5* QB Jadyn Davis not concerned about M's run-pass balance

Submitted by Communist Football on November 4th, 2022 at 9:06 PM

There's been a lot of understandable concern recently about whether or not Michigan's run-heavy offense would turn off QB and WR recruits, especially 2024 5* QB Jadyn Davis. In a new interview with 247's Brian Dohn, Davis directly contradicted those concerns.

"I think a lot of people put a flag on them for running the ball," said Davis. "I mean, we have Blake Corum. If you have Blake Corum and Donovan Edwards in the backfield, I'd hand the ball off, too...The quarterback's best friend is the run game because it opens up the passing game."

Much more in the 247 article, including strong indications that Davis is more likely than not to end up a Wolverine.

I used to get my intellectual fix reading thoughtful insights in the NY Times Letters to the Editor. Then I switched over to London and The Guardian. But then... my Sparty brother-in-law turned me on to the RCMB. It's been life altering. Forget Saul on the road to Damascus, it's me on the road to East Lansing. If they sayin' Dante Moore is comin' like Tuck, why of course it's true! If they say no quarterback would go to Michigan because we only run the ball run, don't walk, to bet your house on it.

It's unlikely but in this day and age of NIL, it's not as unlikely as it would have been. All it'll take is the right person or people making him an offer he can't refuse.

Financially speaking, not a violent assault or worse. Tennessee threw $8M at that California kid. MSU would need just one or a few wealthy donors that still believe in Tucker to drop a few more bucks. Sometimes people spend more on a bad investment before accepting that it was a bad investment.

I talked about Moore a few times back when I gave the info I had. I haven't heard about or asked about Moore in a while but I'll say that the strong feeling the entire time was that he would prefer to stay local. If any of UM, ND & MSU offered close to what Oregon did he'd be there. I'm sure of that. Anything more than the relative nothing in comparison to Oregon and I'm not just talking direct compensation. For all the promises of networking, business connections and such that programs boast about, no other program could offer what Oregon did via Nike. They didn't even try from what I heard and all three will regret that because I sincerely believe that Moore is the best QB in this cycle and possibly the last two or three cycles. He's a QB that can win you a National Championship and not just a good QB recruit, a rare difference maker. I'd take him over Arch Manning every day of the week.

Anyway, MSU ponying up at the last minute to snag him wouldn't surprise me that much at all. Very unlikely but it can be done.

I don’t know man. It sounds reasonable I guess but Oregon looks great outside of the season opener against UGA. MSU has been an embarrassment on and off the field and is losing high end commits left and right. I really don’t see how they could have any chance to pull this off. NIL money isn’t going to matter when your competitor is Oregon. I’m fairly certain he can cash in just fine there.

Thing is rich people got rich for a reason. They dont like throwing away millions. Once you throw huge amounts of cash at Texas A and M players. Tucker, MSU players etc and the results are a disaster it will burn that bridge forever. Whoever spent that money on Tucker wont make that mistake again. You get one shot with big NIL money and if the results are there it will keep coming in but if not itll run dry quickly.

They think it was ok that their players gang assaulted our players and the our players deserved it.

They are delusional.

They are like the really drunk offensive dude who is convinced the hot girl likes him and all she wants to do is leave as soon as possible because he ruined her night.

Dante Moore is not going to MSU especially now

If you are and NFL QB talent at Michigan you will get drafted.

Eh, I’d say the truth lies somewhere in the middle. I wouldn’t call it “horseshit message board wankery” to say that most recruits want to go play at a school that will showcase their abilities as much as possible.

I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that top tier WRs are going to want to go to the good teams that also put up big passing numbers. Same for QBs.

Now there are enough quality recruits and Michigan is a big enough program that you’ll find quality players to fill that void and maintain a good program. Guys, like JJ and Davis, where it’s maybe not a huge factor to them. But it also means you’re not going to pull in an OSU-esque WR haul. I think that’s more what people are referring to.

Right and I think the argument from most fans is that a more prolific and “exciting” offense is the path to getting more of those high end recruits. I can’t really argue against that line of thinking.

Failure to do so isn’t going to completely turn off every good recruit and turn us into Northwestern, but the likelihood is that it WILL keep us from turning us into OSU/Bama/Georgia. We’ll be stuck in that top 5-10 program range where we get into the playoff every few years (well, much more regularly once it goes to 12 teams) but if we want to be consistent contenders that actually have a shot at a title we do need better recruits.

This needs to stop. I don’t like that Sam Webb said it either. Stop making it into a story that WRs are going to transfer and we won’t get any recruits because we don’t throw the ball 50 times a game. Right now we run the ball a ton because

A. We have the best OL in the country

B. We have Blake Corum

C. We have a QB they still have the training wheels on. Doesn’t mean we will never be a team with a good passing game.

Georgia won the whole damn thing with a walk on and a TE for crying out loud. I generally like Sam and love his show. But he was harping on this way too much this week. But he specifically said he did not have any info that this is a problem.

Agree that we are going to be fine. JJ has proved that he can make all types of throws. He will when needed. I cannot believe someone even asked this question to Jadyn.

That statement is knocking the talent that surrounded Stetson Bennett last year. He had George Pickens (5 star and 2nd round draft pick), Bowers as you mentioned who is an exceptional talent at TE, Adonai Mitchell and Jermaine Burton. The first three guys are all 6-3 and above and were good at high pointing the ball and making contested catches. Our WR are I think above average, but not on par with what Georgia had last year. I’m not saying that Georgia was some juggernaut passing attack, but they were good enough to get the job done on the biggest stage. I hope our crew is up to the challenge in C-bus because the passing attack will be needed.

We are in the middle of the best U of M run in 50 years. Like the OOC schedule its not as exciting but fans are playing checkers while Jim is playing chess. Top 5 ranking for two full seasons? Yeah if we lose players that we really dont need to get to these levels anyways I really cant be all that worried. Until the results on the field change you got to have some faith. 20-2 and people want to change it up? Throw a UCLA (a loss in this game changes our season I dont care what Seth/Brian say) game in there because maybe it might tie brake us the day after the season is over? Sling it more because why not it sure beats a for sure 8-0 start? I dont know man there is a reason why coaches coach and fans are on message boards. Myself included.

We have a QB they still have the training wheels on.

I think this hurts your argument rather than helping. CJ Stroud in his second year at OSU was a Heisman finalist. Bryce Young in his second year at Alabama won the Heisman. I don't think you want to tell recruits that at Michigan 5-star QBs still have the training wheels on in their sophomore season (or redshirt freshman season).

I agree with this and would also ask, what evidence do we have that UM has the training wheels on? Harbaugh hasn’t had dynamic passing attacks at UM no matter who the QB is. We’re averaging 223 yards passing this year, which is one of the higher averages for a Harbaugh-coached UM team (highest was 250 in 2019). On some level what we’re seeing with JJ is simply the nature of our offense. We don’t ask QBs to do that much and would prefer that they not if we can run the ball.

I wouldn’t look at yards. At this point, Colorado State/Hawaii/UConn are still 3/8ths of U-M’s schedule, so they warp the numbers compared with previous full seasons.

A fairer metric is pass attempts per game in B1G play. U-M is 12th in the B1G. They were 6th last season. That suggests they do indeed have the training wheels on, at least with respect to the volume of passing plays.

I listened to a recruiting podcast for the first time in maybe ever, and it sounds like he’s a pretty raw QB, not nearly as polished with his passing or running as JJ…if that’s true, playing in his first starts with a great Oline and run game, and lots of dump offs to TEs should be perfect for developing him into his potential.
