Friday Recruitin' Is Excited For Visit Comment Count

Elliott Takes The Cake

Alright, so, um, perhaps that cake doesn't look exactly like Texas. That apparently didn't matter to top-100 TX DT Jordan Elliott, who moved up his official visit to this weekend, joining a packed list of expected weekend visitors. The Wolverine's Brandon Brown is reporting "multiple sources" have informed him that Michigan is in great position to land Elliott, whether it's during or after his official visit ($).

Elliott is near the top of the list of potential weekend commitments for Michigan. 247's Steve Wiltfong put in Michigan Crystal Ball picks($) for Elliott and three-star FL WR Keyshawn "Pie" Young; he already had ones in for top-ranked MD OG Terrance Davis and four-star Detroit King CB LaVert Hill—the Hill pick is one he's especially confident about. Wiltfong also confirmed that four-star King WR Donnie Corley will be in Ann Arbor tomorrow.

There have also been two five-star additions to the 2017 visitor list: Davis' high school teammate, RB Anthony McFarland, and IMG Academy standout DE Joshua Kaindoh. While Michigan hasn't been mentioned among the favorites for either, that could change after this weekend.

While the focus of the coaching staff is still primarily on wrapping up the 2016 class, we could see their 2017 efforts pick up steam, especially since many big-time junior prospects seem excited about Michigan. To wit:

Yup, safe to say they're excited.

Rashan Gary Is Probably Not Going To Ole Miss

Just about everyone considered five-star NJ DT Rashan Gary to be a strong Michigan lean entering his Ole Miss official last weekend. That feeling hasn't changed in the aftermath. One can point to Gary's tepid reaction to the visit, per Rivals' Adam Friedman ($):

"It was good," said the 6-foot-5, 295-pound Gary. "They took me to the room that I'd be staying in. It was cool. I had my own room and my own bathroom. That's not far from the classes so they're easy to get to.

Despite the headline of this article, Gary's mother—who's had only great things to say about Michigan—had a similarly lukewarm reaction. A post by one of the staff members of 247's Ole Miss outlet may give us a lot of insight as to why that's the case ($):

There is confirmation of an incident involving Rashan Gary's mother in the Grove that is just ridiculous. She was there for the Walk of Champions on Saturday and had not had enough time to get her credential. She was approached by security and asked to leave, I am told. An altercation ensued in which the rent-a-cop allegedly shoved her and cursed her. All things considered, I understand she took it as good as one could have. Other than that, we are told it was a good visit...

"Aside from the borderline assault by a supposed security guard, all was well."

Meanwhile, here's a quote from Gary's mother for an ESPN article this week about how Jim Harbaugh and Urban Meyer are succeeding by being hands-on recruiters ($):

“At Michigan we were recruited by the head coach. At other places you are recruited by the line coach or the area coach,” Coney said. “I don’t know that we’ve been recruited by another head coach before like that. I think Harbaugh is more interactive in the recruiting process.”

I still like Michigan's chances. Gary has further officials planned to Auburn and USC; it's unclear if he'll take another visit to Ann Arbor before making his decision.

Chris Daniels Is Probably Going To Oklahoma

With Keyshon Camp and Jordan Elliott visiting this weekend, defensive tackle recruiting should gain some clarity soon. So should this: fresh off an official visit to Oklahoma, four-star TX DT Chris Daniels announced he'll make his decision on December 18th.

The Sooners are the clear favorites. Daniels told 247's James Hale "I love OU, man," after the visit ($). When talking to Scout's Bob Przybylo, he also changed his tune about going to school far from home ($):

“Distance wasn’t a factor at first,” Daniels said. “But I’m a family-oriented guy. Distance is a big thing here going forward.”

Oklahoma is much closer to Texas than Michigan. This has been Geography With Ace, A Person Who Also Attended Elementary School.

Etc.

We covered a lot of ground with Steve Lorenz on Monday's radio show. If you haven't had time to listen to the podcast, alum96 did us all a solid and recapped our conversation on the board.

I'm not in love with Jordan Elliott's game. He doesn't have a variety of moves, and he's pretty lackadaisical. I can understand that sometimes if he's going both ways, but I don't think he plays offense. Add in the fact that he's already committed and decommitted twice, and I'm wary.

On the flip side, Keyshon Camp reminds me of Richard Ash. I don't know if that's good or bad. He didn't do much at Michigan, went on to play well at Western Michigan, and is now latched onto a practice squad in the NFL.

