META: Reminder to keep politics off this board

Submitted by theytookourjobs on

[Ed-Seth: To reiterate our policy: No poltiics. Yes, even in threads marked for deletion, because sometimes our mods can't get to them.

When something political is relevant to Michigan/college sports sometimes it can't be avoided, but in those cases we will have moderators watching the threads carefully, and those who go beyond the discussion of the issue and how it's relevant to Michigan/college sports will get moderated and often end up in Bolivia or banned.

Why do we have this policy? Because we're mercantile shits who know politics on the board is bad for business, that's why. If there is something that you feel very strongly about, there are many places to discuss them with people of different opinions. When you do so here, nobody's minds are changed, and people who see it tend to come away triggered and unhappy, and feel less comfortable about coming to our site and engaging. That means less revenue for us. Also a less nice board to have intelligent and relevant discussion about Michigan and college sports.]

So do we have rules on this or not, because what's going on lately on the board is garbage.  People hijacking threads they think are getting deleted and posting insanely one sided statements is just gross.  This site is one of the things I look forward to every day.  Most of us don't give a fuck about anybody else's political views and there are rules on this board that support that.  So are these rules being enforced or not?

MGoBlog is not the only place on the internet suffering from a "spillover" of political commentary. These other sites are also places you'd never expect to hear it. We are not in normal times.

Yeah, I shouldn't have resonded to the guy who went on his rant. That's definitely my bad and I deserve the negs. However, so does he. Don't pos bang someone just because you agree with him on politics when there is supposed to be a specific rule against that.

I don't know what the "wet the bed" thread is or why it is political unless it is a reference to the Russian hookers, but it should be deleted as it is garbage.  The OP of this thread is correct that it should be deleted, but lighten up a bit.

Thinking that sports and politics should be separated all times and under all circumstances is naive.  But, there are many places you can go to discuss the overlap intelligently.  Purely on the level of directing traffic, this site has set a policy of no politics.  It's about the kind of community we want to create.  That community is not "superior" to any other kind of community where hypothetically we might talk about politics and Michigan sports, a lot.  But this community established a specific space for certain kinds of conversations, and fans should have the option of going to that space when they want.

I hope we all understand that even on this principle we are not going to get perfection.  There will always be grey zones, e.g. systemic misbehavior by certain programs or the NCAA, or voicing an opinion on candidates in the Univ of Michigan Regents election because of concerns about the Athletic Department's leadership.  Also, as human beings we will slip up from time to time.  I think theytookourjobs and boliver46 were right to express their concerns about a trend.  However, I hope we will not get into an umbrage competition over every perceived "political" statement.

We are all fans of Michigan athletics.  Let's remember that and look for ways to enjoy our unity.

Being a hard-right leaning Canadian millenial, I'm used to everyone disagreeing with my opinion.  If I want to talk politics, I find other avenues to do so.  That being said, I don't think we have to have a hissy-fit every time someone makes a Trump or Obama remark.

Let's thicken up the ole hide folks.

But exactly what threads have been hijacked lately? Not really sure where this unfounded point is coming from?

Yeah, I've seen snarky political comments on some threads, but nothing's ever really been hijacked to the point where it has become a screaming match between the left and the right.

I'm with Uncle Leo here. Yes, some people have made political asides here and there, but I don't think the board has been inundated. This thread is by far the most political (and, to some degree, most vitriolic) because rather than a few scattered comments it is the subject of an intense debate about what is and is not appropriate.

Based on the number of comments, the OP has obviously struck a nerve--and I think (inadvertantly) illustrated why the "no politics" rule is important, even if it is inconsistently enforced.

It seems like its the meeting place for everyone to cry about everything now. I suggest if you want to talk about a man winning an election that you don't like .You should run for congress or  a Senate seat and make changes to the system or let the Chinese take over and not have any elections.
