  • Recruiting Rankings

When faced with insomnia, I apparently update the recruiting rankings. Scout's (sorry, Fox Sports Next's) new layout is an absolute unnavigable travesty. As there was all of one new commitment this week, that's all I've got. Changes since the last rankings:

10-1-12: Illinois picks up Tyler White.

Chart? Chart:

Big Ten+ Recruiting Class Rankings
Rank School # Commits Rivals Avg Scout Avg 24/7 Avg ESPN Avg Avg Avg^ POINTS*

13 Minnesota 6 2.50 2.33 2.67 2.83 2.58 15.50

^The average of the average rankings of the four recruiting services (the previous four columns). The figure is calculated based on the raw numbers and then rounded, so the numbers above may not average out exactly.

*The product of number of Commits and Average Average

NOTE: Unranked recruits are counted as two-star players.

On to the full data after the jump.

To hell with Notre Dame, no reason to include them in the BIG TEN recruiting rankings.

Do we really need to have this debate every week? Not only are they a great barometer about how Michigan is recruiting in the Midwest, and not only does Michigan go up against ND for far more of the same recruits than they do most of the Big Ten, but including them gives you more information... for free. Deal with it.

I hate to agree with the above poster, but that is exactly what I thought when I opened this weeks post. By your own logic then we should include Stanford, Oregon, USC, Alabama, etc. In my humble opinion, they hold nothing more than a parallelism to the national conversation on recruiting, not a true comparative to BiG recruiting. I am far more concerned with OSU than any one else. Lastly, I work with a lot of ND, Purdue and Indiana fans and even they all agree that most of those player's ratings get way too inflated just because they are ND recruits. The same could be said for some of ours, however, I don't think it is too their normal extremes.

No. Not by his logic should we include Alabama. You people just like to bitch because you hate Notre Dame.

There are plenty of us that appreciate seeing the ND recruiting updates. Your complaints are as dumb as the people that complain about non-revenue sports threads. Just don't look at them and problem solved.

Do you know me? Where in my comment did I say I hate ND? You seem to not even understand my point or the conversation. Fair enough, but to equate ND with BiG recruiting is a non sequitur. And no offense chief but I have lived 45 minutes from south bend damn near my whole life, don't tell me about how nd some how matters to Michigan and the national college football recruiting conversation. Once Holtz and his Sabanistic ways left, he left a tarnished ND, they have been a punch line for almost 30 years. My alumni status and 30 year UofM fandom allows a certain opinion on this matter whether you like or not. Nd has no barring on these recruiting updates. Once again it's parallelism not a comparative. Understand those meanings ...

Oh and more on Ace's point...we may not play whiskey for three more years but they have a sudden and direct impact on who plays in the BIG ten championships game. They matter in who plays for the rose bowl and potential bcs or playoff game. So yeah, their recruiting ability matters waaaaayyyyyy more than an independent that will only play guaranteed games agts Purdue and msu for the next seven years.

You seem not to understand Ace's logic:

Number of times Michigan plays Notre Dame over the next two seasons: 2

Number of times Michigan plays Wisconsin over the next two seasons: 0

So nd is a regular opponent of Michigan's.  They've played every season over the last decade.

Do we really need to have this debate every week? Not only are they a great barometer about how Michigan is recruiting in the Midwest, and not only does Michigan go up against ND for far more of the same recruits than they do most of the Big Ten, but including them gives you more information... for free. Deal with it.

nd is a midwest recruiting powerhouse.  They offer many of the same kids as Michigan.  Along with osu, these are basically the power programs in our region, fighting for many of the same kids.

Alabama, Stanford, Oregon, USC, etc fulfill neither of criteria.  Perhaps osu is the primary comparator, but to say that nd is not even in the conversation strictly due to conference alignment is silly.

Who cares?  Honestly, what difference does it make?  It's not like this is an official award like "Big Ten Player of the Year" and Notre Dame players are in the running.  It's simply a reference point, and we play them every year.

If you don't like it, just ignore the Notre Dame section.  There's no point in bitching about it every week.

Frankly, if Ace wants to do a ranking of every opponent we play for the next seven years, I don't really care.  If I want the info, I can use it.  If I don't, I can scroll right past it.  You people are complaining about having too much free information.  How dare Ace!!!!!

Now if Hoke & Co's emphasis on character and their ability to evaluate it proves out, it should translate into better retention and the team will be in much better shape a few years from now, both in depth and talent development.
