1. Hoops vs Purdue

starts at 1:00

Matt Painter goes full Tom Izzo for 2 and a half minutes, including a foul with 6 seconds left. Before foul time they were 15/40 on two's, 4/16 on threes includes the late one. Playing Williams straight-up with Davis worked: he's 5/16 before nonsense time. Thread of dig-downs made him pick up his dribble. Return games (nisi ref job at Iowa) have been much better strategically. Hot hand effect: Purdue goes under X and gets away with it, but the rest of the guys had beautiful assists too. DDJ, Franz coming on, Franz is two days younger and far ahead of where Caris was at this point of his career.

2. Hoops vs Rutgers

starts at 27:30

The Castletoning but first Nunez runs to the corner on a break. Pikiell has to drop the P&R coverage he wanted because X hit his first two. Michigan can win games vs tournament teams on the road without shooting well from three. Return of Teske's defense. Jacob Young why are you talking? Remarkable stat line. Jalen Rose hanging on Eli Brooks.

3. Hot Takes and a Gimmicky Top Five

starts at 45:55

Eli: rock the Rip Hamilton mask from here out. Austin Davis in the future. How many picks in the 2021 draft class?

4. Hockey vs. ND

starts at 1:18:24

Another Michigan Notre Dame series where whoever scores first wins after a long and boring defensive battle. Insane ideas for increasing offense in such circumstances.

I haven't listened to the podcast yet. Did anyone discuss that Purdue / Painter avoided a double-digit loss? Maybe that's a point of pride, losing fewer times by 10 or more.

There is definitely a big unknown in what Livers will do with his potential NBA future after the year is over, but what is the general expectation on how we open up enough spots?

for the sake of argument lets say exit Simpson,Teske, Livers.

Enter - Todd, Dickinson, Williams, Jackson, Howard

Maybe Howard doesn't take a scholarship?

Don't pick up Austin Davis 5th year?

Nunes, Brooks possible exits?

Has there been much discussion on this?  What do the Mods say?

There has been much discussion on this on the board.  Like, A LOT.

Right now there are 11 guys on scholarship.  Teske and Simpson graduate.  That leaves 9 guys on scholarship, with 4 open.

Add Todd, Dickinson, Williams, Jackson.  Now we are at the limit.

Looks like Christopher is a likely get at this point.  That puts us one over.  If no one else leaves the program, Davis is not guaranteed a fifth year.  I think we can all agree that Davis would be more of an asset than a couple other guys that are on scholarship, but if Christopher signs, Todd doesn't go overseas, and no one leaves, Davis is a casualty of numbers crunch.

If Howard needs to be a walkon, I think that the idea is he can be.

agree,

will some of the guys that are not playing now see all the incoming talent and hit the road?

IMO Nunez would hit the road, possibly Castleton as well since he plays only sporadically now.

very excited to see how this year plays out, I think we NEED Davis back at this point. So nice to see him doing well finally and giving good minutes.

There's a lot that can happen and we try not to speculate in any main content-area because the players absolutely read this blog and it's the worst to read that your fans want you gone, or want your teammates gone. It is awesome that Austin Davis has played his way out of those conversations, but he has also played himself into quite a lot of options to go somewhere he is a starter, whereas at Michigan a year of progress from Colin Castleton and the arrival of an immediately capable Hunter Dickinson are likely to leave no more role for him than the one he has now. I'm sure Michigan would be better with him and would like to keep him but he gets to make that decision.

You also have to look at what's going on with the wings. Livers could go pro. Wagner could blow up in the playoffs and go pro. Bajema could get frustrated with how little he is playing, and/or Nunez could see his opportunity to play vaporized by the above decisions and the fact they are going to need to find a lot of minutes for Isaiah Todd. He could even find himself behind Williams and Howard.

Keep in mind there are guys on this team who are not getting very many minutes, have top 100 players coming in at their positions, and were not recruited by their current coaches. Even John Beilein learned you always recruit one slot over. Howard has the option to recruit two over because he can just pay for his son if need be.

My read on the roster situation is they are expecting at least one guy to leave who doesn't look like he's going to leave right now. And they are probably going to independently base their decision to give Jace scholarship on what Nunez does. Once they squeeze Todd and a healthy season of Livers into the wings rotation there aren't going to be a lot of minutes left.

The comments that swerve to next year reminded me of a thought after the game Saturday:

It it's amazing the team has at least NINE (9!) guys who have made a major contribution this season, some combination of points, assists, AND solid minutes when the team needed a contribution.

(I still haven't had time to listen to the podcast, so I may be repeating a point already made there, but I can't resist checking the site periodically.)

Couldn't agree more with Brian's #1 on the gimmicky top 5.

Once had a package of off brand wrap called Awesome Wrap.  It was, uh, not awesome.  In fact it was so very not awesome that we still joke about it years later.

Listen to Brian.  Buy brand name plastic wrap.
