. Going back to the older iterations of the NFL Draft though, there are a few teams that nearly hit 20, from the looks of things, which would be utterly ridiculous in the current format at it would represent about 1 in every 11 or so players selected.

He will definitely get his shot. Just a matter of if he gets drafted or signed as a free agent. If he goes undrafted, then I would expect someone to snag him up pretty quickly.

The problem with last year vs this year is that the OSU guys all went super early. Even if we have the same number it doesn't have the same effect and they'll try to diminish the accomplishment

We won't beat the Ohio State record, but it shows we are on a par with them.

Little by little we are eroding the huge advantage they have had over us the last decade.

History shows when we are roughly even with them, so is our record against them.  Then it comes down to a few plays here and there . . . mostly just luck at that point.

Jim Harbaugh is doing what he came to Michigan to do, and why we paid him all those millions to do it.

Don't see that happening in any foreseeable timeframe with any other coach we had a shot at.

Michigan had 19 players listed on the NFL Draft Board, and 11 were drafted. I don’t believe that any school had as many listed; most teams had fewer than ten. LINK

Among last season's other top 25 teams (and two of Michigan's rivals that were far from top 25): Alabama had 11 (10 drafted; only Bowling Green transfer Gehrig Dieter wasn’t); Auburn had 8 (4 drafted); Clemson had 9 (6 drafted); Colorado had 9 (4 drafted); Florida had 9 (8 drafted); Florida State had 9 (4 drafted); Georgia had 3 (1 drafted); Iowa had 7 (4 drafted); Louisville had 10 (2 drafted); LSU had 11 (8 drafted); Miami had 12 (8 drafted); Michigan State had 3 (2 drafted); Notre Dame had 6 (2 drafted); Ohio State had 8 (7 drafted; the eighth was punter Cameron Johnston); Oklahoma had 6 (4 drafted); Oklahoma State had 7 (2 drafted); Oregon had 2 (neither drafted); Penn State had 4 (1 drafted); San Diego State had 5 (3 drafted); Stanford had 5 (2 drafted); Tennessee had 7 (6 drafted); UCLA had 7 (5 drafted); USC had 10 (5 drafted); Utah had 11 (8 drafted); Virginia Tech had 8 (4 drafted); Washington had 8 (5 drafted); West Virginia had 7 (2 drafted);  Western Michigan had 4 (3 drafted); Wisconsin had 6 (3 drafted)

Next year’s NFL Draft might be a very lean one for Michigan when Maurice Hurst, Mason Cole, Mike McCray, Khalid Hill, Henry Poggi, Patrick Kugler (if he becomes a starter in his fifth season) and John O’Korn (if based on his play in his first starting season at Houston) could be the only Michigan players on the Board.
