Dick Vitale needs some Maalox.

And you can't have one without the other!

Happy Thanksgiving everybody!

LOL. Roy Williams remains a trash coach. 20+ point run and no TO? Meanwhile our first year coach calls TO after a 9-0 run to settle down the team and Keep control of the game. Win this weekend and I’m going to Louisville!

If you actually look at the numbers, there is essentially zero correlation between timeouts and scoring runs / droughts.  “Momentum” in sports is a myth, and always has been.  Use a timeout if you see a matchup imbalance that you need to correct, if there’s a schematic adjustment that needs to be made, etc.  Using a timeout because the opposition has strung together a few baskets in a row shows little except ignorance about probability.

Ridiculous comment.  The reason the other team generally goes on a run is because they have found something that works offensively and defensively. You call the TO to explain what's going wrong and make adjustments to counter what the other team had found, or to remind your team what was working and what they make have receded from.  If TOs didn't work, coaches wouldn't have been doing it for a hundred years. The shifting tides caused by each team's adjustments is called, by the way, momentum.

No; absent personnel issues, the reason that teams normally go on runs is random chance.  Michigan shoots about 50% from the floor (which is excellent).  At one point during the run, they hit five consecutive shots.  They didn’t do that because they identified some specific weakness; they got lucky.

TOs don’t work, but coaches have been doing it for a hundred years, for the same reason that they’ve been punting incorrectly on fourth down in basketball, refusing to foul when up three, etc.: common knowledge is often wrong.

Momentum doesn’t exist.  It’s a false narrative created by these same thought processes.  At best, you can determine, after the fact, that streaks occurred, but there’s nothing that you can do to create a streak or to stop your opponent’s streak. (If there were some magical way to make your team play better, why wouldn’t you do it all the time?)

Momentum exists.  If I'm "on a roll" at work, it usually means I'm focused on my task and having a productive day.  If the phone rings or an unexpected interruption occurs, my momentum is stopped.  Maybe I can get it back.  Maybe not.  In any case, there's a period of time spent trying to get back up to speed.

In basketball, if you call a TO, you interrupt a system in which the opponent is clicking in unison, communicating, working together.  Maybe they get that back, maybe they don't.  At the very least, you give your team a chance to cut into the rhythm while they're getting back on track.

It's not a magic bullet, but to say momentum doesn't exist is silly.

Sorry but that take could not be more wrong.  I guess it is random chance that Carolina almost came back in the game immediately after the timeout.  Come on, college coaches are paid millions of dollars to babysit random chance.  They know what they are doing.

Great games by Eli and DDJ. Let Carolina shoot those brick mid-range jumpers and kept their ORebs to a manageable level. Franz was pressing and looked like the game was moving way too fast for him but that's to be expected at this stage. Can't wait to see us play Gonzaga. This team is fun.

Michigan up 24 mid-way second half...

Dickie V:  Nobody expected this.

My Dad who never watches basketball (to me):  Didn't you say Michigan beat them by 17 last year?

Priceless Thanksgiving memories.
