5* OSU DB Tyreke Johnson in the Transfer Portal

Submitted by PrestigeWorldwide on May 12th, 2021 at 5:06 PM

No idea if he has any interest, but maybe Clink can get a quick win right out of the gate. Crefit questions abound, coming from OSU, but would maybe open some eyes if our biggest rivals credits wont transfer directly to Michigan. Anyway, former 5* DBs are always welcome, even former Buckeyes!

I'm going to classify this as unlikely. The only mention of Tyreke Johnson on this site is a half-sentence blurb at the tail end of a 2016 recruiting round-up when he was still a rising junior. According to 247, Chris Partridge was his primary recruiter.

If he’s leaving, that likely means there is someone even better in front of him.  And no, he won’t come here.  Even OSU transfer portal players seem to have more loyalty than former Michigan coaches.

The kid was buried on their DB depth chart and has seen zilch playing time and keep in mind, their DB was putrid last year.  By far and away their worst position group.  They got drilled by several teams last year - especially Indiana and Alabama. Why the hell would we be interested in a player that played behind players that SUCKED ?  Because he was a 5-star in HIGH SCHOOL ?  Give me a break.

Has to be NT/DT. We have Hinton and Smith as our only hope at having a running stuffing NT that can consistently hold ground against double teams. We seem to desperately be looking for any 320+ lb DT we can get in the portal. If your interior DL is weak against the run in a 3-4 D the opposing team will kill is without even needing to attempt a pass. Every game will feel like we are playing Wisconsin.

Was hoping Tyreke would finally break out this year to show production to match his potential. Obviously it's not his true potential, getting passed up by underclassmen who were ranked lower as recruits.

He may have been a 5* in his recruitment, but he's probably not any better than a 3.5* at this point.

I must be missing something with the regular "OSU QBs in the NFL" talk that's seems to be a constant on this board. Those QBs - that some are constantly slamming - have been kicking our asses for the better part of 20 years now.  Both UM and OSU play in CF - not the NFL,  We even have a former successful  NFL QB as head coach that can't figure out how to beat them - hell, lately how to keep the game close against a team with QBs that flop in the NFL

Given his class, he's probably graduated so transferring credits won't matter.

Even if he's not, it's not like OSU is some joke of an academic institution. Because Michigan and Northwestern are midwestern Ivies, we tend to forget that pretty much all B1G schools are excellent institutions (except Nebraska). You mention Purdue, but I'm willing to bet OSU is a better school for pretty much everything except engineering (and they still have a pretty good engineering school).

Michigan can be a bit ridiculous when it comes to transferring credits. It has little to do with the quality of the school and more to do with the inflexibility of the admissions office. Some schools will take credits for classes they don't offer and count them toward something that's "close enough." For example, if you took a course called "Keynesian Economics," some schools might just transfer it in as "Economics" or "20th Century Economics" or whatever they offer that can fit. Michigan won't do this for some reason.

That's silly. It entirely depends on your major. If you're majoring in journalism? Yeah, Northwestern is probably the place to go. Creative writing? Iowa has everyone beat. Also, your tier 3 and 4 are pretty much all better than any SEC schools (Vanderbilt has a reputation, but I'd bet all of those exceed it in terms of research, available programs, and alumni influence).

If you insist on ranking them, there are only three tiers: 1) Michigan an NU 2) Everyone else but Nebraska 3) Nebraska.

But, that comes with the caveat that your program is everything. If you want to specialize in optimizing cardboard boxes, MSU is the best school in the B1G (and maybe the country) for you. Maybe even Nebraska has something they're good at.

Odds of me having an orgy with the Swedish Bikini team in the 90's might be better than an OSU player transferring to Michigan.  Their fan base would pepper the family's mailbox with daily death threats.  Much easier to go some other university than a 20 year old to have to deal with that.

I’m not so sure. Osu had a pretty good front seven to help their DB’s out, yet they still sucked. Other than the 4th quarter against Minnesota, I don’t remember our guys getting very much pressure. Maybe our DB’s would’ve played better if they were able to get as much pressure as OSU’s front. Maybe not.
