Items:
- Heininger didn't get the memo that Brink was the walk-on who was supposed to start at SDE. Seriously, Hoke said point blank he would start.
- Will Campbell is back at one tech?
- Martavious Odoms is way down the depth chart.
- That horrible, horrible OR at K.
- Freshmen who made it on: Beyer, Clark, Morgan, Brown, and Countess
- Hopefully Barnum's presence means his injury isn't significant.
- Somewhat surprising that Mike Jones managed to hold on to the starting WLB job without so much as an OR. Seems like we've heard about everyone save him.
August 29th, 2011 at 12:42 PM ^
Maybe his injuries are more significant that we've been led to believe.
Also think the fact that the depth chart doesn't list a slot receiver hurts him. If he's healthy, got ot think he'll see some time as a slot when we line up that way.
I wonder how serious to take the listing of BWC at the one tech. I wonder if that's just a way to keep both QWash and him happy about their progress.
August 29th, 2011 at 12:53 PM ^
I'm guessing it means that BWC and Q are in on the D-line rotation, and their actual positions listed won't mean much; will vary situationally.
August 29th, 2011 at 12:59 PM ^
I was very surprised to see him at third string! Is it really just an injury that is holding him back? He was great fun to watch two years ago - what happened??
August 29th, 2011 at 2:10 PM ^
with all the emphasis placed on blocking, and Tay being a very good blocking WR. Injury is the only thing that makes any sense here.
August 29th, 2011 at 3:47 PM ^
Unfortunately we have a new playbook and Odoms was hurt for most of fall camp, so he probably didn't get to practice it much. That would be my guess.
August 29th, 2011 at 12:59 PM ^
But I'm guessing we'll play a fair amount of 3-wide so Odoms will get his playing time, whether it's in the slot or outside.
August 29th, 2011 at 1:10 PM ^
Chart with a 3 WR set. I think things at the WR position would make a lot more sense considering that Gallon and Grady are both slot ninjas.
August 29th, 2011 at 12:44 PM ^
do you have your safeties backwards. Kovacs is not a free safety.
August 29th, 2011 at 12:47 PM ^
Yea looking at the PDF the safeties got switched backwards.
August 29th, 2011 at 12:48 PM ^
While you are right, the difference is really irrelevant. Mallory said he wants to get to the point that the two best safeties are on the field, regardless of position, leading me to believe that their roles and responsibilities might not be all too different.
Besides, Prison Abs was a linebacker last year. He's only a touch more athletic than Kovacs.
August 29th, 2011 at 12:45 PM ^
I know we still have some time until the game but that seems like a lot of "OR" to sort out between now and game time.
Still some interesting stuff.
August 29th, 2011 at 12:49 PM ^
Only one on offense and one on D. The special teams, sure, but IIRC, QB, RB, and several O-line positions were 'OR' in the early report for last year's opener. I've blocked out my memory of last year's defense entirely, so I couldn't tell you one way or another.
Also, does this mean the rumored Hopkins suspension is fictitious?
August 29th, 2011 at 3:55 PM ^
And didn't Hoke excplicetly say that they were gonna wait till later this week to name a starter (in the press conference write up Heiko did yesterday)?
And yeah, it looks like all that Hopkins speculation was nothing.
August 29th, 2011 at 12:47 PM ^
It's so cute how they stick to the traditional positions even though we will be in 3wr sets 80% of the game.
August 29th, 2011 at 12:52 PM ^
- The OR at RB. Maybe Fitz isn't a lost cause, and we can have multiple backs for when the other guy gets hurt (you know they will).
- Repetitive, but Odoms on 3rd is shocking. As mentioned above, maybe injuries.
- All our 2nd string O-Linemen will almost assuredly see lots of minutes over the long season.
- All the Gordons on D is going to make announcing (or UFRs) fun.
- Still OR at the other CB.
- Lots of ORs in special teams. With Gallon prominent. Can the dropsies be in the past?
August 29th, 2011 at 1:01 PM ^
Have to assume this is a notational thing.
Gallon beat out Odoms for the slot position (this has been rumored for a while) but I bet Odoms plays more than Grady and is the top backup at outside WR.
August 29th, 2011 at 1:54 PM ^
I hope that Gallon can fix his dropsies and become a productive returner. I get the feeling that he is getting more coaching based on the drills I have seen them do in the practice videos. He has the ability to be electric with the ball in his hands.
August 29th, 2011 at 12:54 PM ^
Biggest surprise for me is Odoms on 3rd string. Odoms caught a sweet touchdown vs. Miss St. He lays the wood on blocks. He catches the ball. I have to wonder as well about injury stuff and I guess Gallon must have had an amazing camp.
Hard to see bright side though of a 3 year starter placed on 3rd string there.
August 29th, 2011 at 1:10 PM ^
That if there were three WR spots (as will be the case most of the time in the actual games) instead of two, it would be something like...
WR1: Hemingway -> Odoms -> J. Robinson
WR2: Roundtree -> Jackson
SR: Gallon -> Grady -> Dileo
I'm moderately excited to see where all this Gallon hype has come from. Certainly did not expect him to catch the eye pf this staff.
August 29th, 2011 at 1:35 PM ^
The upside may be that two other people are playing better. Odoms will probably still see a lot of action, but it is encouraging that others are stepping up as well.
August 29th, 2011 at 12:55 PM ^
FWIW, in John McColgan's 'Countdown to Kickoff' feature, he said Jones is the hardest LB to block.
