Rutgers -- Believes There is an Ongoing Beef Between Flood and Harbaugh

Submitted by MLaw06 on

Rutgers' beat writers believe that there is a beef between Flood and Harbaugh.  I'm sure Harbaugh couldn't care less about Flood, but apparently, the Rutgers side thinks that Harbaugh was running up the score (even though he put in all the backups with 11 minutes left in the 4th quarter).  They've likened it to the Carroll/Harbaugh and Schwartz/Harbaugh spats, however, this seems to be one of those stories that are just in their minds and Harbaugh doesn't care about Flood.  Michigan simply wanted to shut Rutgers down and they did so in the second half - strictly business.

Harbaugh said his decision was influenced solely by the two-point conversion chart, which seemed disingenuous considering the size of Michigan's lead and the amount of time remaining in the game. Harbaugh's true motive was later revealed by his players, who said he was incensed by trash talk from Rutgers players on the way into the locker room at halftime.

Flood was asked about the situation Sunday on his weekly postgame teleconference.

"I think if there's something Coach Harbaugh wants me to know, then he'll say it to me," Flood said. "The other stuff, I won't comment on."

In addition, Flood apparently tried to poke fun at Harbaugh by saying that the deceptive trick play that was called back was ironic because John Harbaugh lost to the Pats due to a trick play.  Apparently, Flood gets to take credit for the Pats somehow (because a few Rutgers' former players are on the Pats??  Uhh, have they heard about Tom Brady??)...

Flood was asked about a play late in the first half when Michigan tight end Jake Butt appeared to substitute out of the game, but instead lined up along the sideline. No Rutgers defender noticed Butt and he was wide-open for a pass from Jake Rudock for a big gain. But the play was called back and Michigan was assessed an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for "intent to deceive."

Asked about the play after the game, Flood made an interesting reference.

"I didn't think it was legal," Flood said. "I thought the officials did a good job officiating the play and to some degree, maybe some irony with what happened with his brother in the playoffs last year with New England and Baltimore, maybe."

Jim Harbaugh's brother, John, is the head coach of the Baltimore Ravens. The New England Patriots, who happen to have a strong Rutgers pipeline, used an unusual — but legal — formation to confound the elder Harbaugh brother in last season's NFL playoffs. The play had absolutely nothing to do with the Rutgers-Michigan game, so it was interesting that Flood decided to mention an embarrassing moment for one Harbaugh brother moments after losing to the other brother's team by 33 points.

Harbaugh was pissed at the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and Rutgers players trash talking our players as the team went into the locker room at the half, so he took it out on a weak defense.

I seriously doubt Harbaugh gives Flood, or Rutgers, more than 2 seconds of thought (outside of this past week and the game). One cannot have a "beef" with someone about whom one does not think.

At the end of the day, the clear message from Harbaugh was: if you're trash talking us, I guess you think you can play with the big boys. See if you can handle us, then, and we'll see who's laughing at the end of this game.

Clearly, Rutgers cannot play with the big boys. You don't get to participate in Big Ten rivalries until you can perform at a higher level than dumpster fire.

Sorry -- might be harsh, but it's true.

Flood and crew were at the Easton Harbaugh HS camp this past Summer, so apparently they were friendly then.

I'm also pretty sure that Chris Partridge was offered the same job at Rutgers (and may have accepted the offer) until he changed his mind and went to Michigan. Then Rutgers leaked that they backed off Partridge because he wasn't liked by a lot of NJ HS coaches (clearly not true). Maybe that caused/ fueled the feud?

Somehow I doubt Flood will have much of a chance to really start this "rivalry" because he won't be the coach at Rutgers next year. I mean, does he really think his team meets the mark or grades out well? Oh yeah, grades haven't mattered much to this guy. Something about academic fraud...

Harbaugh has a heart full of hate for most people, but an especially large amount of hate for certain folks. If you're the sort that sees Ideal Michigan as a band of Warrior Monks, I could see that bothering you. It doesn't bother me though.

Like 99% of the stuff about Harbaugh is positive with no qualifications. The other 1% is maybe negative if you're of a certain disposition, but it's just what you've got to accept to get that other 99% of awesome. He's a red assed crazy person who has insane feuds with people and tries to carve their hearts out.

As far as Flood goes, he's a cheater, and a clumsy one at that. His players he is in charge of mentoring have been out of control jerks and worse. His AD is a joke and an abusive bully. His university being in the Big 10 is a joke. Yeah, I think it's great that Jim Harbaugh wants to destroy that dude and run him out of coaching. Get him, Jim. Run his ass out of town.

is that they are proud because they think they pissed Harbaugh off? May being Rutgered needs to become a new level of disrespect far beneath even the MSU disrespect and much more deserved.

This would be funny if it wasn't so sad. Has Things for Flood got so desperate that he has to try the Dantonio act?

Maybe Flood should worry more about why all the talented in-state players want nothing to do with his dumpster fire that masquerades as a football program.

It's been mentioned, but I think Michigan wanted to look dominate l to keep the momentum in NJ recruiting. Also, after the "intent to deceive" penalty I believe Harbaugh wanted to show an "intent to kick ass". I don't think it had anything to do with Flood. Honestly, I'm not sure Jim could pick Kyle Flood out in a lineup. He just doesn't matter.

I was at the game in Jersey when they stormed the field.  Ugly campus.    The fans were "Jersey Rude"... I just thought to myself, well just wait until they come to our place... we'll show them good sportsmanship combined with a bit of class.

And at the game on Saturday, I saw the rudest behavior from visiting fans that I have ever seen... I actually had to tell the lady next to me that her 7 year old boy shouldn't be sitting in the isle seat because of what might go down....  Shooting their mouths off with a stream of expletives that made me wonder if they would be able to speak without them...  : (

This against the reaction I had at the Maryland game this year... WOW!  Good sports AND classy, nice campus... will go back.

I already really, really dislike that place... Uggg

Just take all their recruits...

PS:  The number #1 team that ALL of Mahattan and a portion of Brooklyn routs for is MICHIGAN!

We Flood-ed their defense with points, that's what he's bothered by, too fucking bad, this from a guy who was suspended 3 games and is lucky to still have a job.

They were gifted many of the points they scored, for this guy to bitch about anything is mind boggling, all the creative officiating and they still lost by 33.

Hey Flood, have a nice bowl of STFU and GTFO!!!

Obvious to me that Harbaugh's game plan was about the next three games, as much as it was about beating Rutgers.

He wanted to build up Rudock's and the team's confidence. Check.
He wanted to establish the passing game.  Check.
He wanted to give future opponents (especially you-know-who) something to worry about a little, and have to spend practice time on. Double Check.

All in the safe, cozy laboratory called Michigan Stadium (as opposed to the next couple of games on the road).

I saw the Rutgers players jawing all game long ...  standing over players after tackles and running their mouths after every play.

When we went for 2pts in the 3rd the first thing I said was "Harbaugh is shoving it up their cornhole for all the trash talk and BS!"

This was before the article about the halftime tunnel trash talk and halftime speeches.

I just chalk it up to Jersey being a shit hole and the players on Ruters being the leftovers once MICHIGAN and PENN STATE get done recruiting their state.
