247 2021 Football Rankings Update
https://247sports.com/Season/2021-Football/RecruitRankings/?InstitutionGroup=HighSchool
247 just updated their football rankings for 2021, so thought I'd share where some of our commits and targets are now ranked:
QB JJ McCarthy #16 --> #21
RB Donovan Edwards #60 --> #22
TE Thomas Fidone #315 --> #40
OT Rocco Spindler #31 --> #63
OT Garrett Dellinger #36 --> #75
C David Davidkov #107 --> #83
OT Giovanni El Hadi #65 --> #87
DT Tywone Malone #96 --> #118

Fidone making quite the leap!
February 19th, 2020 at 2:18 PM ^
Spindler and Dellinger are both Guards and Davidkov a Tackle.
RB and TE evaluation remain incredibly good. Fidone has been our top target for a while, same with Edwards (he was obvious though). TreVeyon Henderson is now a five star. AJ Green is now a high four star. Really killing the evals here.
I don't understand El-Hadi and Spindler dropping. They both just got big reviews from a camp and El-Hadi got a big bump up on Rivals.
February 19th, 2020 at 2:40 PM ^
Might be another case of guys behind them making big leaps up the list. Someone has to move down. It happens all the time. I don't think a 10-20 spot drop is much to talk about unless you're a five star anyway.
February 19th, 2020 at 2:44 PM ^
Right, I get that, but they were guys moving up on other sites. Just seems like they were trending towards 5 star status rather than being more entrenched as 4 stars.
Doesn't change who they are as players, just more fun to see kids from Michigan rated so highly.
February 19th, 2020 at 2:57 PM ^
I haven't done any research into this so I'm curious which camps they went to. I know rivals has a tendency to rate players higher that go to their camps.
February 19th, 2020 at 3:08 PM ^
They were both recently at Under Armour (ESPN) and Rivals camps I believe. El-Hadi definitely showed out at the Rivals camp, and Rivals definitely kings you or kills you based on your performances at their camps.
February 19th, 2020 at 3:12 PM ^
Ah that explains it then. Thanks for the info.
February 19th, 2020 at 3:25 PM ^
Can't wait to see where M is ranked in pre season poll. The higher they are rated.....the more fun for me.

I've watched every one of Clarkston's games for the last 2 years - Spindler will not play OL in college. He is a really good DL (usually double/triple teamed) though. G. Dellinger could be a tackle decent OL, but wait until his brother grows a little more. Cole Dellinger will be better than Garrett.
February 19th, 2020 at 3:29 PM ^
Spindler is going to play OL here, our staff has been clear on that.
February 20th, 2020 at 9:33 AM ^
This is one that i disagree with the UM coaches then. I agree with above poster that he would be a very, very good DT.
Im not saying he would not be a solid Guard though, but i would personally play him at DT.
February 19th, 2020 at 4:17 PM ^
i was wondering when/if the services would recognize henderson. that kid jumped out on tape as one of the better prospects in the country. itll be tough to close the deal vs clemson and others but it cant hurt that hes been a priority for some time
February 19th, 2020 at 4:26 PM ^
I want to say they screwed up a bit with him? Not irreparably by any means, but I think they wanted him to play DB instead of RB at some point and it really turned him off, so he's been more open since. Either way, he's obviously a national talent and will be tough to land regardless.
February 19th, 2020 at 10:07 PM ^
Wiltfong mentioned that Henderson may actually be an osu lean right now and moved his CB from Clemson to foggy. Edwards is elite and if you can grab one of only a few elite RB’s in a class, you’re set. Edwards may be the best and it sounds like he’s as close to a lock as you can get.
I thought we would have to beat osu before we landed an elite class again, but this one is shaping up to be loaded with the kind of top end talent that osu beats us with every year. If we can play those guys with the same talent level, I like our chances.
February 19th, 2020 at 5:09 PM ^
If there's one thing I've learned about the offensive line during the Harbaugh era, guys I think will be tackles are guards, and guys I think are guards end up being tackles.
February 19th, 2020 at 2:20 PM ^
Nice to see us with a number of guys in the top 100 that have committed (2) or that we hold a crystal ball lead for after we didn't do so well in that regard in the last class. Having a strong in-state class is certainly helping there.
There's a lot of work to be done yet but hopefully McCarthy's hard work on the recruiting circuit will pay off with a top caliber class.
February 19th, 2020 at 2:37 PM ^
I sure hope so. Because as of right now that same rating service has Ohio State as their #1 recruiting class while our beloved Wolverines boast the #26 ranked recruiting class and sit behind Nebraska, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, Wisconsin and of course, Ohio State in the B1G.

