Questions about the Michigan Stadium experience

Submitted by mich_hockey_6 on
I haven't had a chance to attend a game yet this year, so I haven't had a chance to see what has changed and what hasn't. Obviously, the RAWK music is still running rampant. Some of this has already been covered in previous threads, so I'll just ask the questions I haven't seen answered (or missed). -Are water bottles still prohibited? -Have they removed the ads from the concourse? -Is the student section a hybrid between GA and assigned seating or has it been returned to the same set-up as before Dave Brandon broke everything? What other input do MGoBloggers have as far as fixing the game day experience at Michigan Stadium (aside from just winning, because, of course we want to win)?

A bit better today. I agree with the others (less obnoxious RAWK) but we really need to retire "C'Mon Feel the Noise". Wave was well executed and they did a nice intro for the Drumline which was great.

Totally forgot about the purse rule... Had to tuck it into my pants and go through the next gate. Student section was disappointing. Students would rather keep drinking than sober up and watch football. Play calling was extremely vanilla.

Glad you cleared up the purse issue...people were talking.

I've been to Michigan Stadium well over a hundred times....the student section was not full, not even close.

Everything else was fine.  I'm theee to see a football game and a little bit of rawk music....wouldn't even notice.  On balance, the Stadium looks great as was the gametime experience.

I'm right in the front row right on the edge of the student section (near the upright) which is where the wave will almost always start if it is attempted. At about the 4 minute mark of the third quarter at a break, I turned to my friend and asked relativelly casually if this would be a good time to try and start the wave (unilke most students, I understand that the wave should only be attempted during a blowout, and I judged the 21-0 score to be enough of one given how pathetic UNLV was looking offensively).

My friend responded in the affirmative, and then the girl standing next to me (who I didn't know) also agreed and said we should start the wave. We both said it a few more times with a bit more volume, then in a hard-to-describe fashion, other people in the vicinity began kind of chanting off-beat "wave, wave, wave" which swelled a bit until it was clear that it was time to start the wave. At this point, a couple people literally right next to the aisle started the count, and after only a couple failed attempts, it was off to the races.

As a senior who has been to almost every game, I'm almost 100% certain I've never seen a more perfectly executed Big House-wide wave. The entire stadium was totally into it, and it went exactly as planned: two run-throughts around the stadium, a brilliant slowdown wave, a fast wave, a perfectly-executed reverse wave that left our section in shock that it actually worked, and then a split wave that was so successful we weren't even sure what we were supposed to do since it was so rare to ever get that far.

And of course, it all came back to my offhand comment to my friend that perhaps this would be a good time to start the wave - who knows if it would have happened if I hadn't said anything. It was easily one of my proudest moments as a Michigan student. No doubt I'll be telling my grandchildren about the time I started the most successful wave of my era as a student (and the first successful complete wave in the Jim Harbaugh era).

What a moment.

Yeah it was definitely unfortunate that we shut down the band horse song so perhaps it could have waited a bit. Overall though I think it helped that the conditions were perfect: you had an almost-full Big House, game was getting kind of boring, absolutely perfect weather (so the crowd was energized), and in hindsight it was a good time to start the wave since very little happened in-game over the next 5-10 minutes.

However, I will certainly keep in mind the timing if I am ever so fortunate to once again be placed in the enviable position of domino-starting a Big House wave.

I too agree.
I generally bring the family once a year. Yes. There was piped in music, but I think it was ok. In general it feels like there are longer breaks than previously experienced (either due to TV or my imagination). The marching band plays A LOT during the game. There is about a 5-7 min gap after kickoff and after halftime (as the band files in and gets settled). There is certainly music throughout the game, but the band/piped in music was pretty in balance.

I hope they reverse the water bottle ban, and frankly I won't go to a game until i can bring my own water to my seat.  It takes hydration to be loud.  If you want Absopure to obtain more money just raise the ticket price one dollar.

Last week it was 60 and cloudy and this week it was 65 and sunny, you aren't a plant you can go 3.5 hours without water. Also there are plenty of FREE water stations throughout the stadium where they have cups of water for the taken or they have good ole fashion drinking fountains.

cause 9/11, that is when the water ban began iirc but we all know the real reason is $ and the AD saw the perfect excuse i also recall some humanitarians started selling water for like $1 right outside the stadium, which probably pissed off the vendors

Not a big deal but I bought a 25 oz water from a vendor guy walking by the bathroom for 5 bucks and then later went to the concession stand and it was 4.50. Are prices always 50 cents more when buying from a walking vendor guy?

Each concession stand needs to reduce the amount of itmes that they offer because those poor people just can't keep up. The lines are long because there are too many opitons for the volunteers to keep track of. Just my 2 cents. Other than that, there is no other place I'd rather be on gameday.

This was one of my biggest takeaways for improvement from today's game, those poor folks don't seem trained well enough and it shows as lines were long and slow moving, positive was the overall positive attitude folks had.

I have to say the Wave was pretty darn well executed by the crowd today, it was fun for all involved.

Still far too much RAWK, and it's still played too loudly.   When I see people saying that it wasn't that much, I'm wondering if they're just becoming desensitized to it.  I'm pretty sure we went through a full album's worth of RAWK over the course of this game.  The only real change I noticed was that the use of "Seven Nation Army" has been reduced.

Agree that really not much has changed except less Seven Nation Army and also no Eminem today.

Wanted to give a quick thank you to the event staff.  A guy puked in my section, including splashing a bit on the poor people in front of him and down a couple rows on the floor.  Extremely gross.  But the event staff were there fast and dealt with it quickly and efficiently.  So thanks to them for doing an extremely unpleasant task.

I migrated to the student section after the 1st quarter (I'm allowed to do this when my wife stays home -- I've had great experienes there over the years). Anyways, I counted about 15 people that slipped and fell going down the steps from the upper bowl in Section 31. Some bit it rather hard (It should probably be addressed).

Two complaints: 1.) Do we really need a shot of an unprofessional looking girl doing the National Anthem in sign language? It takes up a big part of the screen and just seems contrived, stupid, and unnecessary. What's next, Spanish, French, Swahili? 2.) Why did Ira Harris and his grandkids come on the field for the coin toss? They are donors, not players. They shouldn't be clogging up the coin toss, and those grandkids were acting rudely and immature. Get them off of the field.
