I figured this would be the easiest way to compile a list of potential inagural class candidates.  The 190 comment thread would be a difficult place to keep track, so here we can be a little more organized.  Make suggestions and I'll add them to the lists.  Since this is just a way to keep track of potential candidates, feel free to throw out some "maybes."  Mods, feel free to edit the OP accordingly.

This may also help keep that initial thread focused on the manner in which people are elected, etc.  Without further adieu...

Do you have Shawn and Matt Hunwick confused?  Because Shawn's final season is obviously you know, ongoing.

I'm not sure I'd vote for his inclusion, but I think Leon Hall is definitely someone worth considering.

Kevin Porter's last season was 2007-08. Add TJ Hensick (2006-07 final season) at least, since he was really the last of the midget destroyers on the hockey team.

I think Braylon's outside of the range Brian wanted since he was gone in 2005.

I'm not arguing that Abram or Brown need to make the final cut, but the parameters for nomination haven't exactly been etched in stone.  Abram was a consistent contributor, playing for an incompetant HC and while fighting through an injury plagued career.  Brown worked as hard as anyone.  He was constantly going after lose balls and he was a solid rebounder.

Some notable stats for Abram and Brown:

  • Abram sits at #28 on Michigan's career leaders for total points scored.
  • Abram sits at #18 on three pointers made.
  • Abram sits at #4 on free throw percentage.
  • Brown sits at #20 for total rebounds.
  • Brown sits at #28 for average rebounds.
  • Brown and Abram are tied for 11th for games started.

Are these stats overly impressive?  No.  However, we are talking about a pretty small window (2005-present).  The list of potential candidates will be inherently thin.  Abram and Brown may not belong in an "elite" HOF, but Brian said himself that being "really good" should not be the only metric for consideration.  I stand by my OP.

Amaker finished .500 or better in the Big Ten 4 out of the 6 years he was here, despite inheriting a complete clusterfuck of a program, NCAA sanctions, and dealing with atrocious facilities.  He's now won 20+ games each of the last three years at a school that had never won a conference title before his arrival and hadn't made the NCAA tournament since the '40's.

Calling the guy "incompetent" is completely ridiculous.

It is spelled HOKEAMANIA.  Our coach is an ass-kicking American citizen, not one of the Beatles, for Christ's sake!

but Amaker is a terrible coach.  He proved to be a decent recruiter, which contributed to his occasional mediocore success when at Michigan, but Michigan consistently underachieved with him leading the team.

He is finding success at Harvard but I suspect a lot of that has to do with him being able to put a more talented team on the floor than the other league teams more so than anything else.

There were a lot of great players who played in that era for Michigan hockey but didn't stay around long enough to be considered like Pacioretty, Cogliano or Palushaj.

The one player we may consider is Chad Kolarick. He finished his Michigan career with 174 points, 9 less than Kevin Porter and 22 more than Carl Hagelin.

I think you need something iconic beyond your play on the ice/floor/field to get you in.  For example, RVB was a good player, arguably an all-Big Ten kind of player, but there were several defensive linemen better than him in the Mgoblog era (Graham, Woodley, Branch, Martin, possibly Tim Jamison and Terrence Taylor).  But RVB was a fantastic leader and was part of the group that kept Team 132 together (and comes off incredibly well in Three and Out), so gets bonus points for symbolizing all of that (along with Molk and Martin and Koger, who wasn't productive enough on the field to get in).  Similarly Kolarik's numbers are better than Hagelin, but Hagelin had a knack for timely goals, was great defensively, is the fastest hockey player I've ever seen live, and had the Swedish flag.

Not to disagree with you on your overall point, because Kolarik was amazing and certainly deserves HOF consideration, but there are a bunch of players who have scored 10 GWG's in a season: Colin Himingway, UNH, 2002; Chuck Kobasew, BC, 2001; Doug Weight, LSSU, 1991; Tim Barakett, Harvard, 1986, John Newberry, Wisconsin, 1982; Aaron Broten, Minny, 1981; Tom Earl, Colgate, 1970

Having seen admittedly few games from Hagelin's career, I think Cogs was faster. Hagelin was by far the better player overall, but there's a reason Cogs' speed was compared to Bure in his draft year.

