Better look at the matte helmets

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

At first I didn't like it, but once they got out of the dark room and I saw this......WOW!

Love it. The second one is my new lock screen on my iphone.

The new #2 also looks good on the sleeves from afar.

of the uniforms.  Normal and neutral lighting.

Would be interesting to see these photos compared to some neutral/normsl lighting photos of the 2015 uniforms and also compared to photos of the 1997 uniforms.

My gut tells me that the maize hue in the above photos lies somewhere in-between the 2015 (darker) maize and 1997 (slightly lighter) maize.

Hard to judge without seeing them live at Michigan Stadium.

but it is probaby also true that one could curate and carefully select some photos from 2015 and 1997 that capture the hues actually observed with the human eye in those years.

The above photo from 2015 makes the maize look lighter than it actually was in 2015.  And lookie there...the blue on the undershirt renders darker than the blue on the jersey.

Logical conclusion, if not sourced. Have you seen the uniforms in person?

Nike's promotion fluff suggests that there is an alteration of the color, which implies that it is different from last year (though they may be fluffing themselves and actually referring to the old "Sun" color).

It's not. They are different. The may say it's the same number on the color wheel, but this years maize is lighter. I have season tickets and last years uniform was even darker in person.

I hope this is true.  At first glance, the new Nike color looks brighter.  It looks better.

The dark orangy yellow from last year when combined with our dark blue, made the jerseys look purple-y like they do in the picture above.

I was at games last year as well and they look marginally brighter from photos, if that.

We haven't seen these in person yet. I'll report back when I get my jersey on Saturday.

Nike's Amarillo is PMS 7406 C, which comes out to 255-203-5 on the RGB scale.

On the BBQ front, preliminary weather reports say that after a hot & rainy Friday, this weekend should be pretty damned spectacular for the recruits.  Sunny, lower humidity and a high of 82 degrees Saturday-Monday (the BBQ is being split up into two events, one on Saturday & one on Monday).

Good gracious...

It's like yesterday was December 25th and the spolied kiddos are bored with their new toys on the 26th and want more.

Fuck.  Can actual football start to happen?!?!?!?!?!

WVU did an all yellow uniformz a bit ago.  I don't think it looked bad per se but I don't think Michigan needs to be gimmicky either.  The uniforms from yesterday are fine.  If they try to keep evolving it, we're going into Costume U (Oregon) territory.

I'm of two minds about it.

1. When Oregon first debuted "lighting yellow" uniforms at Mississippi State in the 2003 season opener, (with what was then their only helmet, green) I thought it was pretty cool. I think there is a way that Michigan could wear a maize jersey with the regular helmet and look pretty good. Either maize or white pants would look interesting.

2. Michigan's home uniforms are the best in football. Even if a different look might actually look good, it does not follow that Michigan should actually try it. I think the same uniform should be worn for every home game. And I really like the idea of just having one consistent uniform (perhaps switching up the maize and white pants on the road occasionally) for the whole year, all 15 games.

So I guess if something occurred I would oppose it, but I would be more likely to accept it if Michigan were not at home when they wore the "special" uniform. A perfect, non-heretical opportunity to do this would be to debut a maize jersey when another team elected to wear white at home, though to date Michigan has not been in this situation and has no games scheduled against either LSU or Georgia Tech.

I could see Nike trying to do this for a color-vs-color match against Florida. Not sure I would want to see it. Plus, Michigan and Florida actually look really good together in their regular uniforms--the 2007 (1/1/08) Cap One Bowl was one of the most aesthetically pleasing football games I have ever watched just from an appearance standpoint, beyond the aggressive gameplan and glorious victory.

Can't do any more apparel talk. They can play in pink dresses for all I care.

To be honest, in the past years, I don't remember nearly this discussion about uniforms, symbols, helmets, branding, etc.

With all the crap some of the past uniforms got (bumblebee), no one would have said a word if they were winning in them.

Uh......I've been posting obscure equipment updates and changes for about 4 years now.

Socks, pads, facemasks, bumper logos. This is nothing new.

I think there's a reason we've adopted some of WD's uniform obsessiveness, albeit not at the same level.

You're right we didn't care this much several years ago.  Somebody the other day posted the original two short threads on the blog when Adidas revealed their new uniforms back in 2008.  The thread was pretty preliminary and not too controversial, but there's three reasons for that:

  1. First, like being early in the dating cycle, Adidas hid the crazy stuff from us at first.  The home jerseys were pretty basic and the maize/yellow piping on the away jerseys were pretty basic (as far as Adidas standards go).

  2. Second though, is as time went by and Adidas got progressively worse, fans who are otherwise ambivalent towards uniforms started paying attention as the Adidas uniforms started to get too garish to ignore even for casual fans.  Basically fans are content that the uniforms are fine and none of their business----until it becomes their business because the things get so damned bad.

  3. Thirdly, as Michigan as a program really started to declineon the playing field, even the casual fan started looking at the entire program with a more critical eye--things that are normally allowed to slide suddenly came under more scrutiny.  When you mar the helmet by putting numbers on the side of them, or issuing bumble bee uniforms, it isn't that bad if you're posting up an epic comback against Notre Dame in UTL or posting an otherwise great season from 2011.  When we start failing to even get to a bowl game, not so much.  Uniforms became a concrete symbol of something abstract that went horribly wrong.

As others have said, half the reason for the big party at the Nike rollout the other day was it partially symbolized what went so wrong during the Dark Years.  I see this is a as a three phase deal:  coaching, tradition (symbolized by the uniforms), and on field performance.  Hiring Harbaugh was step one in returning to greatness, fixing the uniforms was step two, and the third step is simply creating a consistently solid on field performance.

No one is forcing you to read any thread you don't want to and certainly no one is forcing you to further waste your time by participating in them.  Your disdain for a particular thread isn't so compelling to the rest of us that we require your written expression of your disdain.  Your absence from a thread is enough.  Look, I get where you're coming from.  Maybe two thirds of the threads on this board bore the crap out of me and/or I find them superfluous or frivolous, but I simply ignore them, and I certainly don't waste my time commenting within them that I don't like them.  Leave the topic to those who do want to participate.  Its easy, just move on.
