SB Nation BlogPoll College Football Top 25 Rankings »
FLORIDA #1. Okay, okay, Mr. Hinton, I'm with you. Florida's collection of scalps is considerably more impressive than Alabama's. I'm still not sure about KSU because computers aren't margin aware and Alabama hasn't survived a scrap against Iowa State, they've demolished all Iowa-State-lookin' folk on the schedule.
GEORGIA GTFO. I was going to put them a lot higher and then I looked at South Carolina, looked at who South Carolina had lost to (#1 and #7, the latter by two points), looked at what happened to Georgia when they played South Carolina, looked at Georgia's schedule (best win: Missouri? Vandy?) and was all like GTFO. If they lose to UF this weekend, Georgia is probably going to end the regular season 10-2 without beating a team with more than 7 wins—and then they'll get a bowl game against a Big Ten team with seven wins. BIG TENNNN.
FLIPSIDE SOUTH CAROLINA. For all the reasons Georgia is low, South Carolina is still high despite getting throttled by Florida. They're Georgia except they've already played Florida and are 28 points better than Georgia. Four touchdowns == 9 spots. Science.
Oh look Big Ten teams again. Until next week, when all four of the BIG TENNNN teams at the bottom of the ballot lose even though two of them are playing each other.

Por que Nebraska 18?
The Wisconsin win looks better but isn't this still the same team that gave up 63 points against OSU and 650 yards against UCLA?

Seriously, that defense is atrocious. They are one of three contenders for Michigan 2010 of the year with OSU and West Viriginia.

Brian, I feel like you always make it a point to rank Michigan lower than the consensus mainstream polls: anti-homerism, if you will.
What are the reasons for this? Is it simply the fear of being called a homer (which I can imagine can be intense with these blogpolls) or do you really feel that M is slightly overrated in the polls? Have you ever voted Michigan above the mainstream (non-BCS) poll consensus in recent memory? Just curious.

We have to have the best 2 "losses" of any 2 loss team. Your reasoning for Flordia having better scalps is the same as the reasoning that the only teams that have beaten us are top 5.
October 22nd, 2012 at 7:13 PM ^
is against an either iffy MSU team or a bad Purdue team. Can't justify ranking Michigan higher just because they have the two best losses without them beating quality opponent. Other teams have worse losses than Michigan but has more and better quality wins than Michigan. That's the difference between being ranked at bottom half of top 25 as opposed to top 15.
October 23rd, 2012 at 12:39 AM ^
While UM's 2 losses are to teams in the Top 5, the combined record of the teams they've beaten is 12-24. Not a single 'quality' win yet.

Does it make anyone else nauseus to see Notre Dame in the top 5? Sure they're undefeated but sheesh. I'm not knocking the pollsters (or Brian), its just sickening to see them up there given their general average-ness at the game of football (aside from Te'o), in my opinion.
October 22nd, 2012 at 7:15 PM ^
is excellent. Nix, Shembo and Tuitt would all start for Michigan in addition to Te'o. There is a reason why ND defense is 2nd in FBS in points allowed. Yes, their secondary has been terrible but no one has been able to expose them thus far.

Also, if Mississippi State (#117 out of 124 in strength of schedule according to the first thing for SOS that google pulled up) and Ohio (#124 out of 124) are going to be ranked because they're undefeated, then so too should Rutgers (#115 in SOS).
*I don't think Rutgers or MSU are very good, but at least Rutgers went out and scheduled Arkansas in the non-conference schedule. It's not their fault that Arkansas got Jonelled. MSU's non conference schedule is Jackson State, Troy, South Alabama, and Middle Tennessee. Besides that, they've beaten Auburn, Kentucky, and Tennessee.

