Braylon Edwards returns to Michigan for degree

Ann Arbor — Braylon Edwards was living in Chicago last fall, in a comfort zone with so many Michigan alums in the area, when he had a moment of realization while watching an NFL game on a Sunday afternoon

“I said, ‘All right, look, I’m 33, I’ve got to get back home,’ ” Edwards said. “I knew it was time to focus. It’s time to find that drive. You’re 33, what’s going to be your final signature on this world?”

Edwards currently is taking four classes at Michigan and has an internship in the athletic department...

“Michigan has always been Michigan,” Edwards said. “We are the leaders and the best, but in the last four, five years, you’ve seen the transcendence of where Michigan is going in terms of the national spotlight. You look at the football program, you look at the architectural design and obviously (Michigan football coach Jim) Harbaugh is the talk of the town on so many levels and what the Ross School of Business is doing, you’re lucky to be here.

“It’s not easy. I’d be lying if I told you my classes are easy. These kids are intelligent, they’re smart, they work hard, the professors are amazing at what they do. To be here is a special thing, and I see why people are excited and passionate about whatever they do here.

Edwards blends in on campus wearing a Michigan hoodie and hat, and when he’s not going to class or studying or attending meetings as part of his internship, he’s at the football building giving advice to some of the current Michigan receivers, including early-enrollee freshmen Donovan Peoples-Jones and Tarik Black.

“The other day I was watching film with Maurice Ways and helping him, saying....

Thought about that afterwards.  Don't want to take their livelihood from them.

I have:

1) trimmed down the copied content

2) left the last sentence a teaser

3) encouraged them to read the full article

4) ensured that the link works directly, instead of having to copy and paste web address.

I mean, if you leave, can you just re-enroll 10 years later for more classes, or do you have to re-apply for admission?

I always am amazed with what I see my friend's kids go through when they apply to UM.  I don't know that '91 JFW gets into '17 UM. In fact, I'm pretty sure he doesn't get accepted.

All that said, way to go Braylon. That's fantastic.

Congratulations on making a great decision. For a professional athlete such as yourself to end your professional playing career and then enroll in classes to get your degree speaks volumes as you who you really are and your values. Just like Emmitt Smith and others... football isn't everything. #GoBlue

An NFL first-rounder who played nine years in the league now back on campus finishing his degree and mentoring current team members. If that's not a role model I guess I don't know the definition of that term.

I hope and suspect Braylon has taken care of his NFL money (including his endowed scholarship and aside from that Bentley he bought soon after signing with the Browns and in which he drove Lloyd Carr around the campus :>). Between his invested NFL income and his pension he should be set financially; now at age 33 he's ready to get on with the rest of his life. And to to that he recognizes he needs to complete his studies for a UM degree.

We all hope those young guns with NFL aspirations currently on M's roster take careful note and learn from this really exceptional example.
