2015 Quarterbacks: The Overview

Kevin Dillman (L) and Kyle Kearns (R)

The most pressing question regarding the 2015 class is which quarterback Michigan will offer next; our own Brandon Brown posted a detailed overview of the candidates on Sunday, and since we had a lot of content over the weekend I'd like to highlight it again. Here's the upshot, though you're strongly encouraged to check out the whole thing:

As the high schools seasons near and pass the midway point, evaluations are beginning to take shape and I heard Sam Webb say that he expects an offer or offers to be dealt within the next month or two to a 2015 quarterback prospect. I believe it will be to someone on this list and I’d rank these prospects as follows:

  1. Kevin Dillman
  2. Kyle Kearns
  3. Riley Neal
  4. Sheriron Jones
  5. Brady White
  6. Nick Johns
  7. Alex Malzone

I think Dillman should be priority #1 based on his film. He’s a gamer and has a toughness and a quality about him you like to see at the quarterback position.

We've reached something of an MGoConsensus in wanting Dillman to get the next offer.

There's a lot of local support for Brother Rice quarterback Alex Malzone, and while he doesn't appear to be in line for the next offer or two right now, he'll get a chance to prove himself in front of the coaches, per Scout's Allen Trieu ($):

"Coach Borges said I'm definitely on their radar and that I'm having a great year. He wants to see me throw live, so I think they're going to try to come to the Catholic League Championship Game on October 26th since it's their bye week."

Malzone was at Saturday's game and said he "loved the visit." If offered, he's probably a lock to commit. With Michigan's very limited 2015 class size, they'll take only one quarterback in the cycle—with Malzone in their backyard, the coaches can wait to offer him while evaluating all of their potential options and guaging their interest.

Well, Yeah

Rivals released an unordered list of the top ten "out of state steals" for the 2014 class, and the obvious choice is obvious:

DB Jabrill Peppers, Paramus (N.J.) Paramus Catholic
Peppers is the type of player that can fill that Charles Woodson/Patrick Peterson role for Michigan. It was very impressive that the Wolverines' staff was able to go out to the East Coast, away from their traditional recruiting grounds, and grab one of the top players in the country. In addition to his abilities on the field, Peppers' character and leadership attributes are something that coach Brady Hoke and company really like.

Damon Webb also makes the list; if you feel sad about that at all, look up.

Speaking of Peppers, he's at #3 in the latest 2014 Top247. Michigan's commits all stayed in essentially the same place; you can see the full rundown at Touch The Banner.

Commit Stat Roundup: Harris, Crawford Star Again

Damien Harris hitting the open field, a common sight this year (photo via)

You'll never believe this, but Damien Harris playing against a winless team is a receipe for ... actually, a pretty normal Damien Harris stat line:

On offense, junior tailback Damien Harris had another big game, rushing 28 times for 274 yards and four touchdowns.

Once again, however, Harris was outdone by 2015 CB commit Shaun Crawford, who did a little bit of everything for St. Edward in a 41-14 win over Cardinal Mooney:

Crawford had seven carries for 184 yards and two touchdowns, intercepted a pass on defense and returned a punt 51 yards to set up another score. But his 73-yard sprint through the Mooney defense set the tone for another big night for the Eagles, who had 483 yards of total offense.

That 73-yard TD run came on the first play from scrimmage; that'll help a guy average 26 yards per carry.

While his numbers weren't as stellar, 2014 QB Wilton Speight gets credit for finding the bright side after a 24-14 loss to Woodberry Forest:

Speight, an explosive passer who has committed to the University of Michigan, completed 28 of 68 passes for 289 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. While he might have earned more yards in the air than Stone, he struggled throughout the afternoon as the Tigers kept up an intense pressure that frequently forced him to throw early and that caught him in the backfield for three sacks.

Maintaining all four limbs is always a positive.

