If you can help out finding articles on any of the commits, e-mail me, and I'll try to include your contribution.

MI QB Devin Gardner

Last week: Inkster defeats Steubenville 36-29. It snapped a multi-year regular season win streak for the Big Red.

Inkster's season seemed over when Steubenville took a 29-28 lead with 1:19 left to play, but Michigan-commitment Devin Gardner completed a 63-yard bomb to Vorheese Zanders with 39 seconds left.

Gardner completed 14 of 25 passes for 275 yards and four TDs. He also ran 11 times for 55 yards and a score.

This local article provides much more detail on the gameplay itself. Video highlights from the local news. Also, this mgoboard thread was pretty epic while the game was in progress.

This week: Inkster (5-3) @ Dearborn Edsel Ford in Round 1 of the State Playoffs.

Having watched what seems to be almost all of Gardner's games (and I'm sure you've mentioned this somewhere already) what's your thoughts about where he is compared to where Tate and DR are right now? Obviously the college game is very different than High School - but what's your impression so far?

He's between Robinson and Tate in terms of ability to run (worse than the former, but better than the latter) and pass (opposite). He doesn't have top-flight speed like Robinson, nor will he ever be as accurate a passer as Tate.

However, he definitely seems to have a special intensity and (choke me for using this term) "it factor" that will make him the best of the three down the road. After a bit of development, he should be one hell of a player.

Should it be alarming that a lot of our defensive commits are not getting as many snaps on the defensive side of the ball? Or is this merely a result of smaller high school rosters necessitating multiple roles skewing towards the offensive side of things?

I don't follow HS football at all, but is it common for a guy that has to be your best defensive player to not play much defense? Why would that be, especially when many players play both ways?

This was a bit troubling for me as well. On most teams the stud players usually play both ways (except QBs, but even sometimes they will).

The only thing I can think of is that they have conditioning issues and the team needs them more on O.

Wondering that exact same thing. The bigger issue for us is that he is not spending a season playing at a need position for us. He may not come out of HS with the best technique, but he is at least playing the position to get more reps.

I was a little shocked to read that Miller only has 14 catches on the year. Is this indicative of their qb not getting him the ball, their offensive system focusing on the run, or him not getting open?

Tim or Tom VH - is there any insight as to why Wilkins coach is playing him primarily on offense this year rather than defense? Seems weird considering it says he was an all-state performer at DE.

These guys are racking up the yards. Especially in closer games, which is more telling of who stepped up and performed when the game was on the line. Their averages are obscene, but these numbers happen with high school backs. The competition should be the best, however, with the two texas backs who are still performing quite well.

I'm most impressed, however, with Tony Drake who seems to get, on average, fewer carries than either of the other two but still seems to get a good amount of yards. This could be a product of the dominant offensive line from Skyline, but you can't help but take notice on what he's doing with fewer opportunities.

Props to DG, btw. Came up big against a goliath of an opponent and performed well in the clutch.

Just a thought... I wonder, given the issues with DBs, whether there is potential for Conelius Jones to eventually emerge as either a DB or WR. We can all agree, I am certain, that's he's a project at the QB position. I have a feeling that he's a guy that given Brian's "throw them into the blender and see who comes out where sentiment" that he's a guy who very well could come in as a quarterback but leave as a DB or WR. Another possibility, considering his size and body structure, is that he could fill into a speed outside linebacker. He definitely has the size and athleticism that make up a good defensive skill player, but I'm not aware of him playing any snaps on defense during his high school career. Just something that I've been thinking about.
