I was reading that with most…

I was reading that with most space exploration satellites the launch is 90% of the mission risk, but for JWST its only 10%. Fingers crossed for the continued deployment!

Those were the days I do remember those days. Wish I had the time to post like I did back then.
Michigan Researchers Working to Help!

A good friend of mine (Tim Hall, PhD) leads a really innovative group in Biomedical Engineering at Michigan that is developing significant improvements to Lithotripsy to help make the stone passing easier.  Leaders and Best to help future patients through this painful process! Here's a few links to their publications.  You can also read a story about the general technology, which is being pursued by a large group of Michigan researchers, here or here.  They are all great scientists and great people personally.  You may eventually receive the benefits from the company they founded.

Former physics major, now Asst Prof in Internal Medicine...

I majored in physics at a medium size public liberal arts school that was not highly ranked.  My original intent was to be a high school physics teacher (teaching is certainly one of the job prospects).  I think physics is a great foundation for almost any future career that requires quantitative analysis, that being said your son will likely need to go on to grad school to specialize in whatever area interests him for the long term.  That may be a continuation of physics or it may go elsewhere.

For myself, after my undergraduate degree I caught the physics bug and did the Applied Physics PhD at Michigan and eventually found myself in the biomedical realm as an Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine (I now describe myself as a biomedical engineer and do research in ultrasound at a university).  I never would have imagined myself having that title as a high school student, so I think it is anecdotal support that your son can go on to do almost anything with a physics degree.

If your son really wants to stay in the 'astro' realm, then the comment above that academia, NASA, or a similar research institution is probably going to be the main way forward.  If the interest is more broadly space, then there are a number of job opportunities in the private sector (think SpaceX or satallite manufacturers).

My 21 month old daughter has

My 21 month old daughter has been able to successfully answer the question "Who is Michigan's football coach?" since she was about 16 months old.  It was the first question she could correctly answer on a consistent basis.  She also says it with an enthusiasm unknown to toddlers (which is quite a bit of enthusiasm).

I know that's not the same as her first word, but it's the best I've got.

How do they know when to out the 4 DTs out there? Forgive me if this is a stupid set of questions, but this formation is just a switch in formation, not personnel, right? If so that means the play isn't tipped until the huddle is broken, right? Is the offense so slow after breaking the huddle that as Michigan is lining up, PSU still has time to perform the necessary substitutions to get 4 DTs on the field? Or was M playing so run heavy that PSU often had 4 DTs on the field? I'm just curious what allowed PSU to get this set of personnel out there to stop the tackle over.
Outstanding post! Not to take away from Brian or Ace, but this is my favorite post from this season!
Me too! A great print, especially since I'm in it (even if I'm just a small dot on the far side of the print). Great panorama!
Don't forget to vote each day

Kovacs is up to 33% (McGloin is at 34%)

Kovaks with 4% of the vote...

Voted!  I can't beleive that we'll let a Penn State or Nebraska player to come ahead of Kovaks!

Both him and his dad

I saw both of them coming out of the Junge Center as I was walking into the stadium for the game this weekend.  McCray was walking with all of the other recruits.

Ballot ~= Entrance Keep in mind that this is a ballot being together. The 'election' will whittle the list down.
You're not a lonely outlier.

You're not a lonely outlier.  I'd place Panchero's in my number one spot.  I'd swap BTB and Chipotle and put Qdoba third.  I also loved that Panchero's and BTB were right on campus.  The others were a hike.

Because it's the first number I could find that wasn't taken.

I'll buy it!

You are Monumental!

Great wallpaper and great service you do for those kids.  The facebook page has been liked!  I look forward to reading updates on the Bears in addition to the Wolverines now!

Great Job!  I'm really digging your weekly wallpapers.  The pupil is really nicely done!

Tenure normally takes more than 10 years (post bachelors)

For the sciences (I'm in Biomedical Engineering), after getting a PhD (which takes 4-8 years depending on your work), you then typically need to do 2-3 years of post-docing.  After that, you try tot get the assist. prof position (tenure-track), and you come up for tenure review 6-7 years after your start.  So tenure is normally something you can get 12-18 years after getting your bachelors degree.

A lot more universities (including Michigan) are doing 'research-track' positions now that never come up for tenure.  These positions are almost exclusively soft-money (i.e. industrial and federal grants).  If you bring in the money, you get to keep your job.  If you don't, then your salary gets cut (and you likely are let go).  Contracts for the research track are typically 1-2 years and you have to keep getting them renewed.

In case it helps for trouble shooting, I'm running iTunes 10.4.1 on Mac OSX 10.7.1.

I tried deleting my subscription and resubscribing, but that didn't solve the problem.  Would love to know if anyone has gotten it to work.

AAUM now lists all Official Alumni Bars

The main AAUM website lists all official locations for "football watching parties".  It sounds like these are all the ones that alumni clubs have submitted.  Perhaps these are all already on the map.  I didn't see this link though in any of the comments.

Cincinnati, OH

The Black Finn is no longer where folks are getting together to watch Michigan games in Cincinnati.  Unfortunately there is no set place right now.  The best option is to check out the Cincinnati Alumni page on facebook.  Folks have been active about marking down bars in Cincinnati there.

JLo, perhaps you can just put the weblink on the marker in Cincinnati?

If you want a place to put down, I've found that Oakley Pub and Grill at 3924 Isabella Avenue, Cincinnati, OH always changes the channel to the Michigan game for me.  They hang a Michigan flag in the bar, but they also hang OSU and ND flags too...

But it's as if they

But it's as if they only lose 3 players right (since they keep 82 players each year)?  I always thought when someone loses XX scholies per year that meant that they lost XX 4 year scholarships.  That is, if someone losses 5 scholarships per year for 2 years, they would go from 85 scholarships to 80 scholarships to 75 scholarships.

I'm probably wrong though.

Advanced Metrics

This is why we like advanced metrics, and most of the 'professional' commentators don't.  It ruins their punchlines.

(not that you even need to go advanced, percentages do a fine job as you point out)

I wasn't at 2009 @ MSU, so I

I wasn't at 2009 @ MSU, so I can't comment on it, but 2008 Northwestern and 2010 @ Purdue are by far the worst games I've been to since being a season ticket holder (2004 season, so not too far back).

2011 WMU was certainly hot, but in the end the rain actually felt really good.  It's true that you can layer up as much as you want for cold, where as there is a limit on what you can do for hot.  However, once precipitation gets in there with the cold, that's the worst of all possible situations IMHO.

Coordinators are in control

Maybe this was known already, but I was surprised to see Hoke without headphones.  He must have really turned things over to the coordinators.

I felt the same way.  The larger picture and picture quality was great.  I was severly dissappointed that there were no stats (besides score, timeouts, and time).  Seemed like they were working out a lot of kinks too.  So I'm guessing things will be better next weekend.