Moe Ways hauled in three catches for 49 yards and scored on a 19-yard run; Tim Sullivan came away impressed with another aspect of his play in a 63-6 victory for Country Day ($):

He showed solid route running, good hands, and perhaps most importantly, no frustration when the ball didn't head his way. He was not just a capable blocker, but went the extra mile to take pride in his blocking in the run game. He has developed physically and should be a devastating player on the edge at the college level.

Bryan Mone recorded two TFLs among his six solo tackles in a losing effort for Highland. While his team suffered a loss, Mone earned a major individual accolade, receiving an invitation to the Under Armour All-American Game.

George Campbell caught just one pass for 14 yards, comprising half of East Lake's receptions in a 51-13 win over Seminole; despite his team sticking to the ground offensively, he still managed to make a major impact, returning a kickoff 61 yards for a touchdown.

I can't find stats for Noah Furbush, but a YouTube user uploaded a few videos of him making big plays in Kenton's 52-16 triumph over Wapakoneta, including him reading play-action and coming away with a sack:

There are also clips of a nice TFL after chasing down the play from the backside and a hit on the quarterback to ensure he couldn't recover a bad snap.

Etc.

Michael Ferns sat out St. Clairsville's victory this weekend with a shoulder injury; you can see highlights of his first six games of the season on Hudl.

2015 Northville OL David Moorman has been on the radar as a potential offer recipient; for now, the coaches are waiting on the current offered linemen, per Trieu ($):

"Michigan stopped by last week Monday and Tuesday was Michigan State. I know Michigan is only taking two offensive linemen, so that's tough, but they have said that if anything happens with the guys they've offered, I'm one of the next to get offered.["]

The latest 1st and 17 is an emotional one as Da'Shawn Hand and his Woodbridge teammates deal with the loss of one of their own.

By bringing up David Moorman, you've just helped me pinpoint exactly what the problem is with Michigan's interior offensive line this year (and last year): Not enough guys named Dave!

Hopefully David Dawson will step up and fix this problem next year, and maybe this David Moorman fellow can help in the same regard a little down the line.

As a Northville grad (25 years ago). It would be great to see a Mustang play for the Wolverines. Bo visited to recruit our kicker when I was there. He found out the guy smoked and left abruptly. I don't think there has been a Northville player at UM since Ernie Bach (class of 1984?). He was a special teamer and my hero.

How do we know that Malzone is not the next in line or two to get offered?  Brandon did a nice job on the QB update, but his rankings are just a guess.  Even last year we had no idea Wilton would be first offered until right beforehand.  Only Al knows at this point and the rest is just conjecture.

Not to lash out at you but one of my ongoing pet peeves here is people reading more in to comments than what is there. It was clearly stated that the mgobloggerati would like him to be next to be offered...not that he would be.

The basis of this site is opinion and conjecture so just sit back and enjoy it and take it for what it's worth...an educated group of writers giving us their thoughts on issues related to Michigan sports.

No, we knew Speight was one of the final three vying for the offer, it was just a surprise it was him over Cornwall. But we knew he was one of the top 3 guys, and Brandon (I believe) had a report beforehand that Speight would be the guy. Malzone is getting a legit look, but there is a little more evidence this year that he's a little further down the pecking order.

Giving the 2015 QB picture post a quick read, he sounds a bit like Devin Gardner - great athleticism, prototypical size, 5 star talent.  Sounds like a great fit.

What's the general read on his development?  Sounds like he's been playing American football in Sweden (military brat?), but how polished is he?  Don't know much about this kid's history.

Uh, pretty sure he's been in California playing American football at an American high school.  As far as I can tell he's a great athlete who is playing QB for his team sometimes, WR a little, basically just being the best athlete on the field.  Maybe like Arkansas' Matt Jones before he got in trouble for hard drugs.  I wish they would offer him, then consider turning him into a big reciever or TE if he doesn't work out at QB.  But I don't know what he thinks of that idea.  I read somewhere that he's averaging 125 yds passing per game on maybe 50% completions. So I suppose he could use some polish.

I've heard the biggest concern with Dillman is his passing and he apparently hasn't shown much as a passer so far this season.  While he is a 5 star now on 247, I don't get the feeling that will stay the case.
