Meta: Banner Contest
I was just wondering when we were going to see a new banner up? I liked a lot of the banners from the contest and I figured that there was going to be a new round of voting to compare the best from each group. If the mods are just too busy right now with the football season that's completely understandable.

The banners from the banner contest weren't as good as the one we have now.

JordanBakerSays should be banned, now, for such a comment.

I guess I'm not entitled to my own opinion?

Of course not; this is the internet after all.

I like the current banner but it needs to go HD and stretch across the whole screen.

to get the boner contest up and running

........not cool brah

this is awkward.

I +1'd cuz it made me laugh out loud and NOT cuz it made me feel funny inside or anything weird like that.

"...I think it moved..."

It has to move on contact. That's what a gym teacher once told me.

right after Dark Blue's comment

"6 to 12 bruh?"
October 26th, 2010 at 2:33 PM ^
The banner is cool, but perhaps just change the # of the player to 16 and add some dreads?

I think the boner contest got the kibosh because of some sort of Cease & Desist from the University. Something about depictions of our favorite Maize and Blue student athletes being in violation of NCAA rules. Or something of the suches.
I had assumed that MGoBrian considered it more trouble than it was worth to continue.

...no one's going to point out the elephant in the room here?

The problem with the banner contest is that I was contacted by the U about using winged helmets and block Ms in any way and am not sure if they are right that it's not fair use like some local law-talking guys have suggested.
Every banner that made it to the final eight used at least one of those because it's, like, a Michigan blog. I was hoping to resolve that by meeting with that wing of the U, but they never responded to my request and so I'm just out here in limbo wondering WTF to do.
October 26th, 2010 at 3:34 PM ^
I'd go with the naked guy boner.
October 26th, 2010 at 9:04 PM ^
I'll consider it.
October 26th, 2010 at 3:37 PM ^
If it didn't cause you any true risk, I'm pretty sure putting it up anyway would get the conversation rolling...

Maybe we could use Minnesota's block M instead? I don't think anybody's using it anymore....
October 26th, 2010 at 11:56 PM ^
The current one has both a winged helmet and a Block M, so why does it pass muster and others don't?
October 27th, 2010 at 12:31 AM ^
Just guess here, but perhaps it has to do with the fact that the current banner was up before Brian was contacted about the use of the block M and the winged helmet and so putting something new up might seem like flaunting the guidelines.
October 27th, 2010 at 1:17 AM ^
that seems like a reasonable guess. The only other thing I've thought of is that the banner uses drawings instead of actual images, so maybe that gets treated differently?
October 26th, 2010 at 3:43 PM ^
Get the dude who made the Denard figure wallpaper to make you a banner. Kid has talent.
October 26th, 2010 at 4:01 PM ^
I would declare his the winner without even seeing it.
October 26th, 2010 at 5:23 PM ^
What about this banner?
October 26th, 2010 at 5:49 PM ^
and the university already TM'd him
October 27th, 2010 at 12:33 AM ^
Isn't there some differentiation between using a winged helmet logo (which I'm assuming is a trademark of the University) and a picture of a player which happens to have a winged helmet? It seems like a lot of blogs would be in violation if that weren't the case.

when the photo was taken in public or with rights of the university. this is probably the portion of the law i know the least, though, when it comes to taking a pic of something in the stadium from the stands and then reselling it, etc.
regardless, i believe the fair usage is being lent to original works that are not being executed at the detriment of the university. in that sense, the awesome wallpapers being created are not creating a profit for the creator but drawings then placed on t-shirts come in direct profit competition with university-authorized product and, thus, received the c&d.
again, not entirely sure about these issues but profit seems to always be the decider.
October 26th, 2010 at 6:08 PM ^
is the OBVIOUS answer.
October 26th, 2010 at 7:09 PM ^
Who created the current banner? It is all sorts of awesome, imo. Don't change!
October 26th, 2010 at 8:41 PM ^
The obvious answer here is that Brian just thinks the current banner is awesome and sometimes unilateral decisions trump democracy. Remember, it didn't even win last year, but the one that did win had copyright problems and Brian just decided to throw this one up there (I don't believe it finished second or anything either) and frankly I have no problem with that, because the banner is great. I agree with maybe an improvement on the theme, but not a total change.
A number change and dreads is a good idea. Also, doing a blueprint for GERG's hair would be funny.
October 27th, 2010 at 12:34 AM ^
Are you implying Brian is using copyright issues as a smokescreen for unilateral banner decisions?! This is an outrage!
October 28th, 2010 at 8:07 PM ^
Or a blue block M with maize outline? Does switching up the colors change things enough for the lawyers?
