M Softball loses in exhibition game to Dutch National Team
The Univerisity of Michigan lost to the Dutch National Team today by a score of 7-1. Hilary Payne took the loss by giving up 2 earned runs off 6 hits in 3 innings of work. Stehpanie Speiermen gave up 1 ER off 6 hits in 3 innings of relief. She stuck out 4 and walked 2.
The offense was led by Bree Evans who went 1 for 3, scored the lone UM run. She also had a stolen base. Amanda Chidester went 1 for 3 and the only RBI.
The Dutch were led by American Lindsey Meadows who was a pitcher for the LA Tech Uninveristy softball team. She has been playing professional ball for 6 years.
EDIT: The Michigan underclassmen also committed 4 errors which resulted in 4 unearned runs. The Dutch only scored 3 earned runs.
Hutch took the opportunity to give Jordan Taylor and Dorian Shaw a much needed break. It was a good opportunity for some of the underclassmen to get their first start for the Wolverines. Fr Mandy Powers, Fr Lindsay Doyle, and Fr. Brandi Virgil all started for UM. No seniors and only 1 junior played today. Ther rest were So, and Fr.
This game showed the real class in Hutch. She new that this was an exhibition game and instead of going for a meaningless win, she wanted to get the Freshmen in as starters. These girls will probably not start, let alone get much playing tim, the rest of the season. If Hutch can make it deep into the World Series, she is COY in my book.
Now for all you MGoBloggers who say that Michigan hasnt played anyone, dont get out the "see I told you so" card. Every game is not a "must-win" game (gulp). I know it is difficult for people to believe this, but it is true. Of course every coach plays to win every single pitch. However, there are times where a coach needs to see what the underclassmen can do in an exhibition game. This game is meaningless. I dont even think the stats will be entered in the record books.
There have been many games where I have played girls in different positions just to get a look. I had one game where my starting catcher ask me to pitch in one game. She was a pitcher in summer ball when she was younger. So there was an opportunity in a tourney to let her pitch. It was the highlight of her life to that point. I told her parents that she "might" be pitching and dont miss this game. Her parents and I were so proud of her. I will never forget the look of fear in her eyes when I announced the line up and the smile when I gave her the game ball in a 7-1 win. It is those moments that make coaching worth while.
Great job Hutch. We are all proud of you.
This really hurts their chances to medal.
I didnt look at the situation this way. I guess we will have to settle for the Big 10 Championship and a NCAA World Series Championship.
Just have to win the rest of the games in pool play. Silver ain't bad. Just cat get the shameful shameful bronze.
I was still hoping they could get it together against the Soviets and then maybe Finland in the Gold Medal game.
Exhibit A: The 2008 Olympics.
USA detroys Japan 9-0 in pool play. They meet Japan again in the semis of the medal round and win 4-1. Japan was not eliminated. Instead, they played Australia, the winner of the other semi-final. Japan beats Australia and then ends up beating the US 3-1 in the gold medal game.
Japan lost twice, including once in the medal round. The US loses only once over the entire Olympics. The Olympic softball format made absolutely no sense.
Nuke 'em. See ya Dutch peoples.
The softball team from the greatest university in the world loses to the softball team from the greatest country in the history of mankind. Fitting, I guess.
Hup Holland!
Nice to see another Frisian on here
make it two. the tallest place on earth
They need to tighten it up
that the underclassmen made 4 errors. The Dutch only scored 3 earned runs so the game was closer than the score. I will update the OP.
I see what you did there
Well played.
nooooo
I hate to be the anal mgospeller, but you might want to change the OP (looses?). I have this twisted mental picture of the softball team getting loose..
but I'm not MGoSoftball. I think you clicked the wrong Reply button MgoblueAF :-)
Nope. I was just too lazy to post it to its proper place because I'm on an iPhone.
Let me preface this by saying I know nothing about college softball. That being said, why are we playing the Dutch National Team? Do national teams hang around and scrimmage softball teams regularly during the season? Also, what if there are college players on the respective national teams?
that only a few college girls make the Olympic team. They cannot play until NCAA seasone is over.
Mmmm... dutch girls...
all hairy and nasty.....Ugly Parents too.
Nicklas Backstrom plays for the Dutch softball team?
Apparently so.
If she can make oliebollen, I don't even care.
Well, maybe I care a little bit, but seriously, oliebollen.
The Dutch were lead by American Lindsey Meadows who was a pitcher on the LA Tech University softball team.
Why exactly does she qualify for the Dutch National Team? If it were Lindsey Van Meadows I might understand.
for any national team. Residency is all that is required. Meadows was playing professional softball over there. She probably new she would never make the US team so she made the Dutch team.
"There have been many games where I have played girls in different positions just to get a look. "
Pervert.

are not necessary.
Their schedule has been pretty weak to date. It's not a criticism. It's an honest acknowledgement. People would say the same thing about the football team if they started the season 4-0 against 3 MAC schools and Duke.
We all know how good of a softball program we have but, as we have with our revenue sports, we have learned to temper expectations until we see how our teams stack up against top quality competition.
their is only 1 chick on that dutch team worth banging
man some ugly looking broads
not even duece bigalow would smash alot of them
Stay classy, Brew. I mean Brah.
You ain't much if you ain't Dutch
