Having silent recruits is usually for a mixture of three reasons:

 

  1. The kid wants to make a splash at his own press announcement/high school hat ceremony;
  2. The coach/recruiting staff want to create a certain drumbeat of momentum at a certain point in the recruiting cycle (either to get them through a dry spell by announcing a kid already in the bag or creating just a floodgate of announcements at a key point to tip other kids);
  3. The kid would be under pressure from friends/community to go to another major school & doesn't want to reveal his true choice until the very end so he doesn't have deal with the blowback for very long.

I could easily see Harbaugh lining up December as a "big splash" month in order to create a tipping point for the other top targets who are going to wait until January/NSD for their decisions.  And if we are going to pull a kid from an Alabama or other top program or region of the country, I could see #3 being a good reason to have silent kids too.

FWIW, Wiltfong also said Michigan was done recruiting Oliver Martin because "they are filled up at WR".

If we landed those 4 and missed on DPJ (which I don't think we will) and Harris (I give 50-50 at best), it's still one of our best recruiting classes ever. This would be huge if they fall our way, add these two and we seriously cooking with gas and Solomon can jump on board with his mom or not, I don't even care.
