Serious question: is a meniscus tear something that heals enough to have a football life?
September 16th, 2022 at 9:46 AM ^
Yes. He’ll be fine with surgery and rehab
September 16th, 2022 at 9:48 AM ^
Pretty sure that it is arthroscopic surgery followed by a couple of months of rehab. Shouldn't impact his Michigan career.

I tore my meniscus a couple of years ago. It was simple arthoscopic procedure to fix it and then a month where I couldn't run. I bet he could be back playing football in a couple of months.

Though any injury can have an impact. A Meniscus tear is not as severe as an ACL.

Had my meniscus worn out, scoped out, PT for 6 weeks and my knee is better than ever and I am in the old man crowd. No injury is fun, but this will be ok.
The important part is if they are able to 'sew' the meniscus back together to allow it to self heal.
Unfortunately, my son just tore his ACL and meniscus and will have surgery on Monday so I got the latest details on the procedure yesterday.

ACL injuries suck, but the procedure and recovery time has gotten so much better. Sorry to hear that about your son's injury. Best of wishes for a speedy recovery to him and your family!

Thank you, we were fortunate to get in with a great Dr. (it helps to have a Dr. in the family).
4 months recovery time, unbelievable. It helps that he is 15 in the sense that he can and will recover quickly...

I tore my meniscus playing hockey on April 27th and I can barely walk still.
September 16th, 2022 at 11:20 AM ^
Well that’s just because you’re a pussy.
/heavy, heavy sarcasm. Sorry; I let the intrusive thoughts win. Best of luck with your recovery.
September 16th, 2022 at 12:43 PM ^
I laughed. But I'm a mediocre human in most ways.
[also sorry about your knee - here's to a safe rehab]
September 16th, 2022 at 11:32 AM ^
did you get it fixed yet? if not, that might be the problem.
September 16th, 2022 at 11:57 AM ^
As with anything, there a varying degrees of severity and prognosis. Meniscus tears are graded and a grade III could result in less optimistic outcomes - especially bc there’s usually some other structural damage i.e. ligament involvement. That said, the majority of meniscus injury’s don’t carry a life sentence but it certainly can.

He'll probably be fine. His rehab time will depend on location and approach. If they do a repair the recovery time will be much longer than if they just cut out the piece. Full repair instead of cutting the section can depend on location because of blood flow in the location.

I am not a doctor but having had a meniscus tear, it shouldn't be a big deal. I would expect a full and fast recovery.
September 16th, 2022 at 10:00 AM ^
Meniscus tears are pretty easily fixed. Key will be how much it weakens the tissue overall, since usually its just a "clean up".. For most, they do arthroscopic and you walk out (as I did), though rehab is important, especially for muscles around the area. not the biggest deal. He'll probably play again this season, unless they go ultraconservative and keep him out to avoid damage to his college career. Depends on the severity i suppose.
For as brilliant as human design is, in so many ways, fucking knees and back are a complete shit show. I'm living proof.
September 16th, 2022 at 10:23 AM ^
Yeah, if there is an intelligent designer, there are a few things that should be improved in Human 2.0 (or we could just let Elon Musk do it!) (Sorry if anyone views this as sacrilege.)
September 16th, 2022 at 8:02 PM ^
Sacrilege, nah... But I suspect he'd spend a couple billion dollars inventing something like a mind controlled multiple degree of freedom grasping mechanism and a few folks would be gaga about it before they realized they already have functional arms.
September 17th, 2022 at 9:49 AM ^
Elon Musk would certainly add one new feature that would make things interesting.
Spontaneous combustion!

Hopefully he gets the repair not the "snip." The snip is a much quicker rehab but can contribute to more knee problems down the road. The repair is a longer rehab though. Meniscus tears have been reeking havoc in the NBA the last year with some players having multi-year injuries that are quite young.

i tore my meniscus at 16 playing hockey and didn't get it looked at till I was in my 30's. they just cleaned out the knee arthroscopically and said "ehh not much else we can do now because of the degeneration"
I was fine and better than ever 4 weeks later on 1/2 a meniscus. not looking forward to the arthritis (which already affects my AC joint in my shoulder from football) and potential knee replacement in my 50s-60s though.
September 16th, 2022 at 2:11 PM ^
I had knee chondroplasty after dislocating my kneecap the 2nd time after college. Fucking brutal. I'm 30 and my knee aches like an 70 year old.
Worst part was the surgeon thought I tore my meniscus originally so when I went in for surgery I was thinking I'd walk out of there, do some rehab, and play pick up basketball again. Woke up in a full length knee brace, went through 3 months of PT that didn't get me anywhere close back to normal, and just generally it was a complete disaster.

Orthopedic technology, surgical techniques, and whatnot have improved so much in the last 20 years or so. Hopefully, just a minor speed bump for him.
September 16th, 2022 at 4:11 PM ^
Whatnot has not improved over the last 20 years. It’s still as lazy as ever 🤣🤣🤣

Dude hasn't play other than a few games this year in the past few years. This is not the kid that can afford to miss another season.
September 16th, 2022 at 1:51 PM ^
I tore mine 3 years ago, and my doctor said that if I had come in a year earlier, he would have offered me surgery. However, new research showed simple physical therapy did just as well as surgery and PT. He was right; PT did the job. Of course, I'm sure the severity of the tear makes a difference.

Not good news, but better news than when I read it as DEcommit, thinking it was a farewell post, rather than DE commit.
September 16th, 2022 at 3:03 PM ^
Good luck to him and a quick recovery.
September 16th, 2022 at 3:17 PM ^
Bummer. If I recall correctly, he has only played a year or two of football. Would have been nice to get a full season under his belt.
September 16th, 2022 at 6:52 PM ^
Rather there be no injury, but based on what I’m reading on this board from far more learned folks, it sounds like it’s not serious or threatening to his collegiate career.
Really excited to see this young man get on campus. With all that physical potential, he looks like he could be another Ojabo. And that should make any future OSU QB quiver in their boots.
