OT: Kirk Gibson Has Parkinson's
FSD and media reporting. Very tough news
In a statement released, Gibson says:
"I have faced many different obstacles in my life, and have always maintained a strong belief that no matter the circumstances, I could overcome those obstacles. While this diagnosis poses a new kind of challenge for me, I intend to stay true to my beliefs. With the support of my family and friends, I will meet this challenge with the same determination and unwavering intensity that I have displayed in all of my endeavors in life. I look forward to being back at the ballpark as soon as possible."

ill be that guy, anyone think football had something to do with it?

I didn't know who Kirk Gibson was so I had to look it up. According to wikipedia he played baseball.

He also played wide receiver at Michigan State.
... he was an All American WR there ... sad news
Gibby was a great wide receiver at MSU. My undergrad years were spent as a Sparty and I remember being sad he decided to play baseball rather than football.
You didn't know who Kirk Gibson was, really? Are you young?
There's this for Tiger fans: And this for pretty much anyone who loves sports or Dodger fans:Why do all those baseball players look so skinny?
I'm amazed they had the audio of the Padres' conversation at the mound. I didn't think they did that kind of thing back then.
I was living in San Diego at the time, but wasn't able to attend any of the games. Best Tiger season ever.
be under 36 or so? Gibby played for the 84 world series champion Tigs. Yes he was a Sparty and was projected as 1st-2nd round pick at WR but opted to play MLB as you read on wiki.
I'm under 30 and I don't watch baseball. I've never seen a single full inning of baseball on TV.
It's odd that you chose Gary Moeller to quote, given your age
It is a pretty recent quote. I think he said it because of all those different "factions" who were against Rich Rod.

If not knowing someone makes me a douche bag, then I guess I;m a douche bag.
No, not having anything caring or sympathetic to say makes you a douche bag.
I hear this guy is looking for rock to live under if you're interested in selling yours.

Terrible. That's one of those diseases I never want to get. Not that any terminal illness is good, but that one is particularly bad.
April 28th, 2015 at 12:29 PM ^
My late Father-in-Law passed away from the disease last year and the last five years of his life were increadibly debilitating. At the end he was completely frozen and unable to move his arms, legs or speak at all. It was heartbreaking watching my wife trying desparately to communicate with him - knowing his mind was still functioning but he was unable to talk to her or move his arms to hold her.

that something was wrong in November, 2012 because of the way he was walking. They actually thought he might have parkingsons or Lou Gehrigs disease then.
Very sad news.

That was the rumor. I don't think it's ever been confirmed though.

This is very tough news, both as a lifelong Detroit sports fan who still has the framed "G-r-r-reat" page from 1984 in his home office and enjoyed watching Gibson and those teams and as someone who is watching his father slowly succumb to this affliction and has been for a few years now.
On many levels, very sad news indeed.
Very sad news.
I will always remeber him as a Tiger, especially from 1984.
This is National Parkinsons awareness month. Sports trauma is not a cause for Parkinson's. Football can do terrible things to a body, but this is not one of them.
Loved what Gibby brought to the game.
pissed that he has to work more games with Rod Allen if Gibby cannot be in the booth. Here is hoping that Gibby will be in the booth. He is the only Sparty that I can ever root for. Loved him and those '84 Tigers.

I would only argue that it might be the most dramatic since Bobby Thompson's homer to win the Giants the pennant back in the 50's.
Many people don't remember that was his only at bat in the series. It was only one game but was probably as big a reason the Dodgers won that year as anything else. Completely knocked the A's off the tracks.
Hoping the best for Gibby but this is a tough one.
When Kirk limped out of the dugout, I said to my wife, "Wow, this is like something out of 'The Natural'", and then life imitated art.
Greatest non-Michigan football sports memory of my life. My kids still talk about the yell I let out. ( Dodger fan back then. )
So sorry to hear about this; best wishes to Mr. Gibson and his family.
Was Gibby.
And did he ever step it up when things were on the line. His two World Series performances, one for the Tigers and the other for the Dodgers.......were simply fabulous.
He is an obvioous fighter, but this is a tough blow to a proud guy.
Terrible news about Gibby. Fond memories of 1984 but he was a better football player than baseball player. I still am sick about seeing him running all over Michigan Stadium catching passes from Eddie Smith when the Spartans won in 1978.
my brother played ball against him in college. we were both at that 84 series game 5. with his sucess managing too, what a winner and a gifted athlete.
i know he lived 'hard' in his younger days. i am curious if there is a correlation b/w that, football, and then the early onset of parkinson's.
God bless him.