February 19th, 2020 at 2:43 PM ^
It's far too early in the process for those rankings to be meaningful.
February 19th, 2020 at 2:43 PM ^
You're joking right? We have 2 commits with a 98 average, and the all have at least 6 commits.
February 19th, 2020 at 2:46 PM ^
team rankings really aren't important at this point because they're almost entirely driven by the number of commits, not their quality. with so few commits at this stage, you get sample size errors. for example, if you sorted by average point rating, michigan would be ahead of ohio state (and everyone else except georgia the current #25 team according to the methodology you're using). give it time before you complain.
February 19th, 2020 at 2:46 PM ^
but that's because we only have 2 commits. those two commits average over a 97 by their rankings. ohio has 10 commits with a 95.4 average, obviously a fine class but the big deal that we're only #21 is because of so few actual commits, not that the class is garbage.
February 19th, 2020 at 2:52 PM ^
Good point. I didnt look at the number of commits, just the overall ranking. You're right - if we keep up an average that high while landing our targets this will be one hell of good recruiting class when all is said and done.
February 19th, 2020 at 3:00 PM ^
Also keep in mind that Michigan's current average is largely unsustainable. The number 1 class last year had an average of 92.96 (Georgia). The highest average in the top ten was Alabama at 93.56. The only other team to make it above 93 was Clemson.
February 19th, 2020 at 8:16 PM ^
I don't think anyone is suggesting that we might finish the class with an average rating of 97 man.
February 19th, 2020 at 10:10 PM ^
Good thing you took a second look because maryland was 2nd best behind osu lmao, and that won't ever happen. If we average our recruits we have the best in the country with the 2 we have lol
February 19th, 2020 at 2:50 PM ^
It's February. We're going to take more than 2 kids in this class.
February 19th, 2020 at 3:07 PM ^
we can trust him, he's a doctor
February 19th, 2020 at 3:18 PM ^
not just a doctor, but a doctor that has been through the purification ritual. go ahead, ask him.
February 19th, 2020 at 3:29 PM ^
Sure but the other 23 are going to be football schollies for basketball walk-ons.
Juwan needs the space.
February 19th, 2020 at 4:56 PM ^
You can’t prove that
February 19th, 2020 at 3:11 PM ^
It's gonna be this big group of Michigan players that catch and beat OSU
February 19th, 2020 at 5:03 PM ^
That really means nothing at this point. That’s purely because of the number of commits.
if Donovan Edwards committed right now, our score would jump to 82.83. Which would immediately jump us up two spots in the big ten and 12 spots nationally. Every school ahead of us in both rankings are there solely because they have more commits so far.
February 19th, 2020 at 2:23 PM ^
All upgrades are great, and all downgrades are unimportant!
February 19th, 2020 at 2:24 PM ^
Donovan Edwards with an impressive leap up as well, JJ is pretty high up there too, not sure why he would drop 6 spots?
February 19th, 2020 at 4:43 PM ^
5 spots. And when you have only 15 players ahead of you, it’s a lot easier to be caught by 5 players and move down than it is to catch anyone and move up.
February 21st, 2020 at 2:28 PM ^
It may not even be that he did anything to drop. It could just be that other people improved and jumped him
February 19th, 2020 at 2:27 PM ^
Just remember, moving down in the rankings doesn’t mean they think less of the recruit. It just means they’ve evaluated more kids now...
February 19th, 2020 at 2:30 PM ^
Not a fan of Spindler and Dellinger being ranked so close together. Dellinger IMO is clearly not as good a prospect.
Fidone - wow!
I thought 247 may drop McCarthy more. Nice to see he only dropped to 21.
February 19th, 2020 at 2:37 PM ^
I'm not used to the offense out-talenting the defense. Could probably argue it was the case in 2019, wasn't so since maybe 2010 prior, and doesn't look to change in the next couple years.
February 19th, 2020 at 2:37 PM ^
Normal rankings gravity for pretty much everyone finishing their junior year when the previous 2021 ranking is probably nearly a year old.
Big jumps up for Edwards and Fidone. Cannot let Edwards get away to OSU. Haven’t heard much about Fidone. Maybe we need a recruiting update soon. 2021 primer/swim lanes.
cool story time: I know someone who sold a car to the McCarthy family. Said they were really nice people and they had the highest praise for Harbaugh. They really liked his approach to recruiting their son.
February 19th, 2020 at 2:39 PM ^
Are we hopeful to land Fidone? I have a hard time seeing a highly ranking TE from Iowa not going to...Iowa (or Nebraska). That'd be sweet though! Thumbs up!
February 19th, 2020 at 2:54 PM ^
He's basically from Nebraska (Council Bluffs, IA is a suburb of Omaha, NE). Grew up a Nebraska fan. I think their lack of TE use under Frost and the general shittiness of their program right now has made him somewhat open. They're probably still the favorites, but who knows. He's a good player.
February 19th, 2020 at 2:55 PM ^
Saw that OSU will get the final visit from Spindler...not a good sign. We need to nail down Edwards, Spindler, & Dellinger.
February 19th, 2020 at 3:04 PM ^
Main competition for Spindler is ND, not OSU, from what I know. I'd be more concerned if ND was getting the last visit.
Also, he hasn't announced a commitment date has he? How can we be sure who gets last visit when there's no date?
February 19th, 2020 at 4:55 PM ^
Spindler nailing down OSU official, Buckeyes could get last shot
They are saying "could" get last shot.
February 19th, 2020 at 5:14 PM ^
Ah, yeah, "could" and "will", big difference. Still think it's Michigan or ND either way. I think kid wants Michigan and Dad wants ND, but Michigan has been working on Dad.
February 19th, 2020 at 4:06 PM ^
Wow both of our commits moved down ? According to the sparty minions the recruiting services always boost uofm recruit rankings to sell subscriptions.
February 19th, 2020 at 4:32 PM ^
Haskins
Charbonnet
Corum
Edwards
That’s that shit I do like
February 19th, 2020 at 6:21 PM ^
Great looking class of Michigan high school rankings, with 5 in the top 125 nationally.
Stats gurus, how does this class compare?
