247 Update on Recruiting of Gary

Submitted by Cranky Dave on
Steve Lorenz posted an update on 247 (link below) saying that Harbaugh called Rashan Gary's mother to talk about Durkin's departure. Neither Auburn nor Bama have done so since Muschamp and Smart have taken HC jobs. Even worse Gary was on a visit at Auburn a few days before Muschamp took the SC job and assured Gary and Mom he wasn't going anywhere....looking good for us! http://tinyurl.com/z4mgc9k Harbaugh Stays Honest With Nation's #1 Player

Didn't Durkin lie to Dontavius Jackson tho? I wonder what the word on Jackson is considering his tweet.

Any of the DCs are lying. I mean they may not have known 100% that they would be offered, what the terms were (not only money but control) and recruits would get on Twitter the second the coach left and post how Durkin was going to MD or Muschamp to SCar.

The more relevant thing is that Harbaugh was proactive.

the mother said she would have understood if he told her he was going after HC opportunities. So yea when you say you are going to be there when you know you have interest is HC opportunities, you lied

as far as I can tell it was Jackson merely calling someone a liar that claimed Durkin was in Maryland to sign the contract and Durkin was literally sitting next to Jackson. I don't know how open Durkin was (as he had to know it was a possibility he'd get the job) but that's not saying he/the staff lied.

To be fair, as fast as South Carolina moved through candidates, Muschamp may not have known he'd get an offer a few days before he accepted the job. He was clearly not their top choice and he had no way of knowing who above him would say no. How dumb would he look saying he was going to SC and then watching SC hire Rich Rod.

He might have thought (like most people did), that Dantonio was going to be South Carolinas coach next year. To be honest, I agree with what you're saying, but the fact is that he was employed at the time by Auburn and his job as an auburn coach was to recruit for auburn. Unless he had already been offered and accepted the SC job, he was still under contract to Auburn for the foreseeable future and he should express that. He might have decided that the only job he was going to take was SC, and they were apparently offering that job to Rich Rod. Job changes are always tricky, but you still have to do your job until you're employed by someone else. Besides, it helps us with Gary, so I'm not upset.

Most people?  Did anyone really think that a 60-year-old coach was going to leave the program he's turned into an elite machine to go to another disaster rebuilding project that really has no more upside than MSU?

I know it's his alma mater, but him going to that job was always a big reach.  I think the only real chance of him leaving is if the NFL comes calling, but even that seems unlikely to me.
