I don't believe it until the reporter has boobs

Looks like Nevada might be going too, per Rivals. http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/news?slug=ap-mountainwestexpansion

As a Fresno ex-pat with Fresno State being my second favorite college team., this is pretty cool.

MWC making some major moves. Lose BYU: gain Fresno St and Nevada. Works out pretty well as they gain 2 WAC powerhouses and help establish appearance of conference who should get auto BCS bid.
August 18th, 2010 at 11:34 PM ^
I believe you mean that they lost Utah.
August 18th, 2010 at 11:41 PM ^
They are losing both, AFAIK.
August 18th, 2010 at 11:50 PM ^
If the MNW gets Nevada and Fresno State (or at least Nevada), if Boise State leaves then the WAC is dead. If the WAC is dead then BYU has no home for its other sports, thus forcing it to stay in the MNW. The MNW could gain Nevada and Fresno State (strengthening its mid-level teams) and keep BYU (preserving its top-level team). We'll see what happens over the next few days and weeks.
Remember, Boise State hasn't actually left the WAC. If Nevada and Fresno State stay in the WAC and BYU leaves the MNW, then Boise might decide to stay in the WAC and the MNW could start to decline and eventually die.

I thought Boise State had already left for 2011?
August 19th, 2010 at 12:13 AM ^
Yikes, hadn't seen those rumors yet.

BYU is going independent in football and joining the WAC in all other sports.

They added Nevada and Fresno? On top of Boise? WOW. Auto-bid here we come--in the world of sarcasm and unicorns.
In all seriousity, they lost one of their two legit teams (Utah) and the other BYU, is considering leaving. Thos really doesn't change their mid-major status

...beget conference changes:
dennisdoddcbs Really, after Houston joins MWC and UTEP rejoins WAC doesn't CUSA start Big East raid? This could get reallllly interesting.
dennisdoddcbs Just filed MWC-WAC reax. It will be relevant for about 15 minutes or until CUSA begins raid on Big East. Delany then gets call from ND

Dennis Dodd is raving. Altogether, I think it's a great move by the MWC and Fresno State (Nevada too?), and my guess is that they might try to poach Houston, but I don't know how much APOCALYPSE there's going to be. IMO, the current BCS conferences wil be pretty unaffected.
August 18th, 2010 at 11:11 PM ^
I don't think CUSA could get any football school from the BE. Conferences can basically only raid lower conferences than themselves. We might have a low opinion of the BE but they're still higher in the pecking order than CUSA.

When Nevada and Fresno State were asked by reporters why they changed conferences, their repsonse was: Because our old conference was WAC!

...is very bad news for Wyoming, who will now be forced to put down a brown and yellow field in order to be recognizable on national television.
August 18th, 2010 at 11:58 PM ^
...will be known as "Turd Turf".
August 19th, 2010 at 12:02 AM ^
Yep, bad for them and their 3 fans
August 19th, 2010 at 12:01 AM ^
Well the WAC is pretty much irrelevant now.
August 19th, 2010 at 12:48 AM ^
...helps to preserve the BCS status quo (Frank the Tank).
SCENARIO D: BYU becomes a football independent and the BCS conferences extend the school a Notre Dame-type deal. With both Utah and BYU now within the BCS system, Sen. Hatch suddenly has a new-found love for the BCS bowls and Washington leaves college football alone entirely. Meanwhile, it cuts the legs out from under the MWC and any other viable non-AQ upgrade possibility.
I don’t know about you, but it looks like paying BYU a couple of million bucks per year as an independent under Scenario D in order to preserve a cartel of hundreds of millions of dollars, extinguish its most prominent opponent in Washington AND destroy the MWC’s chances of ever moving up to AQ status makes a whole lot of business and political sense if you’re running the BCS.

Nevada agreed to the $5 million buyout to stay in the WAC, but the school said it never signed the agreement. This should allow Nevada to leave without a penalty but likely will be a point of contention with the WAC.They don't even have their schools sign the contracts? Ouch.
