Taysom Hill to Michigan?

Submitted by DISCUSS Man on

Brian and Ace on MGoRadio talked about the possibility of byu injured QB Taysom Hill transferring to Michigan.

it starts at 04:11 of segment 6.

if you can't listen to it, basically they're saying it's possible and that they've heard things themselves from people out in Provo on top of reading things on the pay sites about it being in motion.

If he had linked to some media company's article with the same thought, he certainly wouldn't have been negged so much.  But he was clearly violating everyone with all this independent thinking for himself and wanting to bounce his ideas regarding Michigan football off other Michigan fans.  We can't have that here -- we need confirmation from a professional media source that an idea is an acceptable discussion topic first.  Gotta keep your own original thoughts stashed away in your head where they belong.

this.  If it is true then our QBs are not being developed.  We have like 10 QBs on our roster and a highly rated true frosh coming in.  We should not have to keep borrowing from other people.

So wanting a heisman candidate QB to possibly come play for us means no other QBs are developing?? I don't know if you know this or not, but getting really good players to come play for you regardless of how good your current players are is never a bad thing.

Board is really big on hyperbole lately.  Everything is "the greatest" or "one of the best of all time."  He played one game this year, he got hurt, again.  Nobody has any idea if he is a "heisman level" QB.  I would rather have one of the young quarterbacks we already have play and play well.

How is it hyperbole when he literally was an early heisman candidate, based on his play last season, at the beginning of this year? Sure he got hurt, that's definitely something to consider, however adding another lottery ticket just ups your odds of hitting - even if he ends up not being the starter- and if he wanted to come I'd have a hard time seeing why not give him a shot, even considering the injury issues.

Yes adding another lottery ticket increases your chances of winning.
But let's call the 85 scholarship limit a "budget" if you will... you don't have any peanut butter, bread or juice boxes in your grocery cart yet, and the kids need food. And for goodness sake there's some people coming over to watch the game and there's no BEER in the cart yet!
Unfortunately you're nearing the end of your budget - should you still toss a couple more Lotto or scratchers in the cart, or take care of those other items?
Now - because maybe you don't have kids, or drink beer, or just don't like analogies - let's replace peanut butter & bread with speedy receivers, and juice boxes & beer with pass rushing DE.
NOW you see the reason not to blow the entire budget on lottery tickets, right?!

to replace Cook?

It would be absolutely shocking if our QBs who are sitting behind Rudock are being developed to the level of Taysom Hill. If your goal is to field as good a team as possible next year, you want Hill as an option. If your goal is to build a team for the future, then why even consider playing Morris or O'Korn next season? Play a freshman and take some lumps. Do it this year too.

We're not rebuilding. Harbaugh has shown we have the talent to win now. Expect him to do what he can to do so.

Zero percent chance of that happening.

He's married. Ann Arbor is one of the top-10 cities in America to raise a family.

Plus, Harbaugh. He has a relationship with Harbaugh going back to when he was in high school which was a long time ago given he's 25 and signed with Stanford in 2009 before opting out due to Stanford's early enrollment policy.

Come on! Next year's roster will have six qb's. We were desperate for a starter this year. I find it hard to imagine that the staff thinks they can't find a starter among Morris, O'Korn, Gentry, Malzone and Speight. Logically three of those five are the more likely candidates but Gentry and O'Korn are actually QB's that Harbaugh brought in. I find it hard to believe.

O'Korn is already ahead of Morris and would probably be starting over Rudock this year. Brian and Ace actually talked about him on their radio show yesterday. He had over 3,000 yards passing as a true freshman and came from St. Thomas Aquinas, which was voted as the third best high school athletic program in the nation. The kid has the pedigree to be a great QB.

I'm not sure about Malzone or Gentry, but if Harbaugh is going after Hill, it tells me that he wants a proven QB on his roster. Next year is very important and if O'Korn goes down, we basically have zero QB's with actual playing experience. Would you feel comfortable going into EL or Columbus playing a freshman QB?

That doesn't make sense. He doesn't need to redshirt this year to transfer. He'd have to sit out a year either way, so he'd either lose a year of eligibility or redshirt to preserve his final year then. Whether he redshirted or not this year, he'll be a 5th year senior when he's eligible to play somewhere else.

sitting out the year before a transfer is equivalent to sitting out a year after transfer according to the rules?

If that were the case, then couldn't back-up players who never see the field just transfer and play right away?

If Morris is on path to graduate after this year, then the redshirt gives him two years of playing eligibility as a grad transfer.   That's a better deal than transfer and sit out a year to redshirt and have only one year to play ball and it's a better deal than dropping down to FCS level or lower for immediate eligibilty as well.

If I'm Morris, I take the redshirt see what happens during Spring Ball, get some tape of me playing during the Spring game out there for other coaches to analyze and then if I don't like my chances of getting the starting job call it a day and no harm no foul.  Seems like a pretty good situation to me.

You're wrong there Maize Cab - if Morris doesn't play in '15 he retains 2 years of eligibility. He doesn't lose a year of eligibility by transferring - it'd just be a year until he can play if he goes to another FBS school.
So by then it'd be nearly 3 years since the Minnesota game, and 5+ since his Jr year of HS, last time he started a full season.
For this reason I expect he stays and tries to win the starting job in '16, then does the graduate transfer year if that doesn't succeed.
His best option may be try FCS though... no sitting a year then.

What you're saying doesn't make sense. It would indeed be a year until he can play if he goes to another FBS school, but if he's redshirting this year at M then he loses a year of eligibility while sitting out at the school he transfers to. Unless he's graduating in 3 years and leaving as a grad transfer.

No, it's not ridiculous. Taysom Hill is a QB that could lead us to a National Championship next year if he made it through a healthy season, and that's not hyperbole. I like O'Korn and everyone else we have, but if you have the opportunity to take a guy of Hill's calibur you do it, no questions asked.
