While none of us know the full circumstances about why Town wants to transfer, the whole thing kind of stinks to me. Requesting a transfer after only experiencing spring practice screams head case to me. While I know Coach Harbaugh likes to take a QB with each class, this kid doesn't sound like he has the testicular fortitude to fit the bill.

We got Steve Threet in the same manner. He went to Georgia Tech and then transferred almost immediately. He seemed like an okay guy, but he got caught up in a couple bad situations (pro-style guy who found himself playing for option coaches). Then he went to Arizona State, got knocked around a little bit, and retired early.

Town's not in the same situation (he's a pro-style guy in a pro-style offense), but you never know. Maybe the college life there didn't suit him. Maybe he and the coaches didn't mesh. These guys who enroll early are still basically high school seniors/college freshmen.

I heard it said that one reason Ty Isaac left SC was because there were too many crips and bloods on the roster and it wasn't a comfortable locker room (mother thought so, too).

Maybe same with Towns..?  The guy who said Isaac left for that reason just landed a radio show on Serius Radio for the fall season.

Yeah, I'm not saying anything that wasn't said specifically about things in SC ...at least then.

But I spend a lot of time in LA and have a lot of SC Alumni clients and that program has always had an element reflecting the area around campus.  Isaac coming from Joliet wasn't part of that SoCal element, is all..

Hell, I was invited to an SC 'Pro Day' when Carroll was still the HC ...those events were wide open access to the Trojans and they got in trouble.

Isaac left because he was buried on the depth chart behind a Penn State transfer from Connecticut (Silas Redd), a converted linebacker from the suburbs in Orange County (Tre Madden), a dude from Florida who ended up having a great career and being an NFL draft pick (Buck Allen), and a guy from Northern California in his own recruiting class (Justin Davis).

Town is leaving because he is behind a returning starter from Bakersfield (Cody Kessler), a 5-star QB from Washington (Browne), and a kid in his own class from the mean streets of San Clemente, CA (a beach town in south Orange County).

You are an uninformed dumbass spouting racist bullshit.

Less than the other three guys, and that was with Redd, Madden, and Davis missing significant time due to injury.  And at least 3/4 of those carries came in garbage time in blowout wins.

In fairness though, that is a very loaded depth chart.  Last year Allen put up 1,489 yards and Davis added antoher 595 behind a line with three freshmen much of the year, while Redd had averaged over 1,000 yards the two seasons prior to Isaac's arrival.

Ty wasn't buried on the depth chart at all and got time as a true Freshman.  And San Clemente ain't exactly Mater Dei or Rancho Santa Margarita.

I'm just saying what a coach said about the transfer when asked at an Alumni Event in NYC.

The next RB in after him was a 5'7" walk-on who speaks fluent Japanese.  And three of the guys ahead of him on that list missed roughly half the season each (Redd missed 8 games, Davis missed 7, and Madden missed three and had to leave three others).  30 of those 40 carries he had came late in blowout wins over BC, Cal, Colorado, and Fresno State.

Justice Hayes got more carries last year at Michigan than Isaac did at USC.  And he just transferred too, because he was buried on the depth chart.

You don't know what you are talking about.

No one said that all of them were "all about the street life."  Not everyone who is gamg affiliated is affiliated at the same level.  Sometimes it's just the neighborhood where you grew up or you have brother or cousins in one particular gang.  Based on where SC gets a lot of their players, that's not far fetched.

Let's say player X isn't really in a gang, but half of his best friends from his (relatively nearby) high school are/were.  You don't think that could lead to some trouble?

Look at where SC actually gets their players.  There are maybe 5 guys on the roster who aren't either from a private school, out of state/area, or places like Orange County or Corona or Rancho Cucamonga.

Michigan gets as many if not more kids from places like Cass Tech and Glenville, but no one would suggest there is some sort of gangster mentality poisoning the locker room here.

There have been interviews with gang members on TV talking about how military training has increased the effectiveness of tactics used in gang warfare. If you don't believe it, you've got your head either in the sand or up your ass. There are gang members in the military and when they get out, they go back and kill even more rivals. I used to think military service would straighten them out. Apparently not all of them.

This discussion has nothing to do with football, sports or UM and belongs in racist subsections of reddit. I have no doubt that there are gang bangers in the military--along with klan and neo-nazi types, and people who believe the apocalypse is a-coming and will begin in the Middle East. Military service doesn't rehabilitate them either. But what does that have to do with Michigan football? I'm quite certain there are many other places available to rant about gang bangers in the military and how crack babies are coming to take over America and why don't we build a fence to keep all those rapists and drug dealers from invading us from south of the border and..whatever else passes for discourse in the dark corners of the net.

Its worth noting that Daelin Hayes, who is the number one player in Michigan, is currently committed to USC, but he is really close to Ricky Town. Ricky Town's dad was Daelin's sponsor during his USC visit, so this may shake things up in Daelin's recruitment as well.

I'm always skeptical of guys who fall down recruiting rankings as time goes (Morris, RJS, LTT) and optimistic about those who climb recruiting rankings as time goes on (Bolden, Todd Gurley, Laquon Treadwell).... Town started out as a potential top recruit in the nation and steadily fell.

I definitely agree with your overall point, but Ricky Town didn't drop that far.  He was never the #1 guy, and he finished the season ranked composite #6 in a loaded QB class (and 247 kept him at #3).  He was the #79 player overall in the country.  It's not like he dropped like a rock.

Town is a huge (6 ft 5, 215 lbs) and talented kid with a Howitzer arm, but I'd expect him to consider some of the schools that offered him previously:

http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/recruiting/player-Ricky-Town-140268#college_choices

Michigan did not offer previously.

Stanford did.

This change is really late. The field of competition at Michigan and the offering schools would  probably not be any easier than USC.  Trojans have eight QBs. With Cody Kessler, Max Browne, Jalen Greene and Connor Sullivan now topping the list.  Word is competing for 3rd place with Greene.   Kessler is an experience RS Sr. anyway, so I'm not sure anyone understands Town's impatience.  He'd probably be a top candidate for the job next yr vs. Brown and Greene.

Good luck to kid. He is a hell of a talent who would probably start at other programs.

He hasn't produced enough yield on the field.  His passes are like molasses.  His releases are like my niece's.  His attitude belongs at another latitude.  My team has a need for a QB with more speed.
