There’s high upside to his athleticism and fact he’s been playing wr and cb and will now focus solely on defense, however he is still s 3* with not too many blue chip offers. There wasn’t anything negative in the post about his rating or in the write up aside from needing to add muscle and mass in general, however he’s needed for the class and Click likes him so that should suffice for now. Ewald is next class, and the current one has Hill and with Johnson, Walker, and McBurrows the CB room should be stocked for a bit.

3* is SUCH a broad category it’s almost a useless measure of a player. The MGoStaff’s reranking of a player is far more instructive.

OTOH, I love the ex-post-facto “let’s rerank the 2018 recruiting class” articles that you see around sometimes. It’s a good reminder that a LOT of good players come from low rankings, and sometimes 5* players flop in college.

This would actually be a good thing to look into. Look at former 5* players from each class, who went to the NFL, who stayed with the college they committed to, and how much they played or their position ranking during the season. If you look at the 2020 class of 32 5* players, 13 are not in the NFL (Yet, I'm sure many will get drafted next year). Of those 13, 8 entered the transfer portal, with 2 still in it.

Again with 2019, 14 of 32 aren't in the NFL, which again they can still be drafted next year. Of those 14, 9 went into the portal. 2 are in JUCO, and I don't know the stats on any juco players getting drafted.

This young man actually played (plays?) ball with Coach Clinks' son back in KY so there was a certainly a strong connection there and familiarity by the staff with his game.

Kid has been talked about as a potential big riser - I think this is more than just "spin" as I seem to recall hearing it before we missed out on Scott.

He has a HS teammate that is also a top WR target for M in the '25 class.

And, there’s a rumor - which Harbaugh has acknowledged - the food served at Schembechler Hall is not only healthy, it also tastes good.  Oh, the humanity.

This “insight” about food - could easily be an added, and unaccounted benefit for student athletes.  My two children are current students at Michigan - and, neither has said the food at Markley, Bursley, or other campus dining facilities is both good for you and tastes good.

I fear the NCAA is going to present Michigan with the Death Penalty for this egregious perceived imbalance.

What's odd?

UM went after its top targets on the board. Unfortunately, these young men were from the state of Ohio and the tall task of landing them did not come to fruition.

So UM cycled back on some lower ranked (nationally) guys who they had on their board and had interest in. They seem to fit the mold of moldable, athletic guys with potential upside if they hit.

Seems pretty straightforward.

We lost them to OSU, who was also in the playoff this year and has made the playoff 5 times, including 3 of the last 4 years… They’re also no slouch when it comes to getting DBs to the NFL, and they have a better track record of getting them drafted higher than us as well. oh yeah, and those guys happened to be from Ohio and grew up OSU fans…

There was nothing odd about losing those guys. It’s unfortunate, sure. But you can’t say it doesn’t make total sense for them to pick OSU given all that we know.

Ok some of you don't seem to get what I'm saying. It's ODD to me that the only 4 star DBs they went after was Scott and West? Not sure why this is some controversial take. I didn't say it's odd that 2 Ohio kids picked OSU, it's odd that after 2 four star kids from Ohio go to OSU our only response is to then go after two 3 star players. If this isn't a odd year for DB recruiting, you are lying to yourself

There are locations outside of Ohio who have highly ranked CBs.  As said above it's a national program - can recruit outside of Ohio Illinois Indiana and Michigan last I checked.  Should have allocated 1 spot hoping 1 of the 2 fell to them and recruited as if 0 or 1 would come here as that was the reality all along amongst the other 48 states. (obviously most of the talent is in 8-10 states)

It was not a great CB haul "on paper". They are clearly now going for their (pun not intended) secondary choices based on timing of these acceptances.

Will Johnson who the board is fawning over was not a 3*. Sure we can develop 3* but it sure helps to have a good amount of 5* to create a higher floor.

Great addition, much needed depth after striking out on top guys this cycle.

Ideally he gets developed well like Turner and Moore and outperforms ranking. I fully expect this by now.

