Another Fictional U-M Grad: Melissa McCarthy in Ghostbusters

Submitted by BursleyHall82 on

There's a new member of the Fictional U-M Grad Club, joining President Marshall in "Air Force One," Ari Gold in "Entourage" and everybody in "The Big Chill."

In the new all-female "Ghostbusters" movie, Melissa McCarthy's character, Abby Yates, is a Michigan grad. (Forgive the Freep link.)

Go Blue, Melissa.

It isn't just her. Kristen Wiig's characters also went to Michigan. I don't want to spoil anything, as early and minor as the plot point is, but after a certain event, she is carrying a box of stuff, and if you pay close attention, one of the items in the box is one of her degrees, which is from Michigan.

Their characters were best friends growing up, so I suppose it makes sense that they went to college together. I only noticed the degree during the movie and did not catch that the other character went to Michigan too.

Anyone seen eposode 3 of American Odyssey?  Sergeant Odelle Ballard is captured by a terrorist/freedom fighter group.  The HFMIC attended UM.  Serious subject, but fun 'go blue' exchange.  I wonder if the writer is from OSU....

It's as if TV and movie makers are emulating this blog, with all those fictional Michigan grads!

They say you can tell how bad a movie will flop based on how heavily it is marketed in the LA area ..

This movie is being pushed very, very hard and would seem to fall into the flop category.  Other rather recent examples would be ..

Arthur -  (remake, of course )starring that dude with the high cheekbones who is not funny

Meet the Fockers (Meet the Parents-3)

The Lone Ranger - I actually had dinner with the head of Disney studios after he'd spent the day cutting trailers for it and he said it sucked ...well before the release.

.... I am guessing this rendition of Ghostbusters will be on HBO very soon.

+1 to the "Hollywood is dead to me" post.  It is dead

My rule of thumb when I lived in NYC (and will be again when I move there in a month) is if a movie is ridiculously advertised everywhere in Manhattan and the Subway, it probably stinks. When I was in intern in NYC in 2003, posters and advertisements for Gigli were everywhere. The movie sunk like a rock.

Hollywood is out of ideas, period. In the past 3-4 years I've gone to the cinemas maybe 2-3 times per year, max (the last movie I saw was the latest X-Men movie and I don't remember what happened because it wasn't memorable). I never thought that would happen, but this is what happens when mainstream production is crap and movie ticket prices are inflated.

Yep.

The studios dump a bunch of money into the hype, cobranding (McDonald's toys, ToysRUs, videogames) and general marketing in the hopes enough fools will pay at the boxoffice and they can at least get the money back.  Most movies (retreads) like this new Ghostbusters will make some money off the cast and the core moviegoer, but will move quickly into heavy rotation on HBO.  The revenue coming afterwards from NetFlix and secondary market will ultimately justify this piece of worthless film being made.

Also wonder if Melissa McCarthy is in a situation like Eddie Murphy was for a while where he was contractually obligated to make a bunch of those disasters in the 90's...?

This one's borderline, but still ...

In the 1942 John Wayne film "Flying Tigers," the new hotshot pilot Woody Jason is meeting everyone from the squadron. The men introduce themselves by their home state, and when one guy says, "Michigan," Woody replies, "What a football team."

Don't know if the guy was a Michigan grad, but I like to think so.
