247 Analyst CB's 4* DE Quintin Somerville to Michigan

Submitted by Denarded on May 8th, 2020 at 10:01 AM

On Today's #BallsWatch 247's Mountain Regional analyst Blair Angulo made his Crystal Ball pick to Michigan for 4* Defensive End Quintin Somerville. Currently ranked #102 on the composite, #9 SDE in the country.

Listed at 6'1 230 so either that is outdated information or he is very undersized for a DE.

If that's really his size, he must be a crazy good athlete to be ranked so high. Devin Bush was "too small" and worked out great, so Quintin would be an awesome addition and a big get for Jay.

I mean cmon, now.  Our blog is so uptight that now we’ve instilled rules on how to use sarcasm.  Whew.  I’m always positive when it comes to my team, you can check me on that one.  These are not my words.  We can’t recruit DE’s, or DT’s.  There have been so many negative people in here lately when it comes to recruiting, I thought we were overdue for another bad joke, or two.

I guess it depends on if they want him to be a Winovich-type end or a DT-type.  I read this more as a future tackle, and so the height and weight felt off.  Yeah, if they plan on sticking him at the end and leaving him there then I agree he can grow a bit and be a solid performer there.  Hell, Uche's in the NFL at 6'2", 235.

That's what I'm interested in know about.  How does Don Brown see him?  I don't believe Somerville has the athletism/explosiveness/speed that Uche has.  So will he be a true pass-rush specialist or will he be placed on the DLine the whole time?

Either way, I'm sure Don has a place on his defense for the #102 overall player.

Agree, very interested to see how Don Brown uses him as well as defense overall.  3-3-5 and the 4-dime seems to be trending with dc's defending the spread.  A Dline that can control the los vs the run and still rush the passer on any given play has become paramount.

Yeah.  He's got the height to grow into a pretty stout defensive linemen you can move around, but I agree he's not an Uche-level athlete based on the limited stuff I see.  At the same time, putting on 40-50 pounds might not be feasible.

I do think the talk about Michigan going to a 3-3-5 base at times wouldn't shock me, or at least an acknowledgment that being more flexible in your front-7 configuration is a new way forward.

Recent Michigan CB's towards recruits- Junior Colson, Jaydon Hood, Drew Kendall, Xavier Worthy, Quintin Somerville and Tyler McLaurin. This would place UM as the 2nd ranked class in the country if they were end up committing. Still without factoring potential in-state players like Edwards, Spindler, Buddin, Benny, etc.

I used to wonder if they could track his ip addresses and ban him but now I think it might be funnier and better for the blog if they could track his ip addresses and continue to increase the costs just for his IPs when he goes to make another account after getting banned. It would be a beautiful experiment in how much someone will pay to yell "recruit better players" over and over again.

I'm serious when I say this... Jim needs to ditch the glasses, and ditch the old man look... can go a long way because he seems beaten down.... need that edge again, and perception is reality.  People wanna play for the guy on Stanford...not the guy who is looking like his father since his father moved back... yeah, I know, hes older... but the glasses are making it worse...

6'1 seems awfully small for a DE.  I'm assuming this is a typo and he's more on the 6'3+ end?

Somerville has some pretty good offers.  I'm sure they're committable offers for all those concerned.

Nua working his magic out in the west would be really nice.  Don't forget Jay Harbaugh is out there doing work as well.  Gotta give him credit if Somerville commits.

Michigan could use the infusion of youth in the coaching front (Nua & Jean-Mary) to help with the defensive recruiting.

Based on various profiles, The "best player in America", Chase Young was 235-240 coming in and  he's 6-3 to 6-4. WDE can be a lighter speed rusher if looking for a sack master, but needs the right pieces around him.

What UM lacks is a giant yet quick orb shaped object in the middle to clog up run lanes and penetrate gaps right off the snap. Everyone else on the D-line and defense in general look significantly better when you have that elite DT disrupting every play.

FWIW, I believe Chase Young is an extremely overrated 1 trick pony that benefitted from playing on an overall elite D-line.  He's an incredible speed rusher around the edge with great bend and good leverage and power.  He's very average against the run and was shut down 1 on 1 when facing good to elite linemen like against UM and Clemson. This is not OSU hate, as I think both Bosa brothers are incredible, complete players at the DE position - both far superior to Young. I think the hype train went off the rails with Young last year because of his sack numbers early in the season and OSU's overall dominating D-line, but I see him getting exposed in the NFL against elite tackles unless he adds to his technique and ability to read and stop the run.

TLDR - A lighter weight speed rushing WDE can work out great in college if coupled with DT's that are controlling the line of scrimmage, but they can get exposed quickly when run at or against elite tackles.

If the one trick that a pony knows demands the offense's attention on every play, that is very valuable. If he performs in the NFL as he did in college (the good and the bad), he will require 90% of the offenses he plays against to account for him on passing downs. That is easily early first round value.

Thank you... not sure what game BoHarbaugh was watching, or if he really understands football? When you're sliding a guard over to double team, and also chipping with your RB or TE as a third blocker at times, that's one OSU defender demanding 2-3 offensive players almost every play. Not to mention the quick slants and rolling the QB out away from him. But hey.. he didn't have a sack against UM so he must be overrated. Face palm.

He'll be just fine in the league, just like both Bosa's.

I was watching both the UM and Clemson games where he was lined up against good (2nd or 3rd round NFL type) tackles and had little to no impact on the game.  UM did not double or chip him on 90% of its plays, and were most successful running the ball towards his side.  Clemson wrecked him all game with QB and RB runs to his side. He was billed as dominant like Suh, and looked pedestrian against good competition.

Both Bosa brothers have wrecked teams at both the college and NFL levels despite double teams while facing elite tackles.  The Bosa’s simply look better and more elite to me as both edge rushers and run stopping defenders. Chase Young is a great edge rusher at the college level, but he looks like an incomplete player that can get exposed by elite tackle play.

This is not about OSU bias.  As I said, I think both Bosas are dynamite players.  I think Rashan Gary is a borderline bust.

Based on the chase Young for Heisman, best player in America hype train, I was expecting him to destroy us.  He was a complete non-factor, and was absent in OSU’s most important game of the year, Clemson.  The best and most dominant college D-lineman I ever saw was N Sue, and the hype was billing Young as that type of impact player.  He simply wasn’t.

I think my original point, and the comment I replied to was: He was a "non-factor" because both UM and Clemson schemed to specifically take him out of the game. Wisconsin did the same in the B1G Championship, also to great effect. The reason, he had 4 sacks against them the first time they played (the same Wisconsin team that rolled through UM). When a player has to be accounted for every play, and teams are doubling him, chipping him, etc, that IS having an impact on the game. He was pretty much unanimously agreed upon to be the best player in the draft, led the nation in sacks despite missing two games, selected number 2 overall, and received an absolute gaggle of awards last season.

It just makes me chuckle a little when I read some internet experts sit here and say "He was overrated and I knew it" because in their eyes, "he was a non-factor". Agree to disagree, like I said... this isn't the hill I'm going to die on on a UM fan blog.
