Good luck to him. Sounds like a nice guy.

Former walk-on linebacker Adam Shibley was named to the Wuerffel Trophy watch list. The Wuerffel Trophy goes to the college football player "who best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement."

Yes, Wuerffel was basically Tebow (but with outstanding grades) before Tebow.  He quite famously declined all-American recognition from Playboy (which used to put out a very prominent pre-season all-America list) because he did not want to be associated with pornography.

Here's a wikipedia tidbit I did not know:

"[Wuerffel] is one of only two Heisman Trophy winners to also receive the Draddy Trophy, which is presented annually by the National Football Foundation and the College Football Hall of Fame to the nation's top football scholar-athlete."

He probably showed enough to get paid somewhere. Maybe MAC schools or a Big Ten school with a need for LBs.

Who knows, with a couple years with starter minutes somewhere, he gets a shot at the NFL.

Good luck to the young man. Can't wish him ill to pursue a dream like that.

To put into context, 5 of those 14 are previous walk ons on the team

Yeah, I'm much more concerned with the number of 4 & 5-star transfers like Solomon, Vilian, Singleton, Anthony, etc.  And, to be honest I don't really care about guys transferring after their 3rd year because that means they aren't starters and were likely mis-IDed as recruits.  It's the Hudson types that you hate to see go who had a role and left because he was mad at the coaches versus a walk on or a guy going into his junior year that still hasn't cracked the 2-deep.  But, certainly when you turn over your entire defensive staff minus the line coach, chances are some of the guys going to leave now that they no longer fit into the scheme.  And, that's in addition to normal attrition of 3rd and 4th year guys looking for PT.  That being said it would be nice to see the sort of devotion it's players get at OSU who seem content to wait until their 4th and 5th years to play.  But, winning conference titles and getting to playoff and NC games certainly helps I'm sure.

Charbonet and Carpenter hurt.

Carpenter for sure.  I can only assume that the result of losing Warriner.  But, it was needed to make room for Hart & Bellomy.  I would have loved to keep Warriner too.  I'm not sure Charbonnet hurts.  I mean it sucks to lose a high 4-star.  I would have preferred it be mostly Haskins & Charbonnet last year and let Corum RS, but they obviously believed he had a role.  But, the reality is Haskins was more productive than Charbonnet and they are the same year of eligibility so unless Haskins leaves for the NFL he's going to be stuck behind him his whole career.  Add to that Edwards coming in next year and Charbonnet is just unfortunate, but doesn't really hurt.  We are deep at RB.

Holding onto Jennings would’ve been nice he’d be a great Mike in the presumptive system to be installed.

To me the more disappointing thing is our highest rated guys are not our most productive players.  Compare Gary to Winovich.  Gary was a much higher rated recruit, but Winivich was much more productive.  Same with DPJ vs Collins & Bell.  Same with Charbonnet vs Haskins.  Same with Paye vs Vilain.  Same with Bush, Uche, Hudson, & Glasgow vs Anthony, Singleton, & Ross.  Same with Gray vs Sims & Perry.  Same with Vastardis, Spanellis, Carpenter & Honingford vs Jones, Rumler, Hall, etc.  I don't know why this trend keeps happening over and over.  But, if you look at teams like OSU, Clemson, & Bama their best players are their highest rated recruits.  Our highest rated recruits often don't pan out and that is a problem.  If all these guys played supporting roles and were still productive, but DPJ, Gary, Charbonnet, Vilain, Sims, Perry, etc. all played like top 200 recruits and were even more productive than their supporting guys UM be an 11-12 win team.  We still wouldn't be better than OSU, but we'd pretty much dominate the rest of the B1G of whom we are significantly more talented than.  We need our highest rated recruits to be our best players the way Chase Young, Wyatt Davis, Josh Myers, JK Dobbins, Jeff Okaduh, & Justin Fields were for OSU.  That needs to be our DPJ, Aubrey Solomon, Drew Singleton, Jordan Anthony, Luiji Vilain, Chuck Filiaga, Ambry Thomas, & Dylan McCaffrey.  But, we all know how their 2017 class turned out vs ours :/

Over the last few years, Michigan certainly hasn’t been more talented than PSU or Wisconsin. On average, they’ve probably been less talented.

