2025 5-star QB George MacIntyre wearing M swag

Submitted by Dennis on April 10th, 2023 at 12:10 PM

Saw a tweet with 2025 5-star QB recruit George MacIntyre wearing the maize and blue during a workout.

He's from Nashville and the Vols are recruiting him heavily. He has an unofficial visit to the good guys on April 1st.

Was he wearing the block M just to wear it or is Michigan high on his list? Time will tell.

It would be sick to get a pipeline of 5-star gunners under center.

Would be a nice pick-up. For someone who is not super plugged-in and doesn't follow recruiting too closely, how are we looking for Underwood? Also, in briefly looking at the rankings while avoiding work, it looks like the #1 ranked player per 247 is an OT from Davis' high school. Do we have any ins with him?

I wouldn’t get my hopes up with Underwood. He’ll be a major national recruitment with all of the big NIL players after him. Michigan will do their best but he’ll have options that can match and exceed what he’ll get at UM. Back to back 5* QBs in an offense that doesn’t feature the pass is a tall task. Doesn’t mean there’s a 0% chance here, just temper your expectations.

Michigan IS recruiting Davis’ OL teammate, David Sanders. But… so is everyone. I’m sure Davis is working on him a bit, but it’s a long way away for the 2025 class. You’ll be getting all the heavy hitters in on that recruitment and they’ll be throwing everything they can put there.

Sam Webb has made it pretty clear that getting Davis would lessen our chances with Underwood, but he thinks some of the other 2025 QBs we've been recruiting wouldn't be affected by Davis being in the the 2024 class

Another thing to note with David Sanders is that we were the first team to ever offer him. So hopefully the combo of being first to offer, Jadyn Davis committing, and Sherrone Moore's coaching is enough to get him here

EJ thinks UM has a strong chance (no impact) in regards to Underwood committing after Davis. Webb thinks UM has a very low chance now getting Underwood’s pledge. Underwood and his dad connected with Kirk and love him but it’s still a tall task it seems. I think Webb has been more in the know with recruits as of late.

The same goes for 5-star WR's.  I sure hope JJ being in his second year + what should be a pretty dominant defense + a pretty favorable schedule = we throw the ball downfield more.  Would love more in-game passing reps to be part of JJ's development heading into The Game and hopefully the playoffs.

Good news?

I was disappointed to hear via Sam Webb on the latest 247 podcast that the addition of Davis may have a detrimental affect on our ability to land Bryce Underwood**, at least maybe more so than several of the other 5-star QBs we are also pursuing in the 2025 class.

It was also made clear in the podcast that the new QB coach is a hit with recruits and that M is broadening its recruiting net -- not only to cover it's bases in terms of a 2025 QB but also to build relationships if/when these kids hit the transfer portal down the line.

** Sam is clearly a Michigan homer but he made it sound like Underwood-to-M was looking REALLY good before the Davis commit but has "slowed" afterward.

but also to build relationships if/when these kids hit the transfer portal down the line.

I think that’s a very underrated aspect of the portal that many fans haven’t considered. It’s now even more important for coaches to remain in contact with recruits after they’ve committed to another school. Still check in on that kid that committed elsewhere even though you already replaced him in your class.

To be fair, Michigan didn’t use the target 1 QB plan in the 2023 class. Multiple QBs have had offers, multiple QBs have made visits, and Michigan was still reaching out to new guys as recently as February.

Jadyn Davis cemented himself as target #1 and the recruitment went very well for such a long period of time, that we didn’t hear about many guys past him. But Raiola was reached out to when he decommitted from OSU. Michael Van Buren was another guy we were in on for quite a while and kept in contact with. Michigan even reached out to Georgia’s QB commit a few weeks before Davis committed.

I disagree.  Despite a few other offers, the QB board was pretty much "just Davis" until he delayed his commitment yet again* due to the QB coaching change.

Most of the non-Davis interest in 2023s came after that coaching change.  Once  we had the change it became clear that M was going to court a LOT of QBs even if Davis did eventually verbal.  Yes -Harbaugh and Co. did swing by to see Raiola after he decommitted from OSU but that seemed to be an attempted message to Davis.  IIRC there wasn't any heavy pushing before the coaching change -- at least that is what it seemed  to those of us without paid subscriptions.

* Not dogging on Davis for the delays - more that M needed to be more proactive IF a late OSU push etc. had made an impact.

That’s not true at all though. Michigan was recruiting CJ Carr early, and there are articles where Van Buren mentions being recruited by Weiss.

