OT: Do you believe in UFOs?
Maybe the better question - do you beleive in otherworld beings? Aliens? Are we being spied on? Are some "people" reptilian? Are you reptilian?
My stance? I don't really know, but there is too much evidence for it to be a flat out "no."
Note: This is meant to be a slow July, no football, WAY OT, fun discussion. So Neg me, Pos me, post a GIF, whatever.
Friday Friendly Discusion... GO.

Then why am I wearing this tinfoil hat? Well, it's Friday isn't it?

I feel like Brian put you up to this to cull the readership herd a bit.
Is there life out there? Almost certainly there is.
Do we stand a chance of finding it in the incomprehensible vastness that is our universe? Almost certainly we don't.
all you have to do is a few hours of research and observe the in-person, direct testimony of hundreds of witnesses that are highly educated, well achieved, military and governmental individuals of high status. Astronauts, four star Generals, ministers of Defense, missile silo operators, heads of states, Navy personnel, Air Force personnel, Marines, Boeing, CIA, police, radar operators, NASA's own video feeds, Northrup-Grumman, past Presidents, veteran pilots, the Vatican, Raytheon, countless declassified documents, the list is simply endless. We put people on death row with far less evidence. I believe within my children's life times, they will see disclosure finally take place.
So aliens only visit the US?
/s
Interesting. It seems like they also only visit US government facilities.
One of the most documented sightings of a UFO was witnessed over the city of Phoenix by more than 10,000 people. You can Google it, It was national news for about 2 days and then it was squashed. There is a pretty good documentary about it on netfix, Phoenix Lights.
There's an Air Force range near Phoenix. All of these so called sightings are military aircraft.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phoenix_Lights#Explanations
Find me one "sighting" that isn't near a US military base.
an Unidentified Flying Object, so yes, I believe in UFOs.
Anytime you look up in the sky and think
"WTF is that?", you've got a UFO
The whole city and surrounding suburbs saw it. It sat above the cities that entire time just hovering. The ex governor or mayor there came out and stated the same as everyone else.
that with a chupacabra story this week and now a discussion about UFOs, that we have finally reached the end of the off season. 47 days...
As if there is any chance Harbaugh is 100% Earthling.
I think he's a Timelord. He's humorous, quirky and all over the place all the time...
With the size of the universe, isn't there statistically a decent chance that there are two earth-like planets in one sun-like solar system? I mean, there could be millions of solar systems like this. And one of em could have space ships at the same time.

Wait, no! It's a cookbook!
It was pretty heavily posted in!

If you believe in God and creation, why would he create all of these planets and only put life on one? If you don't believe in creation, how likely is it that with that many habitable planets that life only formed on one? I definitely believe there is other intellignt life out there, but I don't think it's anything we'll find during my lifetime.
We are the middle children of history. Born too late to explore the earth and born to soon to explore the universe. Atleast we can explore the internet.

And yes, we are being spyed on. Big brother is staring at you right now through your webcam.
/puts tinfoil hat on
The idea that someone is spying on me makes me seem much more interesting than I actually am.
Yes, there is some intelligent life forms out there, but no I don't think they have visited Earth. On the subject of myths, urban legends, etc, I really have a hard time believing in the Loch Ness Monster, Bigfoot, and other urban legends. Today, nearly everyone has a device in their pocket to take photo and video, and we still only have pictures of these creatures from 30 years ago.
I want to believe. Because I'm bored and that would be very exciting.
But, no, I don't think so.
I find it likely that life or pre-life coalitions of compounds are common.
I find it likely that intelligent life is incredibly rare.
Try this: http://www.activemind.com/Mysterious/topics/seti/drake_equation.html
What values do you use and what result do you get?
N = N* fp ne fl fi fc fL
8.25 = 100 billion * .5 * .33 * .005 * .01 * 1 * 1/100,000
I get 8.25 communicating civilizations active in the galaxy at any one time. However, I think n-sube (the number of planets that can support life per star) should be MUCH lower, so I'd actually get less than 1.
I guess we don't exist.
That said, I personally think its extremely unlikely that this planet is unique in the galaxy (let alone the universe).

The only thing bigger than the universe is the margin of error for the Drake equation.
I was about to post this equation but you beat me to it. I took an Astronomy class my last semester and the professor talked about this in the last week and his comment was that this equation is sort of arbitrary because the last 4 constants are pretty much based on how the user "feels" about the topic. That being said, I agree that based on the evidence of planets with liquid water, which is one of the big items for life based on what we know, it stands to reason that we are not alone in the universe but its unlikely that we've been visited.
Its entirely arbitrary.
Dr. Drake was very clear in stating that this equation was the means for starting a discussion and not intended for sceintific use.
I agree with you and Pinky 100 percent.
BUT, this is a fascinating conversation starter.
If life does begin, how often does it become intelligent life? Why do you think so? Etc..
Just fascinating stuff.
What if there is not?
Seems odd that there would be one planet in a huge galaxy where intellegent life exists.
I've been abducted twice. It wasn't that bad.
(Walks over to the corner of a dark room. Assumes fetal postion. Sucks thumb. Cries softly)
before the aliens got their paws on you?
No. Always a Koala which is a Marsupial and not a bear. They took me to analyze my bifurcated penis.
