1989 Michigan vs Virginia in Elite 8
I couldn’t find a copy of the Michigan / Virginia Elite 8 game from 1989 on YouTube, so I uploaded my old VHS copy this evening. Quality isn’t the greatest but it’s better than nothing.
watched it in the East Quad lounge - a real beating
East Quad, Best Quad.
Just gave your video its first upvote, quality looks pretty darn good for a 30-year old vhs video
If you have time for nothing else, watch the part of the second half (not sure exactly where) when Higgins was raining 3-pointers. It's crazy.
The perfect game. Watch the game and you'll understand why I say that
What a PLEASURE to see this again.
Flow of a basketball game is a beautiful thing, rarely seen today.
I recently re-watched the 1989 Sweet 16 game against UNC and was amazed by the pace. Like night and day compared to today’s games.
That's amazing considering they have shortened the shot clock.
Yes, I was in Staples for that one.
A total Blast.
Post a comment ppudge so we can upvote this. Good work, thank you!
Thanks Wolverdirt!
Upvoting everything you post today. This footage is glorious.
Bryant Stith and John Crotty...
Now there are two names I haven't heard in a looong time.
Nicely done, OP!
These are good memories of an incredible run.
Sport can be bigger than life for fans and athletes. This is one of my most cherished weekends.
Thank you for taking the time to put this up.
Go Blue!
It's amazing to see the mid-range game. That's not nearly as prominent these days.
I believe they said that Michigan averaged 92 points per game...which is insane.
My first thought as well. Shot charts don't look like that anymore.
the part I remember most from that game was when Glen Rice was leaning over with his hands on his knees during stoppage and that punk bitch Bryant Stith walked by and "accidentally" hit him in the face with his elbow. They had to be separated and Rice lit those fuckers up accordingly. Not a smart move by the freshman Stith.
Who won?
Drove down to KY to watch us beat UNC and UVa. Great road trip.
Same here. Couldn't stand all the ACC chants Friday night, so it was nice to light up the entire conference that weekend.
Thank you!! That team had 9 guys who played in the NBA. 41 was pretty good.
I got seven if you count redshirts (Eric Riley). (Sorry, nine seemed high to me. I knew only four of the starters played in the NBA.)

Which team was better? 1989 or 2013. Both team were loaded with pros.
1989 was a veteran team, so that would probably give them a leg up in a H2H. Also, the 1989 team averaged 17ppg more than their opponents. The 2013 team was at 7ppg.
Either way, Glen is the best player on the court and would light up a Beilein coached team in 2013 that's not defense-oriented.
If Glen Rice was on either of Beilein's of teams that made it to the NC game, they win.
Mike Griffin: the ultimate role player.
Mark Hughes says hi.
I've spoken to Mark twice in the past month. Might be the nicest guy I've ever met.
Agree completely. Hughes and Griffin were such important components of those late-80's/1990 teams. They didn't stuff the stat sheets, but did the little things all coaches love and recognize as so important. Two of my favorite players to ever play Michigan hoops.
So not only do I have to scroll past ads for bras, “funny” videos, and intestinal supplements in order to post a comment on mobile, I also have go past the Hello posts for not only Derrick Green but Garrett Taylor, a DB who committed to M in March 2014 but decommited in October and played at PSU.
That’s one hell of an algorithm that shows me posts relating to recruits who never played a down for Michigan football.
It could be worse. You're missing all the Najee links.
I uploaded the 1st and 2nd round tournament games from 1989 against Xavier and South Alabama this morning. I hope everyone enjoys the memories!
More good viewing later today!
Thanks, ppudge.
Awesome, thanks.
It seems crazy that Xavier was a 14-seed. They had two guys that played multiple years in the NBA, Tyrone Hill and this guy:

Sean Higgins just interviewed on WTKA
Said Crotty told him he was overrated in the elevator before the game.... that extra motivation put the Hoos in deeper trouble.
My best man is a huge UVa hoops fan. I texted him the story about Higgins and he said he still hurts from that game and said yes that's "why we lost by a million points". Thought Carsen Edwards was Higgins/Rice reincarnated lol.
Great sport though. We agreed to travel across the country to the Seattle Kingdom for the Final 4 regardless of which team won that game, and he kept his word and rooted for UM. Better man than me...and why I'm rooting for UVa to win it all.
So many long twos. And Glen Rice -- what an unbelievable shooter.
I was at that game..Drove down from Boston where I was stationed..Long Drive..Lexington I believe it was ..my memories are fading but what I do remember was that it was one of the most WONDEROUS EXCITING NCAA tournament game I remember and Ive see alot ...EVERYTHING Michigan shot went in and it was a rout early on..no nailbiter in this one..
Drove down to Rupp from Ann Arbor with friends. It was spring of my senior year.
I can't recall being at a game where a team was so dominating. Vivid memories of Higgins raining threes on the 'Hoos. Wow!
For me, it was sweet justice. I got rejected at UVA, which was my first choice.
