MGoCommenting for Dummies

Submitted by Ninja Football on

The first bump of a diary post. I cosign on this general approach to tackling the site. As a forinstance: in the post about bug tracking yesterday there were a few folks posting links to SMQB and elsewhere; these should probably go on the message board now.

Okay people, so now that Brian has brought us MGoBlog 3.0 I see that many of us are confused about the difference between Diaries, and the MGoBoard, and comments, and why Ninja quite frequently wanders around pantless in public.  I thought I'd make an attempt at clarifying some of the confusion, and throwing a couple of ideas out there and seeing what sticks.

So without further ado, I give you MGoComenting for Ridiculous Idiots Who Waste Too Much Time on This Damn Site Which (Amazingly Enough) Has Not Yet Rendered Us Unemployed.

_______________

So, here we are with all these options.  Brian Cook, or the MGoMafiaDon as he may be called, has given us an updated site with options galore. What's a kinda sane person with an unhealthy obsession with all things Michigan to do?  Here's one humble man's ideas:

  1. DIARIES:  This is your own little area of MGoBlog.  It gives you the ability to have your own tangential mini-blog, your own little cubby hole in the MGoUniverse to do with what you will.  Want a spot to to display your photoshopped pictures of Charlie Weis making love to a chocolate cake?  Go for it.  Want a gallery of your favorite in-game pics?  Here you go.  A list of the recruits you'd most like to see us sign?  That can go here too.  Personally, I'll be using it as a place to list where Kate Beckinsale and I will register for wedding gifts when she finally  leaves her husband and decides to become Ninja's sugar-momma.  In related news, people can comment on your diary entries much like we can coment on Brian's posts. So feel free to tear down one man's dream of having a beatiful, intelligent woman support his MGoHabit at the bottom of this one.  And I hope you feel good about yourself when I'm crying myslelf to sleep tonight.
  2. MGOBOARD:  This is the spot for discussions, basically about anything you'd like.  Think McGuffie lacks top-end speed and you'd like to get flamed for it?  This is your spot.  Interested in talking Tigers? Feel free to make a thread here.  Wondering why we don't have a DE recruited yet?  Yup, that's here too.  I'd also propose a daily open thread in this section for those crack-adled regulars who have the attention span of a ferret on crystal meth. Someone could just start it as "Open thread for July 1st, 2008", etc. first thing in the AM. And luckily for those of you who think we're all nuts, you don't have to wade through it. (And you're right btw- we're all completely bat shit insane. But in a good way.)
  3. BRIAN'S POSTS:  Obviously the reason we're all here, to get a daily and sometimes hourly fix on all things Wolverine.  As I understand it the comments section after these posts will most likely be topic based.  As Brian has said it's currently open, but the above format would give us the option to self-govern and let him do less babysitting and more digging into the important things in life, like what Mike Barwis had for breakfast today, or what Mike Barwis wore today, or when Mike Barwis will officially turn our 5'6" WRs into laser cannon toting T-Rex's with 4.3 speed and a two story vertical.

So,  what think you MGoPeople?  Like I said, I'm just throwing it out there to see what sticks.

GO BLUE,

Ninja Football

Thanks for delving into the differences and citing examples. I think there is a world where diaries and the mgoboard can coexist peacefully. It's just a matter of getting everyone to agree on their uses (and actually use them). Brian is giving his readers(/followers/lovers?) a place to communicate and share ideas. I think he was looking for a way to cut through the crap and pull out related & useful information to also include in his posts. Thanks Brian. Thanks Ninja. Thanks Barwis.

Now who wants to talk McGuffie?

Speaking of Barwis, he had his clinic this weekend and said that TWENTY-ONE NFL players are now working out with him on a regular basis. Nice to see some former players have a presence around Ann Arbor.

I just want to support you in your endeavor here, but that Kate Beckinsale talk is just craziness, unless you can get her to sign a prenup. In that case, go for it!

The insanity continues! This is perfect for you Mr. Ninja, to showcase that hilarity that you are so talented at writing!(I think the changes that Brian has instituted will help some of us from the MZone find a new home!)GO BLUE!

Catie, I thought the same regarding the displaced MZoners. A GoBoard spot might work for all the hoity toity intellectual crowd away from the plethora of dick jokes that we regulars here are so good at. And for the record, all my writing is done by my 7' Green Sasquatch imaginary friend George. I just take dictation.

Brian, the site looks great -- better than expected, in fact.

However, I think your biggest problem now is navigation and organization. For example, the three most important places on MGoBlog are now (1) the home page (your posts), (2) diaries, and (3) MGoBoard.

These should be more easy to get to; why is BlogPoll for instance ahead of MGoBoard when I'm sure the latter will get more traffic? There is also no explicit link back to the homepage (besides the banner) or to diaries. These links need to be emphasized more, perhaps as simply as making different color tabs a la the ESPN page here: http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/index

But all in all, great work. I think the community aspect will really take off.

Hey now! I was a regular over there before I turned to the Dark Side. Not their fault they're more civil than we are. Besides, this would just be more people to for us to corrupt. So be nice bitches! BGH: Wish I'd known Musket was coming down this weekend- I would've hitched a ride. Though I'm thinking a night in Mt. Adams might not be the best idea right now. On the flip side, you guys could push me down the hill and laugh as I rolled all the way to the freeway- after a few hours at Yesterdays I probably wouldn't even notice.

Keep diaries to something interesting and use the message board when you just have a dumb fan thought or a question. maybe it's me, but I think the diaries should be longer than a sentence and contain some thought. Message board posts can be anything.

Hey now, we didn't smack on you guys over here, all I ever said was: 1) This is a rough crowd 2) Not exactly female friendly I think that you all might agree with those statements! We are all True Blue!

T9, I think it's now safe to say you're absolved of you duties.  Just make an occasional MZoners Refugee thread and you'll be fine.

Speaking of which, Catie, let me know what you need to send Whets-  I should have a package going out soon.

We are plenty female friendly, as long as every post doesn't contain some sort of variation on "hey i'm a girl on the internet i have booooobs" (coughcough*00goblue00*coughcough). So I'm sure you'll be fine.

Hey Dex, thanks for the advice (?) I grew up with 6 brothers..... My boobs didn't get me very far with them, my knowledge of football did. I thought I actually had a fairly good knowledge of the game (for a girl) until I met T9......that girl.....holy cow! She can talk circles around me when it comes to the game! (Good to see you here T9!) I can still talk circles around my brothers though!) I promise to behave, and even (gasp) contribute to the discussion about football, THAT is really why I am here. Ninja, I will have to see what I can come up with and get it in the mail to you.....

Diary tags are points of reference used to catalog similar psots, not unlike an index but based on each tag as opposed to being alphabetical. For instance, one couold make a tag titled "Charlie Weis is rotund" and each diary entry regarding Charlie Weis and the fact that he's roughly the size of Australia and just as mobile would be grouped together. Or you (the blog author) could tag them "recruiting" if that's pertinent to your posts, and instead of having to sift through eleventy billion posts about whatever, I could get to a grouping of all your recruiting posts simply by clicking on the tag at the end of one of your diary entries. Make sense?

Personally, I'll be using it as a place to list where Kate Beckinsale and I will register for wedding gifts when she finally leaves her husband and decides to become Ninja's sugar-momma.

Still waiting.
