Sure seems that this goes way beyond Nasser, or even just athletes. A student waiting 117 days for a ruling on her accusation of sexual assault against an instructor? Students unable to even get appointments with rape crisis counselors, or getting turned away from a rape hotline? This is jiust really ugly stuff. Wrap together Nasser, the Izzo (Walton, Paine + Appling), Dantonio (4 rapes last year alone, plus the other stories coming out), and what appears to be a similar attitude about sexual violence across the entire campus, and this is just really bad.

Notice this huge story was broken wide open by Lansing State Journal and ESPN instead of the Izzo loving Detroit media. This crap Detroit newspaper was MIA when these assault cases first occurred.Several big Detroit sports stories have been broken by National rather local media.

Actually, it was an out of state newspaper, the Indianapolis Star, that broke the Nassar story. The Detroit Free Press has a much larger circulation than the Indianapolis Star, and the Detroit News has a similar circulation, yet it was a non-local paper that exposed Nassar and Michigan State. That should tell you something. How the Indy Star and Rachael Denhollander took down Larry Nassar

credit here, they've only jumped on the bandwagon once it go rolling.  For the last few years they've simply accepted MSU's answers and said "ok" and moved on.  Only now are they digging and with local access and local connections getting a deeper view into the issue.

The LSJ was asleep and almost as complicit to a certain degree, for not asking deeper questions or seeking deeper info.  To my knowledge the LSJ has no FOIA demands from MSU like other further afield news organizations have.

The Indy Star really did much of the intial leg work

"That praise was delivered with good reason. The story of Nassar's downfall started in August, 2016, with the Indianapolis Star and some good, old-fashioned local investigative reporting on Indianapolis-based USA Gymnastics. The Star's five-month investigation led to a major expose and then to a pivotal email from Rachael Denhollander, one of Nassar's victims. "Without that first Indianapolis Star story in August of 2016, without the story where Rachael came forward publicly shortly thereafter, he would still be practicing medicine, treating athletes and abusing kids," Povilaitis said."

I hate seeing this, but I'm glad to see it come to light. If we as a public want to help prevent this from continuing around the country, then we need to continue to be a receptive and outraged audience who refuse to stand for it. Part of me is getting tired of reading about it already, but the larger part knows we can play an important role in preventing this, and letting victims know we'll listen and be on their side if they come forward.

Sadly this is a huge story now but just like the PSU and Baylor stories another one comes along and they will be all but forgotten, this isn't fair to the victims. PSU has become the darling of college football the past 2 years. Sadly there will be more PSU, MSU's and Baylors's in the future

that after Justice is finally served to every last deserving person - this is the story that will remain. These brave women survivors are never going away, and the army that comes out of the darkness of fear and shame and isolation to join them will be more powerful than anything you have ever witnessed. Victims will forever be known as survivors and their voices will all be heard, and more justice will continue to be meted out. “Nobody listened and nobody believed us”’ is the resounding theme of all of this. That stops now. This is a warning for anyone in any position of power or authority that has either injured someone or looked the other way. The fear at this point should be very, very real. #TIME’S UP

Can’t imagine either ignoring or actively covering up a serious crime of any type. Even if coaches, administrators or others don’t have the morality to know they’re doing the wrong thing they should know that eventually they’ll get caught. But I suppose people in position ms of power are used to getting their way. I hope Izzo, D’Antonio and Simon, and anyone else involved join Nasser in prison.

The sad thing is I think some of these people thought they were doing the victims a favor by not letting it get out of hand. Because “they couldn’t handle it”. I think morally, this is how they’ve lived with themselves and it’s appalling. It’s systemic and needs to stop.

Espn was the shark here, fighting through the stonewalling and foia blockades. Now here come the bottom-feeding parasites, the local papers that have largely ignored this for more than a decade and are looking to save face and capitalize on the scraps left over from espn and eventually the AG. As far as MSU is concerned: the mills of the gods grind slowly, yet they grind exceedingly fine.

Is so appallingly deep and systemic. Fending off all investigations (and paying how much in associated legal bills) while at the same time denying victims the services they desperately need.....117 days to get assistance from a counselor?? The entire administration needs to go.

