Trey would be my first choice.
I typed that as I am sitting on my couch wearing my Trey jersey.

The Babe would still hit the fuck out of the ball, he was an all time hitter, there are and have been many chubby guys who hit well lately.

Ruth was a record setting pitcher, hit as many home runs as most entire teams, and hit home runs in some parks that have dimensions that are bigger than today. His called shot was estimated at 500 feet and he wasn't on steroids. Baseball has more nerd analysts than any other sport and Ruth is gereally regarded as the greatest player ever.

Great. Now imagine what Babe could have done with modern training techniques, modern coaching and a decent nutritional program. Imagine what the 50's and 60's Yankees could have done if they didn't go out and get hammered every night. You can only compare players and teams relative to their own eras.

I think you're taking his post a bit too seriously.
February 24th, 2016 at 9:14 PM ^
Obviously! I think you have a valid point about the 'younger vote. Anyone who saw Gary Grant play would be less inclined to give Trey the nod. Cassie, Rudy, and Ricky Green are all great choices too, but how many of us have seen them play?

Trey's gotta be in there. He single-handedly brought us to the national....
February 24th, 2016 at 8:25 PM ^
I would take Rumeal Robinson because, you know, he actually won.
February 24th, 2016 at 8:21 PM ^
Leaving Webber off the list would be ludicrous. He was amazing and is either 1 or 2 along with Cazzie.
Rickey ahead of Trey I agree, although Trey's pro career obviously isn't done yet. Rickey and Jalen - to me they are about the same level (which is outragesouly good).

edit: oops wrong thread.

Those three for sure. Rudy T is in my four. And Burke is the best point guard we've had, although I loved watching Rose.
February 25th, 2016 at 9:13 AM ^
Can't believe people here don't put Rudy T on the same level as Cazzie and Rice. Rudy T still holds all of the UofM rebounding records. Two-time All American. 2nd pick in the NBA draft.
Bill Buntin & Phil Hubbard deserve the same recognition.
Here are the 5 jerseys UofM has retired:
- 22 Buntin
- 33 Russell
- 35 Hubbard
- 41 Rice
- 45 Tomjanovich

We'd really be singing Rudy's praises if Johnny Orr had been able to recruit anyone to support him. Heck, Michigan used Bird Carter, all 6-1 of him, at pivot in order to let Rudy play his natural position of forward.
BTW, not to diminish Rudy's stature, but I've always questioned how rebounding stats were compiled back in the day. I covered the game for the Daily in which he broke Buntin's record, and decided to count every time Rudy touched the ball after a missed shot. I had fewer touches than the number of rebounds with which he was credited.

delete double post -- my boss had the temerity to come in while I was posting.
February 24th, 2016 at 8:51 PM ^
Webber 4
Rudy T 5
Rose 1
Rice 3
Cazzie 2
Bench Players:
Trey Burke 1/2
Rickey Green 2/3
Gary Grant 1/2
Loy Vaught 3/4
February 24th, 2016 at 9:23 PM ^
Basically I agree with your starters.
And I love me some Loy, but I'd have to take Juwan over Loy if it came to that.

if he was on the court, he was in range. i would love to see what he would have scored with a 3-point line. he was deadly.

You lost me with writing, "R U f'ing kidding me???"
When you write something like that, you're impugning the judgment of all who took part in the poll. These polls are all completely subjective, and will always be a source of contention.
I started at Michigan in the mid-70's. I certainly remember Ricky Green. I played ball at the CCRB with Rice, actually guarding him. I lived next to Tarpley and Wade and Rellford, and actually had some of their Michigan basketball shoes. The problem, as you well know, is that it is literally impossible to compare. You have different coaches, different surrounding players, different eras.
I'll go with Cazzie, Rice, and Webber to begin. For me, Green and Trey are a tossup. Same with Rudy and Jalen (who played different positions). You may hate Webber, and his attitude, and what he did to Michigan, but the talent he had was mind-boggling, to me at least.
I get that you value different players. But I hate your attitude towards those who you disagree with.

to me he was the best C we ever had, he would be in my starting 5 somehow.
Rice SF
Cazzie SG
WebberPF
Tarpley C
Jalen PG
Burke, Howard, Hubbard, Green, Campy Russell would be a nice bench

CAZZIE
February 24th, 2016 at 10:04 PM ^
For Rose and Burke, those of us a bit older could argue for Gary Grant and Rumeal Robinson. But it's a hard argument. Also, in terms of just basketball, was Chris Webber really better than Roy Tarpley? I think this is a fun conversation.

At center Cwebb was the most spactacularly talented, Bill Buntin may have been the best all around player, Rudy T the best shooter, and Phil Hubbard I feel would have been the best if he had stayed healthy. Tarpley may have been best had he stayed clean.
I've had this bar room discussion with people smarter than me and Bill Bunton seems to be the consensus. He was All American in two of his three years and always averaged over 20 points and double digit rebounds.