If not, worry not.  Jaiyre Hill next up and Will Johnson still has another year.  I'm sure other gems will be developed and more talent picked up in the portal and next cycle.

Aaron Scott would have been developed really well at UM and sucks to lose him to OSU, but I think it was actually a poor choice for him given UM's NFL style defense vs. whatever that is OSU has been putting out in the secondary the past few years.

Scott's commitment to OSU was definitely a case of heart winning out over head. No one (except OSU slappys) who has watched OSU's defensive play/development while Day has been HC could possibly think it compares favorably to what has been taking place at Michigan.

OSU has only had one player drafted on the defensive side of the ball in each of the last two drafts despite recruiting like gangbusters. Their player development on defense is mediocre at best. Elite prospects like Scott will still get drafted, but will he be drafted as high as he would have been had he made the smart choice and committed to UM? Personally, I doubt it.

Honestly, anyone with the requisite measurables is fine and can be coached up.  Outside of the top couple of obvious standout freaks at every position, the rest of the rankings is basically just throwing darts.

When you swing and miss on every single top dog target while you have a great recruiter like Clink doesn’t that make anyone wonder what the deal is?

Sorry but it’s hard to get excited about driving a Mustang when numerous chances to drive the Porsche fell through.

I know I know - standard reaction……well if the coaches want him I trust them. We can develop them. That mindset doesn’t really excuse the misses on the players that you would think would choose Michigan. CFP last 2 seasons and we are having to still resort to mostly 3* prospects at CB

If anyone thinks Will Johnson would of chosen Michigan if he wasn’t a home state product that’s probably a pipe dream. We would of missed on him also.

The kids offer list is pretty so so  - but we got him. I’m sure he’s good but elite? Sounds like fluff. Elite athletes are rarely ranked as 3*.

As far as I am concerned there really isn't any doubt at this point that UM's unwillingness to give elite players the "signing bonus" they require for their commitment is what is killing them on the recruiting trail. If UM is not going to change their stand on this issue (and I suspect they will not), then fans need to adjust their expectations for Michigan's recruiting classes downward pretty significantly as it will be extremely difficult to land Top 100 players.

It appears that UM's strategy for NIL is to get more "lottery tickets" by circumventing the 85 player scholarship limit via NIL "scholarships", thus giving them 100+ scholarship caliber players on the roster. Personally, I'd still prefer to see them going after the 5* players and just paying them what they require. Those are the difference making players that can help a team win national championships.

Regarding your last paragraph: This is not as simple and straight forward as the laymen believe it to be. Exhibit A is Ohio State and all the highly rated talent they have stacked into that roster. So what is their problem? While IMO their greatest issue is coaching, at the same time it should be noted that motivating these elite kids can be very challenging. Many of them have gotten by with mediocre effort for much of their lives and this can present significant issues to a coaching staff relative to the rest of the roster-and the effort and discipline less talented players need to play with in order to be successful.

Fans can doubt Michigan's roster management strategy all they wish but pragmatically, on the ground, it is working quite well.

I think you are doing WAY too much pearl clutching on this topic.

However....   Everyone touts Coach Clinkscale as a great recruiter, but he earned that rep. working at Cinci and Kentucky.... finding undervalued and underappreciated recruits for the most part and then beating out schools like Purdue or MSU to sign them.  The fish he is after at UM are a different species and it may require an adjustment to his technique and/or tactics to land some of these.

This is actually a very similar situation Coach Hart had recruiting at EMU and IU as compared to M.  It appears that he is trending in the right direction so I assume the same will happen with Clink.

With Lowe’s commitment, Michigan has pretty much wrapped up all the absolute needs of this class.   From here on out I’d say the staff will only swing for truly elite rated guys down the stretch to finish this ‘24 class.  Have a great season on the field, recruit a few big fish to finish a really good 2024 class, and already have an early jump start on the 2025 class.  Plus, there is always the transfer portal to fill any roster holes.  Recruiting is going just fine.

Good pickup.

Michigan needed to pivot after missing out on Scott and the two guys they got have the potential to be contributors...

Michigan has to take a few flyers at this stage and the two kids do seem like they have upside.