Also, Kolarik definitely deserves at least some consideration on the list. He's not a shoo-in like Porter, but if someone completely overrated like Brent Petway is on the list, there's no way Kolarik isn't. He completely changed his game between his freshman year and his senior year, and in his senior year did everything he could to push for Porter getting the Hobey despite being just as good and important to the team. When he got hurt against Lake State and had to miss the series against MSU and Ferris (including the senior night festivities), it was heartbreaking because he really was one of those guys who gave his all to the team. And to come back from that injury by posting a hat trick against UNO in the CCHA playoffs was awesome, especially because you could tell that he still wasn't 100%.

The more I think about it, the more I'm convincing myself that Kolarik should totally be in this HOF...

I threw him on there because:

A: This is a nomination list, not actual members.

B: Brent Petway helped turn things around from a basketball interest perspective, along with Horton and Abram and Hambone.

C: His time was when I became a diehard hoops fan, so it's a personal pick.  And he was everything a Michigan Man should be.

D: This is a fan Hall of Fame.  Otherwise, a punter would never be considered.

E: The haircut.

Sorry if I offended you with the Petway comment - I just grabbed a name at random from the basketball list. But Kolarik, in my opinion at least, is far more deserving than Petway, because Kolarik's contribution to the team as a whole was greater than Petway's. And I'd argue that he's just as much a "Michigan Man" (god what a terrible meme, by the way) as Petway was.

Also, can you change the OP to "Chad Kolarik" (without a c in the last name) and "Mark Mitera" (as opposed to Mike). Thanks!

I think Petway wins (maybe even big) in the "captured the fans heart" category while his actual significance and performance are very little compared to others on the list.

If we go with the Bill Simmons pyramid idea that Brian suggested, then Hart would make it on...but I don't think he deserves first ballot.

He gets in because of his numbers, because of games like 2007 Penn State and his never quit attitude but...let's be honest: Michigan was 0-4 against Ohio during his time here and 1-3 in bowl games. In those 4 games his numbers to finish out the season:

2004: Ohio 18 carries, 61 yards, 1TD. Texas 21 carries, 83 yards

2005: Ohio 9 carries, 15 yards. Nebraska 19 carries, 74 yards

2006: Ohio 23 carries, 142 yards, 3 TDs. USC 17 carries, 47 yards

2007: Ohio 18 carries, 44 yards (played hurt). Florida 32 carries, 129 yards, 2 TD and 2 Fumbles inside the 5.

In 8 attempts in the games that matter, he came up with 1 truly great performance and 1 good/very good performance. Those were the biggest games and he rarely made a difference.

You can point to the team's record vs. MSU while he was at UM, but Sparty was 5-7, 5-6, 4-8 and 7-6 from 2004-07.

Great leader, great player...

I don't think he deserves first ballot status.

157 total carries 595 yds (6 TD) and 3.78 ypc and

74.3 yards/game  and .75 touchdowns. (on 19.65 carries)

Those are NOT awful numbers, especially considering as you point out it is against the cream of the crop.In one of the games he played hurt, and in others, he wasn't the only person that shit the bed. He also was 2-2 against Notre Dame, and 4-0 against MSU, 3-0 against PSU

You mention his 2 fumbles against Florida, he had 1 other (3total) on 1015 rushes.

If Mike Hart isn't a first ballot player, who is more deserving as a leader and player? Who is it that never had a bad game? Who else exceeded expectations quite like him (3* rivals)?

But I think that because Hart is on that ballot, it shows that Michigan has really fallen in its standing as an athletics program.

If you come to Michigan to play football, the biggest game of the year is against Ohio and Hart was 0-4 and its not like he lit up the Buckeyes and they just happened to come out on top. It's just hard for me to come to terms with that being one of the premier careers at Michigan but as people have pointed out, who else would you put up there?
