NCAA Hockey National Title Game / NHL Open Thread
Providence vs. (3) Boston U
Providence has been in a shell most of the game but just got the games 1st goal. 1-0 Providence with 10:35 to go in the 1st.
Miscellaneous NHL action too. I know Pittsburgh and Boston are fighting for a playoff spot, not sure what else is happening tonight.
Hot team that shouldn't be there always seems to win these things over the better team.
However, BU is getting the majority of the possession and chances. Long way to go for Providence. They certainly do have the goalie (#9) and D (#4) to play with a lead though
BU just scored 2 goals in less than 10 seconds
2-1 BU
Providence in trouble all of a sudden
BU scored and they literally scored 5 seconds later. 2-1 BU.
Ticker just said 4 seconds. I think it said that was a record (hard to see how you could do it any faster than BU just did)

IIRC the NHL record from center ice is just a fraction under four, so I think you're right. It might not be physically possible to get that number down much assuming there's a goalie in net.

NHL is 4 seconds.
According to Wikipedia, oddly enough, the quickest two goals to start a game (27 seconds) were scored by Michigan alum Mike Knuble. How about that.
I couldn't decide who I'd be more amused with missing the playoffs, Pittsburgh or Boston, but I do kinda lean towards Boston and am glad it will be them. <Nelson laugh>
Now my concern is do I want the Wings to hold on. I don't think they'll get by either TB or Montreal. I'm not sure which first-round loss will be more of a wake-up call. I guess TB. They'll blame a loss to Montreal on otherworldly goaltending from Price, the kind of loss which is hardly a new thing for the Wings.
EDIT: Andersson with the empty-netter as I'm typing!

Welp. Let's go Terriers, I guess. Because, comeon, you can't win a national championship on that.

Oh my God that just happened.

For those not watching, Providence flipped one up from the neutral zone and BU's goalie caught it but it slipped out of his blocker and went through his legs.
That just tied the national championship game 3-3.

Who is doing play-by-play? He is an extremely excitable man.
Also can Barry Melrose please replace Doc Emerick on NBC?

Sportscenter anchor John Buccigross.
He's no Gary Thorne, but I like him.

NCAA Championship game prediction: Providence 4-3 in OT.

No one said it was, but OK.

Like nobody here has EVER bragged a little bit about a prediction being correct...

Another confirmation of the stupidity of single elimination in a sport with as much randomness as hockey, but my God what a hockey game.
Also, I could not care less about BU but you aren't human if you don't feel terrible for their goalie.
April 11th, 2015 at 10:23 PM ^
Catch the puck cleanly, like you do 999 times out of 1000, and that's the game. That's hockey.
April 11th, 2015 at 10:26 PM ^
He did! He just failed at dropping it so someone could play it. More Patrick Roy than Dan Cloutier to borrow famous playoff miscues against the Wings.

Need a gif of that weeping girl with a face as red as her BU sweater. Notre Dame-esque.

Interesting how many programs have won their first national title lately...Duluth in 2011(blech), Yale in 2013, Union last year, and now Providence. Ferris State and Quinnipiac also played in the title game.
The B1G seemed like a good idea at the time...but it seems like a lot of smaller schools are better than ever.

Yale 2013. BC 2012 is actually the only high profile champion in the last several years.

Yep. When you think back to the level of competition in the 90s, the good teams were good, but there wasn't really a middle ground between good and positively terrible when so many top players weren't even thinking about college. Parity is good.
That being said, those 1990s Maine teams with Paul Kariya and company... I'm still sort of pissed about that loss in the 1995 Frozen Four.
