OT: Talking Cars Tuesday - Cars you hate

Submitted by JeepinBen on

Hey, it's actually tuesday!

Per a great suggestion from "A Different Jason" this week let's get the hate out there. What car (s) do you absolutely HATE? Maybe you bought the wrong vehicle, maybe that rental you had for a week was the worst thing ever, maybe that car just has a stupid look on its stupid car face.

Let's hear the hate. The less rational the better.

I hate all SUVs.  Mostly because I associate them with pretentious people who don't even know what a dirt road looks like.  I'm fairly certain 99.9999999% of SUVs are never used for what they are meant.

Let's add 2-wheel drive pick-up trucks while we're at it.

Also, I hate the Dodge Viper.  I had experience one summer in an engine shop that works on the blocks for the Viper.  They are a junk design.

You said you wanted irrational.

Not sure if serious.

If serious......lol.  You want me to put a grocery strap on a scooter for ya?  Does that now mean that a scooter is meant for hauling groceries?  I'm sure you use that extra ground clearance in the SUV to make it to the grocery store every week.  Also, when you type "FWD" does that stand for "Four Wheel Drive"?  In industry that stands for "Front Wheel Drive".

If not serious......ok.

So, I'm a little confused here, but you seem to have some butthurt going on... While I appreciate your scooter offer, I'll stick with the Benz.

Also, I realize that FWD means front wheel drive, as I in fact do work in the auto industry, but thanks... I was making fun of myself in response to the above post, now I've spent too much time explaining the joke.

You know how one wrongheaded comment destroys the whole of one's point(s)?  A two wheel drive truck is called a work truck.  It's built for people who actually need to haul things as part of their jobs/businesses.  Since the truck is regularly weighed down with 500-1000 lbs of sod or tools or a diesel transfer tank they really don't need 4wd to gain traction on slippery pavement.  They cost 30% less and get 10 or 20% better mileage than their 4wd counterparts and since they are for work the bottom line is important.

In general, I just don't like Ford cars and will never buy them.  To be honest, I don't even really remember why or where my disdain for them came from.

From personal experience, I dislike anything with a CVT in it.  Had a Dodge Caliber for a little bit a few years back, and there's something that feels not right about that weird transmission.  I'm sure some cars do a much better job with CVT, but I'm turned off to it for life.

I had the same hatred for CVTs until I drove the new WRX. My buddy got one, I made fun of him for not getting the stick shift, he insisted I try it, and it really impressed me. It's not as crisp as a dual clutch but it emulates human shifting pretty well- it doesn't drone on and on at the same RPM like the other CVTs I've tried (Honda CRV / Accord etc.) They're also good for people who don't care about performance and just want to maximise miles per gallon.

There's something very unsettling about not hearing or feeling gears shift to me.  I know some CVTs can superficially make that happen, but still, it's gonna to take one heck of an experience like you said for me to ever consider that transmission in the future.

Cars that are straight up ugly? Smart cars. I get that they're all energy efficient and everything but the car is tiny and there is absolutely no room in that thing for anything besides yourself. It defeats the purpose of a car.

In normal cars, I would say either the Scion xB or the Kia Soul. They're pretty much boxes on wheels.

Any 1974 model car, after the cumulative effects of the bumper laws + forced down-sizing by the '73 oil embargo.

I get what the auto manufacturers had to do, but the execution was pathetic.

I put these pictures in one of the other threads about uniforms to illustrate that not everything newer is better.  It especially applies here.

In a few short years. you went from this:

To this:

I was a kid at the time, and every fall I was very excited to see what the new cars were going to look like, especially the cool cars like Mustangs, Camaros, and Vettes.

Needless to say, I was crushed that year.

It wasn't just the appearance, the performance sucked, too. It took a few years for the engineering to catch up with the imposed emission standards.

And speaking of ugly cars, a buddy of mine bought a used bright yellow AMC Pacer because it was cheap.  It was cheap because it was ugly as hell, with the bulbous fishbowl rear end.  To make matters worse, his father was convinced all the flexible tubes on and near the carbureter were unneccesary and just there because the government was screwing people over with the new emission standards, so he yanked all the tubes off and threw them away.  My buddy had a hell of a time ever getting that thing running again.

I do think Camaro/Firebird survived the transition better than most.

My favorite was the '77 Trans AM:

A kid in my high school got one that looked like the picture above as a Senior, and he went from being an ignored nerd in the hallways to one of the "cool" kids with a hot girlfriend overnight.

I was insanely jealous.  Bastard.

My worst was a '82 Buick Century that was a hand-me-down car at one point.  I would jump on the highway on my way to hockey practice and the thing would do one of two things: either completely die on the way down the ramp, and I would have to roll into the rest area that was thankfully right there, or would be up to all of 45 mph by the time I hit the actual higway.  The things just didnt run.

And I had a '81 Pontiac T-1000.  It was white.  It was an egg.

Nissan Cube is one of the ugliest cars on the road. I had a terrible date with a guy who turned out to be a Sparty, and finding out he drives a Cube was just the icing on the cake.

I once owned a Jeep Wrangler and it got stuck in the mud and I had to have it towed out. Self-explanatory hate. Plus, everytime I got off the highway, I felt like I was going to roll.

I owned 2 Jeep Wranglers. See the Avatar, that was a good stuck-in-the-mud. I can't speak to the latest ones, but my '98 was a much better 2nd car than a primary car. If you're using the Jeep as a regular car, you're going to have a bad time. If you're using it as a toy, it's perfect.

VW Beetle. I drove my ex's black and fluorescent yellow Beetle for like a year until I got my car from Ohio. It even had those obnoxious "eyelash" covers on the headlights. On top of that, I'm 6'2 and it isn't designed for me like Buicks are for Shaq.

I love what BMW used to be. I hate what it is now.

They used to be 300,000 mile cars. You didn't own one unless you made a ton of money or knew how to do your own work. The maintenance schedule was insane, but they were fine machines if taken care of properly.

Now they're throwaway cars. The maintenance schedule has been scaled back to save the company money and most people dump them after the 4 year program is over.

are great cars to lease. Turn them back in after 3 years. The 5 series had become very "soft" and not fun to drive; supposedly the next update 2017 will bring it back toward more sporty/traditional BMW.

My worst car isn't one I have ever driven, but more the drivers I encounter every day during rush hour.  If you own a BMW and are a Michigan fan I apologize, but spending an hour in the car each way for multiple years I have found that BMW drivers are the rudest on the road.

Any beige-colored Toyota - the most reasonable color of the most reasonable car driven by the most reasonable people who drive in the most reasonable fashion (ie. slow as fuck). I do whatever I can to avoid getting behind one.