August 29th, 2011 at 12:59 PM ^
I see no mention of Jerald Robinson at WR. Which is odd given that everyone -- coaches, media -- has repeatedly suggested that he's been quite good.
August 29th, 2011 at 1:04 PM ^
will always get more offseason hype than guys like Grady.
You heard a lot about Ricardo Miller's progress, but not much about Moore or Watson.
We heard a lot about Ryan, Morgan, Clark, but not much about Jones.
Its just makes for more interesting stories to hear about young kids progressing then veteran backups retaining their role or ascending without drama.
August 29th, 2011 at 1:16 PM ^
Where is Miller at? It seems like he would at least crack the second spot @ TE over Watson?
August 29th, 2011 at 1:57 PM ^
I feel like Miller still might be another year away from contributing. I think Watson at this point is going to be be ahead of Miller because of his size and ability to block.
August 29th, 2011 at 1:00 PM ^
Is it just me or does it seem like the guys with the most seniority won a lot of the disputed position battles? Odoms is the one exception to this that jumps out. Anyway, hopefully they are giving spots to the best guys regardless of what class they're in.
August 29th, 2011 at 1:01 PM ^
also i'm pretty sure hoke said if the season were to start today brink would be the starter. i could be wrong but i'm pretty sure thats what was said so it's possible heininger outworked him and earned the spot as camp continued on.
August 29th, 2011 at 1:08 PM ^
You split a double post?!
I didn't even know that was possible.
August 29th, 2011 at 5:17 PM ^
...that began with "if we start today" came before the Friday scrimmage. That was the final test for the two deep. Now they start this week off with full WMU prep. And of course things that happen during prep (injuries, knock on wood) could alter it further.
August 29th, 2011 at 1:02 PM ^
Maybe they're going to unleash the Odoms against ND.
August 29th, 2011 at 1:02 PM ^
I think this staff has more gamesmanship than we might give them credit for.
I had heard here and there mentions of Heiniger but nothing about starting..
Personally, i really hope the point of that whole situation was to gloss over the fact that RVB is really about 305-310 lbs.. If hes there and not the 290 on the roster I am much much happier with him inside.
Also, heinger is 6'6 so playing inside would be a challenge for him
Also, am super excited to see what Thomas Gordon has in store for us.. he was easily the most solid tackler last year behind Kovacs.
and I wouldnt be expecting our nickelback to be anyone but Carvin Johnson on shortyardage and possibly Countess on passing downs.
Am a little worried about the backend speed we have at S, but hopefully they are going to count on Avery and Woolfolk to be better than average on the corner.
August 29th, 2011 at 1:07 PM ^
Everything's that's come out so far has said Prison Abs or Woolfolk at nickelback. I wouldn't be surprised if that means they have Avery/Floyd (whichever one isn't already across from Woolfolk) take his place on nickel situations, and move him inside. Or sub in Carvin to play deep and slide Prison Abs inside.
August 29th, 2011 at 1:08 PM ^
If this was a Forcier vs. Robinson situation, where the starter changes the game plan significantly I'd see your point, but...I no opponent would adjust their gameplan because Heininger beat out Brink or Jones beat out Herron/Morgan/Evans/etc.
August 29th, 2011 at 1:19 PM ^
Will Campbell is one of the most over-hyped under-achievers to ever play for Michigan.
August 29th, 2011 at 2:06 PM ^
was one of the most over-hyped, under-achieving posts ever.
BUUUUUUUUUURRRRRRRRRNNNNNNNNNN!!
And allow me to add a preemptive 'I know you are but what am I?' to boot.
August 29th, 2011 at 3:15 PM ^
was that the part I was supposed to laugh...
August 29th, 2011 at 3:36 PM ^
By looking at the D of the previous regime, I doubt BWC has had any decent coaching. They all say Will has come a long way since the Hokeamania train arrived on campus. He's improving, just needs to work on his consistency with technique.
August 29th, 2011 at 1:08 PM ^
The thing that sticks out to me is the lack of Terrence Talbott. On the other hand, good for Blake Countess to make the 2 deep. He's going to be special.
August 30th, 2011 at 11:53 AM ^
What ever happened to 4 star Ash? Another wasted rrrrrrrod recruit?
August 29th, 2011 at 1:11 PM ^
No freshmen starters??
It's... beautiful :')
August 29th, 2011 at 1:21 PM ^
That alone is a step forward for this defense.
August 29th, 2011 at 2:06 PM ^
good point! i like it when freshmen are 3rd string/red shirt
August 29th, 2011 at 1:15 PM ^
y'all are welcome on the Mike Joooones Hype Train/Bandwagon. MJ can't stop won't stop.
August 29th, 2011 at 1:55 PM ^
WHO?
MIKE JONES!
August 29th, 2011 at 1:19 PM ^
Will Cambel makes sense at nt doesnt it?
August 29th, 2011 at 1:22 PM ^
Will Cambel makes no sense to any of us at all.
August 29th, 2011 at 1:19 PM ^
Will Cambel makes sense at nt doesnt it?
August 29th, 2011 at 1:22 PM ^
It's also curious that Talbott is missing, my guess is that whoever loses out between AVery and Flotd goes to second string with tony anderson pushed down to 3rd
August 29th, 2011 at 1:26 PM ^
Just my opinion (and I didn't see him during the Spring any other time) but Talbott looked dreadful during the Spring Game. The athleticism is there, but he has so much to work on.
August 29th, 2011 at 1:23 PM ^
This seems to be Soviet era disinformation at its finest. I have to think Bo is haunting Brady's dreams and telling him how to lock down The Fort.