NCAA President Emmert. was warned in writing g of 37 cases at MSU in 2010.Unless you can name another school (besides PSU & Baylor) with a similar number of cases I suggest you shut your pie hole.

than the school, if that is even possible. It hasn't gotten as much attention yet, but I certainly hope someone important shines a light on this part of the story. It's true in other places, but this is their job, it's what we pay them for. If just 1 person had the balls* to stand up and be counted like the last 15 year old survivor we wouldn't be here talking about this today.

have been slow to get on board.  They are on board now, though, and will be attentive to all further developments.  Multiple national news outlets also on board. Special prosecutor appointed by the AG office.  Feds involved.

Multiple sports involved and not just the revenue sports.

Some outlets will focus more on USA gymnastics; although the sentence "employed by Michigan State University" will be impossible to avoid.

Don't know what the repercussions are to Dantonio and Izzo, except there will be something.  At the very least, a level of scrutiny that will make it impossible for them to continue doing things as they have been.

That son of a bitch has daughters of his own. I can’t begin to comprehend the type of person MD really is to not only allow this, but actively cover it up, and now lie about it to save face.

I don’t know if he’ll leave, or be removed, but there is a special place in hell for people like this.

An example must be made out of this situation. I just wish our MSU friends could see past athletics, and really understand how sad this is. Makes me sick seeing how many people are defending their coaches because “this probably happens everywhere”. So many things wrong with that...

Starts MSU @ Maryland game coverage with MSU scandal report.Until Izzo & Dantonio are good it looks like this will be how Networks cover MSU games.A PR nightmare to say the least.

throckman

MSU does not have a PR department.  They have a "Communications and Brand Strategy" department.

Seems telling when you are less interested in public relations and more interested in brand strategy.

(Note: At UM, it's "Media and Public Relations.")

They are both dead men walking. Seems like Izzo knows it. MD is too arrogant/stubborn/stupid to know it. But he will soon enough. This is a dirty snowball rolling down a mountain.

Press folk and some on here saying don’t jump to conclusions and “burn it all down”. However, didn’t otl report that both izzo and dantonio handled complaints themselves? If so, isn’t that a direct title IX violation?

throckman

January 28th, 2018 at 1:42 PM ^

Yes, and subsequent failure to report the incident is a Clery Act violation.

If this gets bad, MSU's receipt of Title IV funds (federal student financial aid) will be jeopardized.  No modern R1 university can function without Title IV funding.  I don't think the DoE, especially headed by DeVos, will kill the entire institution (and I don't think that's appropriate), but they could potentially make MSU implement very, very difficult and expensive changes in order to continue operating.

Contrast the tones of Dantonio's and Izzo's pressers last night - I think Izzo might have an idea of the gravity of the situation, but I don't think Dantonio gets it.

Not only that, but add in any local police complicity, and now we're looking at the state and possibly even the feds investigating East Lansing law enforcement agencies broadly, not just MSU narrowly.

Did you notice how quickly the mayor of East Lansing moved to make a statement on this whole sordid affair?  And was one of the first to call on the whole MSU BoT to resign?  (https://www.lansingstatejournal.com/story/news/local/2018/01/25/east-la…)

I bet he's concerned the Michigan AG's investigation, in the process of turning over every rock on campus, starts turning over rocks in East Lansing, too.

The sad thing is that all this stuff about MSU’s athletic department has been known for a long time. They have been sweeping this stuff under the rug for a long time and everyone seemed fine with that. It took the Nasser scandal for the powers that be to decide that now it’s a problem.

GoBlueTom

Perhaps I'm wrong but feels like clear violations of the act, EMU was with Laura Dickinson case if I remember correctly had to pay 2.5 million dollars but and PSU was with their scandal.

I've actually never had the hate for Izzo that some do, and particularly in his prime he was an outstanding coach, but all of this for me confirms that Dantonio's chip on the shoulder, his thin-lipped sneer, and his constant obsessive trolling of Michigan means that he is exactly the consummate dickhead we always thought he was. Good riddance Mork, and don't worry, as somebody on here brilliantly predicted, Ohio State will probably offer you a job next week.

I hope I never hear that phrase again. "Protect the brand" is a line that is repeated numerous times in the article. The idea is good - don't do something stupid to tarnish the brand, but the folks in charge and the athletes took it to mean don't admit to anything. The new messaging should be, "protect the innocent, protect the powerless, protect your students."

Njia

January 28th, 2018 at 2:22 PM ^

What amazes me is how often people mistakenly believe that "protecting the brand" compels them to do the opposite of "the right thing." The brand will always suffer far worse - and longer lasting - damage when cover-ups (inevitably) come to light.
