Advice re: no spoiler for this week's game

Submitted by hopkinsdrums on

Hello all,

I apologize if this is a little self-centered...I'm going to be pre-disposed to some family matters this Saturday and unfortunately won't be able to watch or listen to the game on Saturday. That being said, I would like to at least listen to the game in its entirety (long drive on Sunday) without being spoiled on social media or even this blog. I've turned off all theScore notifications on my phone and will not check the various internet media that may spoil it.

The problem is that I need to find a way to listen to the game on Sunday. Ideally I'd be able to download a radio broadcast or something like that and just play it back. Any ideas on how this could be done, maybe one of the radio apps or something? Or maybe a more creative solution? It would be much appreciated. Thanks fellow mgobloggers.

Reminds me of the scene from Office Space where he is talking to his psychiatrist about how miserable his life is... "But is there any way that you could just sock me out so there's no way that I'll know I'm at work? Can I just come home and think I've been fishing all day or something?"

So I've used Tune in radio to listen to some sports talk shows in the morning, and at times have hit the pause button, then came back after a couple hours and was able to listen in on all the show I missed (it continued to cache in the background), but I don't know if you could do that for an entire game for an entire day.

Was in the same situation last week but decided to keep an eye on the game in realtime via the ESPN scorecast app. You can check in every 20 minutes or so and know what is going on. Then when you get home watch the game on you DVR.

This is a good suggestion (my other one notwithstanding). I really think that it isn't worth going into a radio blackout for the NW game. My son was playing Freshman ball at 11:30am EST, so I missed the first half against Maryland. Turns out that wasn't a bad thing.

I would just make sure that no important family members schedule anything for the MSU or OSU games. In fact, I would tell them now you have plans, and won't be available for any events during those two blocks of four hours.

This is interesting. I'm trying to fenagle my way into getting it on my phone somehow. Thanks for this!

Edit: if I'm on wifi prior to the drive, I can let this fully cache in the background and then just press play offline and listen the entire ride home. Excellent solution. Thank you!

Live and "on demand."   (Today's 12:15 press conference will be live at... 12:15.)  And free.

Dan Dierdorf and Jim Brandstatter with the (very enthusiastic) call, and there's usually a streamed pre-game show, including pre-taped interviews with coaches/players, etc., and a postgame show with live interviews.

It's usually not a long wait for it to be available for replay after the postgame has signed off.   The link above takes you to the live page.  If it's no longer listed there, click the On Demand tab to listen later.  Lots of good stuff to be found.

In my limited experience, you can DVR and delay watching a game a couple hours or so. But a full day? You are really going to have to stay away from all media. Turn off your cell phone. No TV. No radio. No contact with anyone who knows you are a Michigan fan. Even some gas stations have broadcast scores at the pump. To maintain radio silence for a 24 hour period is very difficult. Good luck, and let us know how it goes.

Or notify people...I climbed a mountain during the ORegon State game and wanted to watch the tape that evening, but my girlfriend got drunk and texted me something about Michigan winning  before I got a chance to watch. Trust no one, especially those closest to you.

My wife and I do media blackout every weekend for Michigan games new Dvr and watch when the kids to go sleep. Here are some tips:

Turn off your phones. Ours go off at kickoff.

Avoid restaurants and stores with televisions.

If you must attend some function (I have kids sporting events), make sure that you warn everyone who you know that you are on blackout and ask them not to say a thing about the game.

Pre-set televisions in your house to safe channels, in case the kids turn on the tv. Cooking channels and other similar stations are work well. Then, when the kids turn on the tv, they can call up the Dvr for their kids shows without any risk of finding out the score.

leaves her phone on.  She is a huge Michigan fan and we take all the above precautions but she leaves it on against my protests.  Facebook has spoiled two blackouts for me and I voiced my displeasure to her.  She still leaves it on but does not check facebook.

I only miss games due to travel or kid stuff too.

WEAR HEADPHONES EVERYWHERE and listen to music. You never want to overhear another parent or person blurt out a spoiler.

Also, don't wear any Michigan gear /obvious
Or look at people in Michigan gear, you don't want to worry about if they look bewildered or elated.

We have a few M fans on our sidelines for kids soccer games.

I often have to DVR the game & make sure I don't wear any M gear.
Otherwise it's just a license for some to walk past and ask you "are we still leading by 10?" etc.

man, that kind of bubble is not possible. Just make sure you can watch the State game, you may just have to miss this one and watch it knowing the outcome.  It is not ideal, but it happens to the best of us from time to time.  I have a family event in Saturday at 5:00 - I am going to try to stay in the bubble until I get home but even that will be challenging.

Lost power at 1:21pm.  Power came back on ~4:30 pm.  I had to record the 8pm showing, and avoid all sports media until I could resume watching the game on the re-broadcast.  Managed to accomplish this, & thought I was in the clear.  Then I saw BTN scroll the final score at the bottom of the screen during the re-broadcast.

I gave up on this a long time ago.  You are betting off searching for a way to bring your phone into the family matters on Saturday afternoon.  You would not only not need to have contact with any form of broadcast media or social media but also no contact with anyone who knows you are a Michigan fan or people who come in contact with anyone who knows you are a Michigan fan.  And also don't wear anything that suggests you are a Michigan fan.  It isn't worth it.  People come up to at events and tell you the score.  The guy on the airline PA announces the score.  I used to unplug my phone at home because people would call and my wife would pick it up despite my telling her not to.  It just isn't worth it.

I'll have my kids draw pictures of the game as it unfolds.  we'll email them to you right before you get in the car on sunday.   some of my kids draw very well, really.  some of them, not so much.  it'll take you a good 3 hours to figure out what happened b/w the good pics and the bad ones.

play the fight song on your radio as you drive, heck, it'll be like being in the big house.

if this Michigan defense is as good as I think it is, things could get pretty gruesome.  Don't know if it will be appropriate subject matter for your kids to draw.

My best advice would be to find a national broadcast. You will most definitely pull your hair out or run into the median listening to JB and DD... Just horrible

Lots of good suggestions here.  It gets harder and harder all the time.  For me, knowing anything about the game before watching it is really disappointing.  Lots of people just don't get that mindset, but to each their own.

I think your best bet is the suggestion to use the student radio broadcast link mentioned above.  The key is finding something that won't have the score in the title or the linked page.

Another option depends on your resources at home.  I don't know what options are available for different cable providers or Dish/DTV.  For my TiVo, I can record the game then download the game to an iDevice or Android to watch later.  You could then conceivably listen to the TV broadcast while driving.  More and more cable operators are allowing you to do the same thing.

But, like I said, the big challenge is not hearing the outcome.  Depending on where you are, this could be harder or easier.  In the state of Michigan, or anywere between Chicago and Michigan you're going to have a really hard time.  ProTip: Don't wear a Michigan shirt or hat on the way home.  I've had games spoiled at gas stations and one time by a TSA guy in an airport.  Steer clear of news broadcasts and remember to turn off MGoBlog notifications on all your devices where you have the App installed.

Good luck.

you're looking for audio so this should not be a problem for you. My dvr recording failed last weekend fur to tune and channel shifts. So I waited until I knew the game was over and launched the BTN2GO app hoping ti find a replay. I did - with the score in huge font overlaying the video. Oh well, I at least avoided a bunch of angst I would have had watching the first half live. Why would anyone think it's a good idea to post the outcome on a replay broadcast?
