'17-'18 Depth Chart: Version 6 ("No MGoBlue.com Roster Edition")
Notes:
- HORRAY for a general "consensus" from the insiders and folks with spring/fall football updates
- REMEMBER - just because a guy is listed as a redshirt doesn't mean he won't play. Brian wrote something in the spring about "unburned redshirts." (IMO Stueber, Filiaga, Hudson, Anthony, and St.-Juste all fit this description).
- I will try and go back and update this throughout the year to keep it as current as possible.

I would expect Anthony to RS over Singleton and Steuber to RS over Filiaga based on reports so far.
August 19th, 2017 at 10:20 AM ^
All 4 are play some and hold on to their RS prospects...I'm not concerned about it.
You'd have to guess how games are actually going to unfold where they can get in and get some PT. I do agree on Anthony though, switched.

i'm not following you on this. If you play a single down your RS is gone unless you qualify for a medical RS.
I see you list both McKeon and Eubanks as RS freshmen. I've seen suggestions that both will be granted medical RS but never any mention of what the injury was supposed to be. Given the NCAA's treatment of Jeremy Clark, I'm doubtful.

Are medical RS granted without question unless a player is seeking a 6th year?

Paye should be on the 2 line with Vilain at End while Jeter should be 3rd at 3T and 3rd at Anchor
August 19th, 2017 at 10:13 AM ^
Recent comments have had Kemp as the backup SDE and Jeter playing both end spots.
If you've got some comments from some insiders or some news, please feel free to share - that's what this is for. But it sounds like it's personal opinion at the moment.
August 19th, 2017 at 11:32 AM ^
Yeah Kemp behind Gary at Anchor
Matty has said that Vilain and Paye are both repping with the 2's and each look really good (he was surprised that Paye came in as ready as he is), and that Jeter is up to 295 and has moved inside from Anchor to 3T (but I am assuming could still play Anchor).

I've had Jeter at SDE and DT all fall and summer.
I agree with you all.
But then the camp reports came out and said he was working at both DE spots. I'm going off the insider reports - that's all.
Go back and check old depth charts...Jeter was always DT and SDE.
My thought is since he's already close to Charlton's weight, maybe they're okay with letting him get snaps at WDE since he's not going to get as many at SDE.

August 19th, 2017 at 10:07 AM ^
I know Nate Johnson's been involved...I'd love to see Kareem Walker and Oliver Martin in those areas, but who knows.
August 19th, 2017 at 10:42 AM ^
I think you should include PR and KR in your next depth chart. Just something extra that's also interesting
August 19th, 2017 at 11:42 AM ^
thatd be nice...make more sense than hybrid RB / slot
August 19th, 2017 at 3:24 PM ^
I agree, but there's literally no information - it would be 100% pure speculation versus insider rumblings and camp news speculation.
I could say right now:
KR:
Kareem Walker
Oliver Martin
O'Maury Samuels
Ambry Thomas
Ty Issac
PR:
Donovan Peoples-Jones
David Long
Oliver Martin
...that is literally based off of the top names that pop in my head. I couldn't tell you if one of those guys other than David Long has been in mix.
As for the hybrid RB/Slot - that was really to get Peppers shown on offense and I just never took it away. I'll remove it next time since it's not interesting.
August 19th, 2017 at 11:44 AM ^
This is so important, especially PR. Jabrill had an incredible amount of hidden yardage from his PR duties. He caught everything and rarely let anything get past him to roll down the field. Returning punts is one of the hardest things to do on a football field, so it is critical to get someone back there that can catch everything and preserve the field position advantage.
August 19th, 2017 at 4:53 PM ^
August 19th, 2017 at 6:10 PM ^
Agreed. Not likely it's a RB like Walker. More likely a slot guy or a guy like DPJ who has unreal athleticism with a good first step.
August 19th, 2017 at 10:06 AM ^
- What is going on at the SLOT position?
- How much is Onwenu getting pushed or has he re-established himself?
- How close is Runyan Jr. to JBB?
- What position are the backup LBs actually playing?
- Who is on KR and PR?
August 19th, 2017 at 10:12 AM ^
I would guess that Perry holds on to slot, and DPJ and Martin become the 4th and 5th receivers and can play inside or outside (especially Martin).
August 19th, 2017 at 10:14 AM ^
Sorry, I meant behind Perry where I have 50 million /'s separating players.
August 19th, 2017 at 10:40 AM ^
August 19th, 2017 at 11:34 AM ^
I do think they will use DPJ in the slot some this year to hold safeties. If a safety has to cover him, it makes for a really fun matchup with Black or Crawford 1 on 1 outside...or DPJ is now loose in the middle of the field.

