Had my meniscus worn out, scoped out, PT for 6 weeks and my knee is better than ever and I am in the old man crowd.  No injury is fun, but this will be ok.

The important part is if they are able to 'sew' the meniscus back together to allow it to self heal.

Unfortunately, my son just tore his ACL and meniscus and will have surgery on Monday so I got the latest details on the procedure yesterday.

As with anything, there a varying degrees of severity and prognosis. Meniscus tears are graded and a grade III could result in less optimistic outcomes - especially bc there’s usually some other structural damage i.e. ligament involvement. That said, the majority of meniscus injury’s don’t carry a life sentence but it certainly can.

Meniscus tears are pretty easily fixed. Key will be how much it weakens the tissue overall, since usually its just a "clean up"..  For most, they do arthroscopic and you walk out (as I did), though rehab is important, especially for muscles around the area. not the biggest deal. He'll probably play again this season, unless they go ultraconservative and keep him out to avoid damage to his college career. Depends on the severity i suppose.

For as brilliant as human design is, in so many ways, fucking knees and back are a complete shit show. I'm living proof.

Hopefully he gets the repair not the "snip." The snip is a much quicker rehab but can contribute to more knee problems down the road. The repair is a longer rehab though. Meniscus tears have been reeking havoc in the NBA the last year with some players having multi-year injuries that are quite young.

i tore my meniscus at 16 playing hockey and didn't get it looked at till I was in my 30's. they just cleaned out the knee arthroscopically and said "ehh not much else we can do now because of the degeneration"

I was fine and better than ever 4 weeks later on 1/2 a meniscus. not looking forward to the arthritis (which already affects my AC joint in my shoulder from football) and potential knee replacement in my 50s-60s though.

I had knee chondroplasty after dislocating my kneecap the 2nd time after college. Fucking brutal. I'm 30 and my knee aches like an 70 year old.

Worst part was the surgeon thought I tore my meniscus originally so when I went in for surgery I was thinking I'd walk out of there, do some rehab, and play pick up basketball again. Woke up in a full length knee brace, went through 3 months of PT that didn't get me anywhere close back to normal, and just generally it was a complete disaster.

I tore mine 3 years ago, and my doctor said that if I had come in a year earlier, he would have offered me surgery. However, new research showed simple physical therapy did just as well as surgery and PT. He was right; PT did the job. Of course, I'm sure the severity of the tear makes a difference.

Rather there be no injury, but based on what I’m reading on this board from far more learned folks, it sounds like it’s not serious or threatening to his collegiate career.

Really excited to see this young man get on campus. With all that physical potential, he looks like he could be another Ojabo. And that should make any future OSU QB quiver in their boots.