Julian Sayin has an offer from March ‘22, Raiola in March ‘22, Elijah Brown in March ‘22, MVB in October ‘21, Puglisi in January ‘23 (before Weiss was fired), Michael Hawkins in January ‘22, and Belfort in May ‘22. That’s over double the total offers sent out in the ‘23 class and thats without including CJ Carr and Davis’s offers.

Now some of that interest wasn’t reciprocated, and Michigan moved on. Once things with Davis took off, Michigan trimmed the list. But the board has never really been “just Davis.” He’s simply been the clear cut #1 option with Michigan as his longtime leader, so public courtship of guys like MVB wasn’t as prevalent. Doesn’t mean it didn’t exist.

Michigan’s single season passing TDs record is 25. Yards is 3,331 yards. Michigan has had three QBs EVER pass for 3,000+ yards.

It’s about more than going to the playoffs. Top QBs typically want to play in an offense that is going to feature their talents. You’re not going to get a string high ranked QBs that are willing to sit on the bench for a couple years just to throw for 2,500 yards and 20 TDs when they finally get their shot.

The schools that DO string together back to back classes with high ranked QBs, are the schools that have a track record of their QBs putting up big numbers and going pro.

I think JJ going early in the draft (if it happens) will help as much or more than M upping its passing numbers.

Both of your points are true though, which is why OSU, USC-OU under Riley, and the new-style 'Bama are doing better with QBs than M ...or even UGA at the moment.

If getting Davis means we lose out on Underwood I have no problems with that. We needed a QB prospect in 2023. We REALLY needed a QB in the 24 class. Let's be honest here, there's no one behind JJ. Underwood is seemingly going to be a strong option to start wherever he ends up day 1, and that could mean the person he beats out transfers. This isn't a bad problem to have, but it is tough.

It will continue getting crazier, too. The combination of more advanced nutritional knowledge (in general), as well as workout regimens, kids training earlier in their "careers," emphasis on becoming stronger athletes (rather than just working on position-specific skills,) and a continuing trend toward "positionless" (or at least hybrid) skillets (rather than "you look like an X, so you're an X) will see some wild athletic freaks handling the football on a more regular basis.

I don't know if I buy that QBs are getting bigger. Some guys who used to play QB are playing TE now.

If you go back to 2004 (Chad Henne's year), for example, the sizes of some of the QBs were:

1. Rhett Bomar 6'4" 205
2. Anthony Morelli 6'4" 208
3. Chad Henne 6'3" 210
4. Stephen McGee 6'3" 205
8. Nathan Longshore 6'5" 226
11. Erik Ainge 6'6" 200
13. Sean Lewis 6'7" 220
16. Gary Rogers 6'5" 215
17. Chris Crane 6'5" 220

Since mobility is valued more these days, smaller guys are ranked higher and some have pushed those pocket QBs out of the way.

Whichever QB that was born to beat Ohio State is the one I want.  If there is a QB wearing "Fuck Ohio" swag, they should be at the top of our board.

recruits visit Michigan. recruits get swag on visit. recruits seen later wearing swag during a practice.

this is a nothingburger … a brown jug burger if you will.

for which the NCAA will get mad that we don’t apologize for having a recruit wearing our swag (probably)

Wearing UM gear is nice, but doesn't mean much.

As Col. Potter once said, "I once saw a picture of Calvin Coolidge wearing an Indian head dress, but didn't make him an Indian."

Seems that if you can get a talent like Davis, you take him and don’t worry about the impact on other recruits.  People worried how taking Moore would impact our chances with Carr, and neither one showed up in the end.  Manning did not let Ewers presence at Texas cause him to go elsewhere. Be happy with the bird in the hand.

It looks like moving from Weiss to Kirk Campbell has massively improved our opportunities with top QBs. In the last month, we've had (multiple) visits from the top 3 2025 QBs, MacIntyre, Cutter Boley and Underwood (as many have pointed out).

Boley has visited Michigan 4 times.

As has been said, this is a year away, but it's clear that Michigan is in the conversation for all 3. Any one has a chance to be a superb player at Michigan, as a followup to Davis or insurance in case he doesn't make it for whatever reason.

IMO, this is what top program recruiting looks like this far out.

The only downside is that with today's portal and NIL, it's almost impossible to string high blue chip QBs in back-to-back classes and expect both of them to stick around. And this goes for every school out there. Perfect example - whoever loses the QB battle at OSU for the starting spot will be transferring out - GUARANTEED - no matter what Buckeye fans think and say