In the 6 classes that JH has been at UM, he's had a higher ranked class than Franklin 5 out of 6 years and every class has been way higher than Wiscy's.

2016

  • UM - #8
  • PSU - #20
  • Wiscy - #35

2017

  • UM - #5
  • PSU - #15
  • Wiscy - #35

2018

  • UM - #22
  • PSU - #6
  • Wiscy - #46

2019

  • UM - #8
  • PSU - #12
  • Wiscy - #29

2020

  • UM - #14
  • PSU - #15
  • Wiscy - #26

2021

  • UM - #10
  • PSU - #15
  • Wiscy - #21

Average

  • UM - #11.2
  • PSU - #13.8
  • Wiscy - #32

There were basically no seniors and everyone got an extra year of eligibility. You have to clear the scholarships for the guys coming in somehow.

I'm guessing there are some hard conversations going on. Most of them are probably better for the exiting players than riding the bench for another year, or finding out later they don't have a spot.

Some of them might be culture or attitude issues. Obviously we didn't have a good culture last year. It appears that was mostly on the coaches, but maybe there was a player or two that just don't fit.

Addition by subtraction is a real thing on a Team. No offense to any of them.

In my experience locker room culture is tied to the players more so than coaches...Jimmy Johnson didn’t make those leaders and that culture all those years ago in Miami it was the Bennie Blades and Mike Irving’s getting interface of anyone on those teams that didn’t go 100.

I agree, and that is my experience as well. But it is quite obvious our coaches did not work together well last year. Coaches can create factionalism in the locker room. Assuming that problem is solved, the next job is to make sure the players left that all behind too. Some of them won't. Those guys have to go.

Just the way it is. Loyalty is good, but you can be too loyal, especially at that age.

I think it's both.  The two work hand in hand.  The coaches recruit the right players and cultivate leadership amongst their players, but at some point the players have to step up and lead.  We've had some good leaders in the past under JH in 2016 with Peppers and 2018 with Bush & Winovich.  I think Hutch can be that type of guy on defense.  Unfortunately we haven't had many the past two seasons and have not had good leaders at QB, which we need.  Then again Haskins was shit and OSU was still phenomenal with him.  The players need to produce.  Ideally your best players are also your leaders.  This is how that model works best.  It doesn't help when the guys who are supposed to be our most talented players like Patterson & DPJ aren't setting good examples.  And, I think some other guys like Bredeson & Paye are just quiet guys.  Hopefully Dax, Ross, Hinton, & Hutch can develop into leaders next year on defense and Haskins, Bell, Filiaga, & Hayes can do so on offense.

Not sure how many are aware of how special this Wolverine was off the field. I am disappointed that we couldn't find a place for someone that represents UM so well, but I give the coaches credit for obviously letting him know where he stood.

As the founder of the charitable organization, TUFF, I am proud to call him a Michigan Man.

Shibley? I barely knew ye.

Best wishes to the young man. It's good to see walk-ons developing to the point where they can go to another school and, hopefully, snag a scholarship.

ILB depth was a concern going into the season, it proved to be a concern during the season and Shibley certainly showed some promise. Now, ILB depth is a giant black hole.

2 linebackers in 2 weeks.  What is Macdonald's problem!? /s

But seriously help me out with the change in philosophy of defense. Would these two not see as much time on the field?

Probably a good move.  This could mean a move to 3-4 and he doesn't fit as well any longer.  But, he was also a former walk-on so I don't necessarily ever expect those guys to turn into starters unless their name is Glasgow.  I didn't expect to see him taking over for Ross or Barrett, then you've Solomon coming into year #3 and Mullings, Hill-Green, & Wheeler coming into year #2 and of course Colson although a true freshman is a top 100 guy and the #5OLB in the class.  I'm not sure Hood is ready, but Colson is already 228 lbs on his recruiting profile, so he's probably well over that now.
