Nice fall weather now predicted for Maryland game

Submitted by SugarShane on
Chances of rain below 20% now. It will be windy, peaking at 20mph, but that's it. Temperature will be upper 50s and cloudy. Seems actually like nice fall weather. ( Will edit out my opinions on the matter to leave this as objective good news)

1 pm update has weather.com, accuweather.com, and wunderground.com all showing no rain from noon to three.  All three, however, show rain before and after, particularly in the evening. Capital Weather Gang, which is the only one clearly focused on DC area weather, is still indicating a chance of occasional showers during the noon to three period.

I may be mistaken, but I think their biggest concern may be flooding and erosion (as in road wash-outs, etc...), considering the amount of rain they've had already, and will continue to get from the hurricane. At least we still get to see the game played....

Indeed, the flooding is a big issue. Some areas already are handing out sand bags. I think one safety concern was having people driving home at midnight with roads potentially having high water that might not be noticed until too later. Also I suspect Michigan wanted to make sure its players, coaches, etc., got out of Dodge sooner rather than too late.

the riled up atmosphere that Maryland was going for with there hyped up "Black Out" night game.  Not that it would of effected us too much but I look at that as a plus for us.

In terms of risk reward, they probably made the right decision.  As people have pointed out, you go based on the information that you have at the time.  At the time it looked like Hurricane Joaquin would impact the east coast much more significantly than it does currently as her track keeps moving more and more out to sea.

And if you're going to make the call, you need to give people (especially those traveling to the game) time to adjust or cancel their plans.

And we've been getting rain every day for ~2 weeks now.  Been really wet, and there is a trough of moisture which will continue to soak the eastern seaboard for a good while.  I think that the biggest reason for fear was Joaquin's potential interaction with this system.

Massive overreaction?  Probably not.  There are a great deal of logistics to consider here, and at some point, waiting is not an option.  Think about this, should UM leave at noon on Friday or 5pm on Friday.  5pm is better so that students can go to classes, but noon might be necessary to ensure a timely arrival at the team hotel (which is MORE important for a noon game than an 8pm game.)  There are other concerns too.  Fans making plans (cuz we're important too).  TV crews.  etc.  We are talking about a small city which will be directly affected by when the game time is.

Any one know the orientation of the field? Winds will be from the east at 20 to 30 MPH with higher gusts! If the filed is N-S there could be quite a cross wind!