I like Corley. I don't think he's as much of a potential game breaker as a couple other guys, but he's a very solid prospect. Personally, I think Michigan needs guys like Pie Young, Velus Jones, etc., who can catch-and-run, return punts, etc. Unfortunately, Pie Young's highlights are filled with him getting penalties for early celebrations, flips into the endzone, etc., so that's a concern.

Anyway, I was asked a similar question on TTB the other day. I had Eddie McDoom at the top of my list. He's a polished kid who also has good long speed and run-after-catch ability. Then I would probably have Corley, Velus Jones, and then Young.

Considering I think we want our non-Gary DT to be a nose, I'd prefer Elliott. Camp is about 40lb lighter than Elliott and strikes me more of a DT/DE prospect. It's also harder to scout guys when you know they'll need to add 40 pounds because you don't know how their speed and stamina will hold up (or, less likely, if they'll be able to add the weight). It also likely delays when he'll be able to see the field. That said, I'm not going to be disappointed with Camp or anything.

I think Camp can play nose; he just needs some time to build up his body. We also don't need him to play immediately, since Glasgow, Mone, and Hurst all have at least one more year of eligibility. In fact, we don't lose anyone on the defensive line except Ojemudia and Jenkins-Stone, the weakside ends.

Hurst is playing nose at a shade over 280 lbs. Obviously, that's not the norm, but you don't need to be a mammoth to play that position.

If this recruiting class falls into place the way it looks like it will, this is starting to feel like the early Urban years at OSU, except that our coach does not have a shelf life.

Detroit MLK Donnie Corley won the state division 2 championship today by catching a Hail Mary touchdown end zone !!! Kid looks like the real deal. MLK QB is a stud as well!

into a max number of 27 in this class? They have a legit chance with all these guys, what if 10 want to commit this weekend? What do they do? Do they take away offers from the lesser recruits they have now or do they tell these better recruits sorry no room for you but thanks for coming?

I understand it's quite unlikely 10 guys would commit this weekend, just a hypothetical. So who are the top candidates to be "pushed away" besides Reese?

Also could one assume guys like Damario Jones and Jaron Dukes and other redshirt juniors who barely play, if at all, will graduate and not return next fall thus opening up a few more recruiting spots? I can't see why Michigan would want them back....or are those departures already factored into the 27 openings in this cycle?

Hypotheticals of things that won't happen aren't usually very revealing. There are four WRs visiting tomorrow. Every one of them knows we aren't taking four more WRs. The chances of all four committing this weekend is zero. If they all tried to, we wouldn't take them all.

It's safe to say there's a pecking order for recruits at various positions. The staff has to juggle holding out for the guys at the top vs taking commitments from others they like. None of us know how they're going to handle that going down the stretch other than they will save a spot for Gary and a few others.

The coaches have a recruiting board and they tell the prospects where they are at on it. The elite kids like Rashan Gary can wait until Signing Day without any chance that they lose their spot. The other kids know exactly how commitable their offers are.

I doubt Corley switches, but it would be funny for a hard MSU lean to want to watch UM and OSU instead of MSU possibly clinch their division. I'd get it if MSU was playing a cupcake, but you'd think it would be a nice moment to share with other recruits.

Corley can't "switch" cuz he hasn't committed anywhere yet. Until he flat out says "Michigan? Naw, I'm not feeling Harbaugh at all" - or actually signs a LOI - I'm not calling him out of reach for JH & Co.

Jordan Elliot - now that's a guy who has nice "switchability"...

I've said this before, but no insider types or Hudl experts have quashed it yet so I'm rolling with it:

Let T. Davis commit at OG, continue to push for Delance at OT, convince Onwenu he'll have a higher ceiling/be a higher draft pick as a NT. Then J. Elliot is a "bonus" if he signs.

Magnus questions his motor, and I've had more than my fill over the last decade with players not meeting their potential and not having high "motors" (that Sex Lion guy, Big Will, the "Penitentiary Abs" Safety from Fla, Mallett, too many WR & OL to list......)

Harbaugh BURNS to win - let's get players that feel the same!

Just curious. On game day how much time do our coaches actually have to spend with recruits. What is a typical official visit like?

Magnus

November 27th, 2015 at 8:26 PM ^

Most of their time before the game will be spent with recruiting coordinators, academic staff, etc. The coaches will probably spend Saturday evening and Sunday with recruits and their families, going to dinner, watching film at the football facilities, etc. Saturday night will be spent with the player hosts. Then usually the recruits fly out on Sunday afternoon/evening.
