OSU Trademarks the name "Urban Meyer"
Some more commercialization in the college sport:

It's all about the money........
Go Blue
I wonder if he ever gets fired if he'll have to change his name.
We need to hurry and trademark Rural Meyer just in case.
We need a lawyer to weigh in on this. This seems unconstitutional.
Still seems like down the road he could sue them on the basis of coercion or something if things fall apart (as has happened with every OSU coach in the last century or so).
Meyer had to have signed a contract with OSU and would be bound by what he and the school agreed to. There are criteria that must be met when registering a surname. Here is a good discussion of the topic:

It is fine, so long as there is a commercial purpose and consent from the natural person having the name. Examples include:
Martha Stewart (Martha Stewart Living)
George Foreman (George Foreman Lean Mean Grilling Machine)
Cindy Crawford (Cindy Crawford Home)
Etc.
AFAIK those examples you cited were trademarked by the individual, not their employer. This seems totally different.
Everyone thinks he came up with said grill, even me at one time. There was an SI article on him in the past few months. This company came to him and asked him to be a spokesperson for said grill and he obviously consented to putting his name on it and everything. It worked out quite well for him.
But it wasn't a case of him personally trademarking his name.
They must be going ahead with branding a line of feminine hygene products.!
I'm trying to find the federal registration. I bet it's just for T-Shirts, etc.

Check the alternate spelling. Maybe OSU is trying to trademark all Meijer stores in urban settings?

Reg. No. 4770248
Class: IC 025. US 022 039. G & S: Clothing items for men, women, and children, namely, hats, caps, shirts, and T-shirts.
Owner: (REGISTRANT) The Ohio State University state university OHIO 190 North Oval Mall Columbus OHIO 43210
Other: The name(s), portrait(s), and/or signature(s) shown in the mark identifies "URBAN MEYER", whose consent(s) to register is made of record.
I bet if he leaves OSU, Urban will have the tradmark assigned to wherever he goes. I haven't filed a trademark for a person's name before, so I'm unsure how the "consent" role plays here.

Should have also trademarked urban liar.
Or urban myth. But liar sounds better.
Upvote, I like urban myth. Also urban cryer - for the next time he has his "health issues"
will make Urbz sick again and he will retire!
so you are going with "urban retire"
So if my name also happened to be Urban Meyer, I can't make a tshirt with my name on it? I feel like someone should change their name and do that just to be able to challenge this.
Anyone want to trademark John Smith? I bet you could make a lot of money.
could spray paint the word Urban Meyer on a t-shirt and where it in the shoe on gameday. This really doesn't do anything, and I am confused as to why OSU would go through the trouble of doing this.
ever you wanted too.
really. Why do you say?
Just don't trademark John L Smith, as that name tends to lose a lot of money.
so so much.

Why the name-calling? What did you expect them to do?
Douche Bag was already taken.
You know, the funny thing is that it is something that is becoming much more common because it really does seem to be about finding another source of merchandising income. I think that Kansas State has done this with Bill Snyder and Steve Sarkisian had a rather detailed agreement when he was at Washington, even down to the use of his voice - it would be interesting to see if USC does the same thing. Dabo Swinney - if you can believe this - even has some restrictions on the use of his name per a filing Clemson made. I am sure there plenty of other notable examples.
to trademark "Jim Harbaugh."
can you be before you are actually considered an Honorary member?
Ufer took that one years ago.
This is probably just to set up a low grade knock off tubed meat concern to go after illiterate Ohians who meant to buy Oscar Meyer.
meant " Recruit the largest numbers of players that will eventually be arrested"
Sometimes sports is absurd.
Is Rural Meyer stil available? Industrial Meyer? Residential Meyer? Cut Meyer? Fuckstick Meyer?
If he was from Grand Rapids, he would probably spell it urban meijer.
I don't think this will stop MGOSTORE from coming up with t-shirts down the road ...
"Herb N. Meijer"
anyone..?
the stores spokesperson, when it becomes legal to sell weed at supermarkets.