I know Washington was impressive in the spring game, but recent reports have WATSON pushing for a starting job, not Washington.
Thomas was talked up big time by Harbaugh.
August 19th, 2017 at 10:38 AM ^
I read the same thing, but I also read another report (can't remember where) that had Long, Hill, AT, Washington as the top 4 and Watson a smidge behind.
So, really behind Long and Hill nobody knows for sure.
August 19th, 2017 at 10:41 AM ^
August 19th, 2017 at 10:43 AM ^
Thomas is better in the long run, but he needs to add more strength to be reliable at the moment. I think Washington is battling Hill for the other CB spot
August 19th, 2017 at 11:28 AM ^
there were a few guys who jusy stood out as being + athletes and Ambry was one of them (along with DPJ).
He just gliiides....
August 19th, 2017 at 11:51 AM ^
Sam was raving about Ambyr's athleticism all last year while he was being recruited and said Michigan had him very very high on their board. So, this is not surprising to hear. Not sure what his coverage skills are like at this point, but even though he may be slight of build right now, his tackling can't be any worse than Strib's was.
I also wouldn't sleep on BSJ - I base this on nothing other than seeing him play in the spring game. While he got beat a few times, he physically looked the part already. I think he is going to be very good down the road.
August 19th, 2017 at 3:14 PM ^
August 19th, 2017 at 3:29 PM ^
What are you talking about?
MGoBlue.com (which I know isn't going to be OFFICIAL) lists Ambry Thomas at 6'0, 170 lbs, and Keith Washington at 6'2, 170 lbs.
My point is even if Washington is closer to 6'1, 170 and Thomas is closer to 5'10, 165...they're not a huge difference between the two of them.
August 19th, 2017 at 12:03 PM ^
From what I have heard, the current depth chart at Corner would be all slash marks between Long/Hill/Watson/Washington/Thomas, but I have heard that Hill has stepped up in the last week. I would guess top 3 end up as Long, Hill and Washington. I'd guess that Long and Hill start and the Hill bumps inside when Washington comes in. I'd guess that Washington spells Long and Watson, Hill in 2 CB sets. Thomas will be number 5 just because of his strength development, but he is so talented. Just needs bulk.
August 19th, 2017 at 10:20 AM ^
REMEMBER - just because a guy is listed as a redshirt doesn't mean he won't play. Brian wrote something in the spring about "unburned redshirts."
How well we remember. We've had games in the last several years where the conflagration could be seen for miles.
I was wondering where the roster posts were, so thanks for kicking them off for this season.
August 19th, 2017 at 10:23 AM ^
If you have co-#1s, should Ty Isaac then be #3?
No redshirts for any of the WRs/Slot, Steuber, Paye, Jordan Anthony etc?
August 19th, 2017 at 3:30 PM ^
Yes.
Nice catch.
I had to move Higdon off the #2 line up to #1 and didn't drop Isaac.

I thought Wangler was moved to Fullback.
August 19th, 2017 at 3:33 PM ^
First I've heard of it, but doesn't mean it's not true...I made a comment earlier about the backup LBs. I have no idea what's going on beyond McCray, Bush, Hudson, and Furbush.
