Dave Brandon "Sets Record Straight" on Brock Mealer
In his most recent blog post Dave Brandon mentions that the uncertainty surrounding Brock Mealer is untrue. He says Hoke personally called Mealer to make sure he knew he was welcome.

That's good to hear, but it makes me wonder why there is this story that suggests the opposite is true is floating out there in major media publications.
January 21st, 2011 at 7:22 PM ^
Local newspapers are always reliable and they never bend the truth to get more readers.
January 21st, 2011 at 7:25 PM ^
It wasn't just local newspapers reporting this. ESPN, amongst others, were reporting the same.
January 21st, 2011 at 7:35 PM ^
WHAT!!!! ESPN reported it...... well damn it has to be true. ESPN would never report anything untrue. ESPN is just about as bad as the Freep in my mind. They get wind of any kind of rumor and run with it. For the record, I never heard ESPN report it and I watch it 24/7. The Toledo blade did a piece on Brock and neglected to talk to him or Michigan reps before running the story. From what I hear, Brock is pretty pissed about the story because it was completely untrue.
This just in.......ESPN is reporting that unnamed sources say that there is indeed a Santa Clause. You assholes better behave.

that makes me feel much better. Espn the TMZ of sports.

I am sad for you.
January 21st, 2011 at 7:37 PM ^
... you just referred to them as a major news organization. That's hilarious. ESPN is entertainment and nothing more. They pick up stories from these other local sources and simply say "Newspaper X" says "Y". It's purely to capture the clicks that would otherwise be going to those other sources. it has little to do with validity and everything to do with page views.
It's exhausting how people simply take as truth things published on the internet.
Let's try it... I am dating Alessandra Ambrosio.

... come on...

Damn, it's not true.

I referred to ESPN as a major media outlet, which they are -- I don't suppose you want to dispute that, as well. Maybe instead of skewering someone for wondering why this rumor emerged from nowhere, you should work on reading comprehension.
Of course, since I'm being negbanged by everyone, there must be something hideously wrong with being curious as to the genesis of this rumor.
I am very happy to hear that this rumor about Brock no longer having access to rehabilitation via the University of Michigan is not true. I am also very unhappy that such a rumor existed at all, and would like to know why it existed in the first place -- I'm not questioning why ESPN isn't a panacea of truth. That much is obvious from the Herbstreit/Miles fiasco several years ago.
January 21st, 2011 at 8:43 PM ^
You have to pay attention very carefully to how ESPN reports things. They are often simply an echo chamber for other news organizations. They frequently will say things like "REPORT: Mealer unwelcome at Michigan." When they do that, they are indicating that they do not have a source, but that some other media outlet is reporting this. They technically aren't standing behind the report, though viewers might not catch this distinction.
January 21st, 2011 at 8:55 PM ^
ESPN didn't do independent reporting. they reported that a Toledo newspaper was reporting...
January 21st, 2011 at 8:56 PM ^
look good and they hate Hoke and want him to fail for the way he betrayed his alma mater Ball State.

ESPN didn't do anything other report on a story put out by the Toledo Blade and then add their own unresearched and uneducated speculation.
January 21st, 2011 at 9:30 PM ^
ESPN is a media outlet on paper. In practice, they are not much better then the Freep. Remember when they played "follow the leader" like everyone else on the "RR to be fired today" meme the day BEFORE he was actually fired?
January 21st, 2011 at 9:34 PM ^
Think of it this way. The "reporting" ESPN does could essentially be accomplished by a bunch of guys skimming the Internet and print media for noteworthy stories, adding spin by Expert Commentators like Lou Holtz or Media Darling Du Jour, and passing them off as news. It's more of a media clearinghouse for sports information than an actual "investigation" style of sports reporting.

ESPN are about as reliable as a drug dealer.

ESPN are?

British English considers organizations as plural. ESPN in this context = they.

I had more Mgopoints b/c I would neg you. ESPN also reported 3 years ago what Les Miles was coming to M. Thats funny. He was never offered the job. So ESPN can make up whatever they want. Who is going to challenge them? You suck.

and that was going to change. He then went out and hired a coach with a losing record who has never been a HC at a BCS school. You figure maybe he's going to get some big names on his staff which doesn't happen either sans Mattison. Maybe Hoke "Lucien" him.
January 21st, 2011 at 7:32 PM ^
Because controversy sells better than continuity.
The Toledo Blade took a shoot first and ask questions later approach, some other outlets picked it up.
January 21st, 2011 at 8:35 PM ^
The media is publishing untrue negative stories about this coach BEFOAR his team even plays a single game!!!
Hoke is getting the RichRod treatment already?!?!?
January 21st, 2011 at 10:47 PM ^
Maybe you ought to call Brock to confirm it...
January 21st, 2011 at 10:58 PM ^
How about calling the guy who they are reporting about. Maybe he would know the truth. But like my good friends Mickey Redmound says, "Never let the facts get in the way of a good story".

If you're referring to this, it's about how reports were Brock wouldn't be allowed to train at Michigan anymore.

Ad nauseum

I believe this, No matter how incompetent DB has come off as, I can't believe he would turn his back on Brock. Brock was probably the greatest story of the year.
January 21st, 2011 at 7:20 PM ^
Excellent news. I'm glad that this is settled and that DB set the record straight.
January 21st, 2011 at 7:21 PM ^
One of those awkward things involved in coaching changes. Glad it all worked out.

Fact: Dave Brandon reads this blog and responds to the false rumors, even if we already know his answer before he gets around to telling everyone else. Gotta love the quick info you get here.

thing at other institutions--the boss is either so revered, so arrogant, or so feared that his/her stuff fails to get the once-over before s/he hits send. Result: comes off looking like poop. Somebody take the guy aside, soon.
January 21st, 2011 at 7:52 PM ^
I would guess the problem isn't with Brock not being welcome back at UM but more to do with Barwis and staff, who know brocks rehab so well, not being around or even in the area anymore.
<br>
<br>Either way I'm glad DB finally did the right thing and I wish Brock the best.

BH would never turn his back on a Michigan Man "Brock". Never mind the 4 Letter Network, this will always be an inspirational story that will continue to develop. Go Blue!

Brock's story is way better than Rudy.

Kudos to Dave Brandon for calling out the media on this! Maybe they will be more carefull if they know that their half-truths will be challenged!
