Andrew David is 3rd on the depth chart
While I'm not going to give away the full bit on the kicking situation that was posted on Scout, I will say that Andrew David is 3rd on the depth chart.
Kind of disappointing and worrying. Especially since the staff passed on Quinn Nordin.
That's all I really can post without giving away the full bit of information on who will be the kicker.

There are two things in life you never should trust- businessmen and kickers. Especially freshman ones.

"You know a ton of fourteen year old girls?"
"What belt are they?"

C'mon man. He's a true freshman
August 30th, 2015 at 12:56 PM ^
The thought was that he'd come in and start by many including myself.
Him booting a 50 or 60+ yarder in HS was encouraging. We have no idea what Allen, Seychel or Tice look like since they used Virtual Special Teams Man during the spring game.
It's concerning because it's an unknown, but my worries probably come from the fact that I'm still scarred from 2010.
2009 wasn't that bad of a year in kicking as I don't remember Olesnavage blowing any big kicks other than missing a PAT in the Purdue game that ultimately cost us. But he wasn't a deep threat either.

I don't know what they did with Gibbons in 2011, but to go from........to tying Garrett Rivas for the most game winning kicks in Michigan history in a year is nothing short of incredible.

They didn't really do anything except let him mature into the position. Nobody freaks out when a freshman corner or RB doesn't start, and both of those positions tend to attract athletes who can "figure it out" as they play. Yet for some reason, because a freshman couldn't outkick a bunch of guys a couple years older than him, it's reason for concern?
Yes, some guys come in an kick all four years; but many others don't and still turn out to be great players.

They stopped yelling at him in front of the team and blaming losses on him during meeting and/or in end of practice huddles.

You're taking everything I'm saying and turning into something that it's not. This is not a negative post or any shots at Andrew David.
Put aside whatever sour personal feelings you have towards me and look at the OP for what it is as if it was anyone but me that posted it.
It's simply a sliver of info from Scout. That's all.
I expected David to start. Oh well. Gibbons was redshirted in 2009 as well.

That's my issue with the post. Had you just said he was the third-string kicker, I wouldn't have much cared. But that little jab at the freshman, insinuating he's kind of a bust and that Michigan should have not "given up" on another highly-rated kicking recruit, was unnecessary. This isn't sour grapes or anything; hell, I actually don't get overly annoyed by most of what you post here compared to what appears to be a herd of auto-neggers that follow you around. But claiming I'm making this "something that it's not" feels an attempt to deflect away the negative responses you've gotten from a post that was tinged with unnecessary judgment.

Walk-on kickers win jobs all the time. I figured David would have a chance, but by no means was he assured to win the job. I've been hearing since the spring that Seychel was ahead of David, with Allen potentially beating him out, too.

Andrew is freshman and the staff will play the best kicker. However, I would be worried if our starter was similar to the kicker my high school had. On an extra point attempt, he hit the snapper in the ass.

Harbaugh followed Quinn Nordin on twitter this week. Could be indicative of the kicking talent we have this year.
August 30th, 2015 at 12:56 PM ^
The only kicker talk should be the game winner or, god forbid, loser. Kickers aren't football players except in those 2 situations. If your punter is your best player it has been my experience things are bad.
August 30th, 2015 at 1:06 PM ^
Wow. No, just no. Don't you remember how awful our kicking game was just a couple years ago? It was so bad that Rich Rod would routinely go for 4th down on what should be an easy kick for most kickers, just because our kicking was that bad. And the worst part is that we all understood that decision because yes, our kicking was that bad. Kickers are integral to the team. They provide easy points and excellent field position. They are not OT by any means.
August 30th, 2015 at 1:34 PM ^
Part of that was also that our defense was so bad that it seemed like we had to score a touchdown on nearly every drive.

So what is it that gives you confidence in the source, especially given the submarine? I don't subscribe & know nothing about their inside Michigan connections.

No worries.
We have Harbaugh.
August 30th, 2015 at 1:08 PM ^
What if David is 3rd not because he's bad, but because the other kickers are better? Depth Chart "all weight gain/loss is good" rule applies.
August 30th, 2015 at 1:08 PM ^
Maybe I'm missing something, but why is is a bad thing that a freshman kicker isn't immediately the best available option? Wouldn't you rather have guys that have kicked (or at least practiced) at a college level win the job?

Based upon?
(Just wondering if you have studied/watched him and like what you see, went to his high school, like his name, just like the underdog, etc.)

Why? Because he can't go for 3? (Still a great line)

I feellike you have posted about him before (or someone else did). A couple things:
1. He wouldn't be playing this year.
2. He could very well struggle the same as David appears to be struggling. Wait til he gets on campus.
3. Michigan could still pursue him.
4. Michigan can get someone else next year. Kickers getting courted by top programs usually jump.
5. See Brandon Gibbons.
So, who cares about Nordin?
August 30th, 2015 at 1:32 PM ^
Seychel has not been selected to start. As far as what I have heard you are correct WD. Andrew David is third on the depth chart. However, it is so close it could be David or Allen. So, le's wait until Thursday. The kickers have not shown any consistency, therefore this competition may run through Tuesday.

Just because Harbaugh may have someone as 3rd string on special teams does not mean he will not be playing offense and defense instead.

It's interesting to me to discuss a kicker in this manner - i.e. wondering if he'll pan out, questioning if another kicker recruit would've beent the wiser choice, etc. Kicker doesn't seem like a position that requires development, either in knowledge of game/scheme or physical growth and development (as opposed to Oline or WR). You're either good at kicking a stationary ball far and accuratley when asked, or you're not. There shouldnt be developmental or speculative kicker recruits.

Jay feely is another good example. He wasnt great at Michigan but developed into a strong nfl kicker.
