In Which We Discuss Otters, And Certainly Not Will Campbell, Who Is Not Being Discussed

By Brian — December 30th, 2008 at 11:28 AM — 24 comments

otter-woo

The William Campbell recruitment is the reason the letters W, T, and F were invented. A couple days ago, Campbell publicly eliminates (or near-eliminates) Michigan after months of foregone conclusion-hood. WTF?!?!?

Today:

Numerous sources have confirmed that Michigan is still in the picture for Campbell and will be one of the candidates for his pledge on Saturday. One source went as far as saying that he felt Campbell would certainly re-commit to Michigan, noting the big defensive tackle's sense of humor and tendency to joke around.

WTF?

Meanwhile, the inbox says this:

Friend at Miami says his sources tell him they think Will is all theirs.

Source at USC says TJ McDonald reported to the USC staff (who have been absolutely confused by Will during their recruitment of him) that Will Campbell was making up all the dropping Michigan stuff. After I relayed this to my friend at Miami he was very unconfident about the Will to Miami report, so that probably isn’t a strong rumor.

[Meanwhile:

He [Campbell] told TJ [McDonald] he was just f---ing around.

Who is this? Read on. –ed.]

Worldofx is a legitimate contact for recruiting and has consistent dialogue with USC staff and works at the USC and Rivals SoCal combines. I recommend you join the message board for his recruiting information (www.fvsports.com)

What is known is this: Will Campbell was an unofficial visitor to every Michigan home game, even though he de-committed after the Utah game. Cissoko, Gordon, and Jones are all Cass Tech team mates and there was talk during the season of Will “joining his team mates.” And that there is a Will Campbell on the winter enrollment list.

And on yesterday's WTKA recruiting roundup, Andre Barthwell of GBW said he's still going to Michigan. WTF, and hurray.

But wait. What if the failure of Campbell's hypothetically attempted ruse drives him mad with anger and he actually does pick somewhere else just to prove you can't predict what William Campbell is going to do? Arrrrgh!

Here's a picture of an otter with a beer.

otter-beer

Under no circumstances should Will Campbell be informed he is mentioned in this post, which is about otters.

otters and such

Barthwell did not say that Campbell was still going to Michigan, but that he thought that he would.

I think the concensus is that Will is a jokey joker who likes to joke and that he is playing the sites and media, but that in the end that is still no guarantee that he ends up recomitting because he could be joking.

I also think that if he is joking, great fun, but I would think that if he is going to commit to michigan again he would want to use that time to recruit for Michigan to make he future team better.

By throwing M under the bus, even in a joking manner, he could end up hurting his eventual team. Not significantly, but certainly a far cry from Newsome and McNeal talking up Michigan at a combine last summer (oh wait, that didnt work out so well).

We can't run. We can't pass. We can't stop the run. We can't stop the pass. We can't kick. Other than that, we're just not a very good football team right now. - Bruce Coslet

If memory serves me correctly

I remember back in '05, Antonio Bass called Lloyd Carr to tell him he was going to Michigan State. Of course, it was all a joke, because that's just how Antonio Bass was (is).

As far as Will Campbell goes, I find it very difficult to believe that anybody can be listed on UM's database, just because they have a loose relation with the school (IE a prospect who intends to enroll early but has not committed). Also, there is no way recruits can just enroll at multiple schools at once and then drop the ones they don't end up at without losing a year of eligibility - this rumor has been flying around among others that suggest that Campbell being listed on UM's database has nothing to do with his enrollment.

Not that I loved Lloyd less, but that I loved Michigan more.

Ah, Antonio Bass

He's such a kidder. Remember that time when he told everyone that he destroyed his knee in practice and would not be able to play during 2006 season, or possibly ever again? What a knee-slapper! And then how even the coaching staff got in on the rumor and RR told everyone that he wasn't playing anymore? LMAO! RR can be such a joker just like Pete Carroll.

Ann Arbor is a classy broad.

As to the uniqname thing: You

As to the uniqname thing:

You get a uniqname for paying your ENROLLMENT DEPOSIT ($200). This is only a deposit, until you register for classes you are not enrolled at any institution. Scholarship athletes get this deposit waived, so in effect, they lose nothing.

You tend to see a lot more of this happening with regular students. They place their deposit at U-M, and get a uniqname. Then they get second thoughts and decide that they really wanted to go somewhere else before summer orientation starts. They simply tell U-M "I'm not coming", and they will be purged from the database before classes start.

Lots of people have uniqnames. For example, anybody with an Mcard has a uniqname. This means hospital volunteers, staff janitors, groudscrew, everybody has a uniqname. This does not equal being enrolled in the university.