Four observations/"wonderments":
1) Why is Louisville ranked but not Rutgers? Both are undefeated Big East teams who have beaten a lineup of nobodies. Either they should both be ranked or they should both NOT be ranked. Personally, I lean towards the latter.
2) Why is South Carolina ranked #11 while UM is ranked #21? Both have been blown out by dominant looking squads (Florida and Bama, respectively) and lost close games to "good but not quite as good as their record indicates" squads (LSU and ND)? Is S. Carolina's win over a "meh" Georgia team the reason for those 10 spots? Or is it just the general suckiness of UM's wins?
3) Ohio University should NOT be ranked. They have one "marquee" win over PSU when PSU was still completely discombobulated and then a bunch of crappy wins over crappy opponents. OU's three most recent wins were by a TD or less against Akron, Buffalo and UMass who have a combined record of 2-20.
4) Nebraska at 18? Really?

I was going to point this out too (#2 on your list). If you want to beef up South Carolina because they lost to 2 very good teams, then you would have to do the same for UM. Yes, South Carolina destroyed UGA, but they don't have any other wins that are impressive (unless you want to count Mizzou/Vandy, which you negged UGA for).
Having said that, I don't think UM needs to be ranked higher, more that South Carolina needs to be ranked lower. At least a few spots lower.
October 23rd, 2012 at 8:54 AM ^
Agreed.
I failed to point that out in my post, but I was NOT arguing for UM to be higher rather I was arguing that USC(NTUSC) should be lower. I would put S. Carolina around 17, personally.

Its kind of hard to not put OSU high in the rankings considering they are undefeated . . . Where else would you rank them?

I didn't say (write, actually) OSU, I was writing about Ohio University (I even used the full name to avoid any confusion). I don't do that stupid "Ohio mean Ohio State" thing that Brady likes. Just seems silly to me.
October 22nd, 2012 at 5:26 PM ^
I think Alabama should be number one by a large margin. The reason: does anyone really think Florida would lay the beating on Michigan that Alabama did? I think Michigan and Florida would be a last-minute finish, and I would rate it a toss-up.
I don't think the SEC is nearly as strong as many others do, but I still think Alabama has bought and loopholed itself the best roster in college football.
October 22nd, 2012 at 7:37 PM ^
is basically Bama lite. They run power offense and literally ran against a very tough LSU defense at will. Michigan's biggest weaknesses is power running game. Florida's defense is pretty damn good especially their front 4. Florida is a better team, and isn't as close as you think it is.
Michigan is an average team and has no quality win to speak of. You don't get the sense of how good Michigan really is this year because B1G is a terrible conference overall.
October 23rd, 2012 at 9:03 AM ^
I have to disagree.
Bama has only played and, unfortunately, beaten one good team: Michigan. The rest of their schedule thus far has been pretty d#mn weak. Florida has played a much tougher schedule and won all of those games. Their resume is far and away the most impressive in CFB in my eyes.
Personally, I am really shocked at how good UF is this season. I was expecting them to finish no better than 9-3. I probably should NOT be shocked, though, because this is the 4th season after their most recent MNC (2008) and it is usually about that time that the elite recruits a team signs based off a MNC win are all experienced starters. Muschamp is reaping the benefits of St. Urban's 2nd MNC title right now.
October 26th, 2012 at 5:47 AM ^
Have you looked at the breakdown of the starters and the years in the program?
October 22nd, 2012 at 9:20 PM ^
God I can't wait to see Mississippi State get rolled up Saturday night by Alabama. I don't know why I have it out for them, wait yeah I kind of do and it happens to be their SOS, but I do. I hope Alabama doesn't let up and make this a close SEC game. I want Miss. St. gone and out of the rankings so I quit re-looking up their schedule and vomitting.
Regarding the poll, not much to argue with (maybe some have a few nit-picks but overall it's sound). I'd finally put Michigan a little higher above Nebraska for sure but it's all moot at this point.
October 26th, 2012 at 5:46 AM ^
They are playing in Tuscaloosa and while some games have been close (only winning by 2 and a half touchdowns) those are generally when the third string is in.
Barring NCAA action, no one is stopping Alabama.
