Toilet seats and Kansas University

Full disclosure: I am not a native Kansan, but I have lived in Kansas for more than thirty years, and for much of that time I have followed and cheered for area sports teams.

Some time ago, I had occasion to be in the home improvement section of the local Walmart.  As I shopped, I glanced up and saw a sign that told me I was approaching the “toliet seat” section.  I was amused and walked on.  But a few months later, I was visiting family in Oregon and went to Walmart for a needed item.  As I passed home improvement products, I glanced up and was astonished to see that there were “toliet seats” nearby.  This discovery caused a philosophical crisis of sorts in my mind.  Apparently, the directory information for Walmart stores is national in scope.  At some point, these signs were created and distributed to every single Walmart store.

I tried to comprehend the number of employees, some of them highly paid, who would have examined, approved, double-checked, and produced these signs.  Graphic designers, regional and store managers, printers, building maintenance staff.  And yet, there it hangs, proclaiming that toliet seats are available.

I was reminded of this puzzling disconnect over the weekend, when the Kansas University basketball program brought Snoop Dogg to their annual “Late Night in the Phog” event to kick off the basketball season.  Perhaps no one should have been surprised that the rapper entertained the crowd with pole dancing strippers and a “money gun” directed at the players’ bench.

I’m surrounded by Jayhawk fans every day of my life, so I’ve already begun hearing the rationalizations.  It was all in fun.  They weren’t really strippers.  And after all, the school and the coaching staff have apologized.  What more do I want?

I want to understand how so many layers of administration and highly paid managers can do such a stupid thing.  Someone in the tech department had to have the lights and sound system programmed for the event.  Surely at some point there was a rehearsal to make sure everything was ready to go.  Did no one on the facilities staff ask why poles would be used during the program?

I’m left with the realization that Kansas University has become a misspelled toilet seat sign.  Each person in a position of responsibility has become so careless or so blind that they don’t even notice the glaring impropriety as it passes over their desk to be signed and routed to the next office.  They hang up the “toliet seats” sign and wonder why people are pointing and laughing.  And this, too, is how a once-respected program, whose coaching history includes James Naismith, finds itself under investigation for (among other things) lack of institutional control.  Let Kansas fans protest all they want, and let the university file all the appeals possible; they've handed the NCAA the most damning evidence.  This single event is "Lack of Institutional Control, Exhibit A".

As a Michigan fan, I thank God for John Beilein, and I hope I never take for granted the gift of a program that polices itself, roots out problems when they arise, and strives for integrity, whether this culture results in wins or not.

i have a lot less problem with toilet seat signs than with the raunchy display, with public/tax payer money, that was put on my KU.  coincidentally, they both evoke the same end result.

the lack of wisdom and discernment is epic.

I don't have proof, but I didn't make the allegation either.  I'll just say that it's a natural assumption, since Kansas University is a state school and receives an unknown but high amount of money every year, and then since this particular event is free to the public.  Money is fungible, and all sorts of funds flow hither and yon through the regent universities.  But taxpayer money is all over it.

You know how I feel about the KU situation Ruth, but that doesn't mean I'm not sorry for the disappointment it has caused my friends and family around here.  Well, some of them deserve it, but that's not relevant to you!  Never forget that you're a known friend and trusted agent....always:)

Thanks, Kansasblue!  Like you, I'm sorry for friends' and family disappointment too, but I'm also disappointed in their sorrow.  Does that make sense?  It's hard to understand how they're responding.  One of my daughters rolled her eyes at me yesterday: "Mom's done with KU now."  Yes.  Yes, I think I am.

Part of me really wants to drive to the nearest Wal-Mart to see if this problem has been corrected.  I assume it was long ago, but posts like this remind me to never underestimate the stupidity of large organizations when it comes to fine details.

Do go!  I originally noticed it several years ago, but only this past summer I saw that the sign was still hanging there.  I'd be interested to know if it's as ubiquitous as I thought.  I'm at Walmart occasionally, but it's pretty rare that I end up in the home improvement section (more of a Home Depot person, frankly).

WalMart is one of the biggest companies, and there is nothing wrong with their research or training for newbies. But they can also teach students such as e-commerce, which will become even larger in the future. That is why https://www.allnetarticles.com/what-walmart-can-teach-students-about-e-commerce-22921/ such companies need to educate new people for the big world. The speed with adaptation, multi-trade channels, workflows, and more will be useful for young students.

Jeff Long, former UM Associate Athletic Director.  Certainly should have known better and you would hope he picked up certain values here at UM that he would carry with them, including not allowing a basketball program to cheat its butt off.  But when someone gets paid huge sums of money to either support cheating or look the other way, it's easy to do, particularly when the coach is far more powerful than the AD he nominally reports to.

Remember when we were looking at possible AD candidates and there were 2-3 with good resumes AND ties to Michigan? Warde, Jeff Long, and I feel like a third who I can’t remember right now.

Well, Jeff Long is overseeing an institution that lacks control. And while opinions on Warde are mixed, even those solidly in his corner have to admit he’s made some head scratching decisions (like the ND scheduling) without really having many active positives to balance it out, plus umbig11 mentioned recently he’s alienated a lot of donors.

Not sure about the third guy, but it’s not looking so hot for that group.

People in Kansas trying to shake their state's staid reputation and be seen as "hip" bring in an aging rapper who is trying himself to stay relevant and edgy . . . and it leads to stripper poles at Midnight Madness.
