Derrick Green playing better?

Submitted by Commie_High96 on
He looked good in the 2nd half. Is he finally getting how to take what the Oline gives him and not get knocked over by the slightest breadth from a linebacker? Or was this just garbage time against an NU team that already had paced it in?

a great job rotating the RBs.  I was shocked to see Ty in the game but I guess Coach wants to give him another chance.  #ToughLove

Finally discipline and the depth to make it work.

"fresh leg" RB to bring out in the 4th Q when there is a lead and its time to burn the clock is like the rich getting richer.  Granted there are a few choices but I don't ever recall Green fumbling the football. Im probably wrong but its rather distant in my memory 8-)

He's running much more decisively for the past few weeks, and his straight ahead freight-train speed looks good when he can do that.  He doesn't need much space to make it through with the weight he carries.

Conversely, the freight train has difficulty changing holes.  We even saw that today when the hole was stuffed, and Green just doesn't have the quick feet to change and go significantly in another direction.

As long as the o-line is good enough for Green to run with a "guess-the-hole-and-go" style, he'll be good.  And there is value to having a (relatively) fast, lumbering Green get into the secondary quickly.

Green ran his hardest that he has ever done in a Winged Helmet today.  Someone must have gotten to him and lit a fire under his ass.  Maybe Coach Wheatley.

Thats said...Green is still not the number 1, or number 2 back on the roster.

1) It was late in the game and NW was very worn down.  Michigan was opening holes for Green and he is a back that NEEDS a hole.  He can not create much on his own.

2) When he got his hole, he ran hard and finally broke some tackles and carried some people.

It was encouraging to see him run...but Im not ready to annoit him yet.  He simply is not quick enough to be a full time RB.  He is a solid piece of the rotation behind Smith & Johnson.

You wanna crown his ass...then crown his ass..but he is what we thought he is.  :)  an ode to denny green

The nice thing is - even with so many backs getting carries - that nobody put the ball on the carpet.  Beautiful.

the opponents away from the line with its LBs, Ruddock is a bit of a threat and we can actually utilize our backs. Also the threat of a quick FB hand off gives the hb's a little more space to. It's those little things that add up.

Better yes, but his skill set is still limited. He's 3rd string at best. He just doesn't have the ability to run through arm tackles or outrun anyone. I like him to give Smith and Johnson a breather once in a while, but he's not a feature back.

I was suprised to see Higgie get some carries.  He has some speed.

I think Green did look better.

It was a monster win yesterday.  I bet teams that have to come to the big house are worried.

at the game in AA yesterday, what a day! To the derrick green Q. Yes he looked better! picked holes had that lateral hop, showed some acceleration. he showed a glimmer that he may yet be the 5 star back we expected.

But I'd also attibute a lot of it to the good work by the line.

He's a bulldozer though.

Also shoutout to Sione Houma. He brings a smile everytime he touches the ball

I think the credit goes mainly to the O-Line. DG still succumbs to ankle tackles and instead of falling forward for an extra yard he has a maddening tendency to go sideways. Casual observation is that he was running harder yesterday.
